The transformation of the historic commercial area centered on Bishop Avenue and Seventh Street has been nearly 30 years in the making. By the 1920s Martin Weiss had built most of the buildings on Bishop Avenue you see today. The area continued to grow and expand through the 1950s; however, in the 1960s the area began to decline as the commercial area was shunned in favor of newly built shopping centers. By the 1980s there were few businesses left and the majority of the buildings were boarded up. Since then an incredible transformation has taken place in the area now known as the Bishop Arts District. Preservation Dallas honors that transformation and all that have made the area such a success and thriving destination for the City of Dallas. Here’s the story of how that happened.
