At the age of sixteen, Lorde blessed us with her debut EP, The Love Club. That was 2012, and since then, she’s released her debut album, Pure HeroinLorde’s music is dance-inducing, a little dark, and definitely fresh. I’ve never seen her live, but judging by the live recordings I’ve watched repeatedly on YouTube, she puts on a pretty great show. If you’re one of the lucky people who snatched up tickets to tonight’s sold out show at Gilley’s South Side Ballroom, I deeply envy you. I would ask you to post as many photos, videos, and updates to Twitter and Instagram as possible during the performance, but the jealousy may overwhelm me, and I wouldn’t want you to miss out on the magic on stage. Check in to Gilley’s on Facebook, let all your friends post their jealous comments, take one photo to capture the memory, and then just put your phone away and take it all in.

The Pixies @ Gilley’s South Side Ballroom

Last Friday, Pixies performed at Gilley’s South Side Ballroom. If you  missed it like I did, check out this playlist of the full Pixies set list from Friday (with the exception of Silver Snail, which is not on Spotify but was played between Nimrod’s Son and Ed Is Dead). I’m sad to have missed the show, but at least this playlist includes co-founder Kim Deal, who left the band in June of last year. “No Kim, No Deal” is a new motto for die-hard fans of the band’s former bassist and backing vocalist. On the bright side, she’s still the sole continual member of The Breeders, formed in 1990, whose song Off You was just featured in Spike Jonze’s spectacular Oscar-winning movie Her.  I’m hoping The Breeders come to South Dallas soon!

CVRCHES Brings Synthopop to Gilley’s South Side Ballroom, Saturday, Nov. 23rd. BASECAMP is Opening Act!

Posted by    |    November 21st, 2013 at 10:00 am

c5db3e3f1914182f5d4a5b5741b5a4d3One of this year’s biggest buzz bands will be lighting up the South Side Ballroom stage this Saturday!  CHVRCHES (pronounced “churches”), is a Scottish synthopop trio whose unique electronic sound has been described as “a hurricane of kinetic pop energy”.  The band’s first studio album, The Bones of What You Believe, debuted in September and was immediately heralded by many as one of 2013’s best albums. The band won Best Developing Non-U.S. Act at SXSW earlier this year and made their U.S. TV debut in July on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and performed two songs from their album last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Mother We Share and Lies, their soon to be released new single.  Not only does CVRCHES master the bass-heavy electronic dance music, but infuses strong, meaningful lyrics, sung hypnotically by lead vocalist, Lauren Mayberry.  CVRCHES’ light show is equally enticing described as “pure eye candy.  A swirling, pulsating mix of colors that is perfectly in time with the constantly shifting tempos.”

As if CVRCHES isn’t enough, BASECAMP is the opening act!  This Nashville-based trio’s recently released EP, Emmanuel, is reaping critical acclaim for its unique artistry of marrying haunting R&B vocals with meaningful lyrics and electronic stage production.  With this as BASECAMP’s Dallas debut, be one of the first to see what many are saying is the next groundbreaking style in music!

Untapped Festival: Indie Music and Beer at Gilley’s

Posted by    |    September 5th, 2013 at 7:10 pm

When it comes to having a good time beer and music is one of, if not the, best combinations to make that happen. If you agree with this statement then get yourself down to Gilley’s  tomorrow for the annual Untapped Festival. See, the organizers of Untapped Festival saw that at both music and beer festivals there was always an imbalance, beer festivals rarely had good music and music festivals rarely had good beer. So they decided to give you both by bringing you some of the best up and coming artists both in music and in craft beer. At Untapped Festival  you’ll get to enjoy  a selection of over 200 different kinds of beer from 60 different breweries and  hear music from 4 indie music acts from around the country. Artisans and food trucks will also be there hanging out with the brewers and musicians creating what the organizers like to call “vibrant village activity.”

August & J at the Jack Daniels Saloon

Posted by    |    July 29th, 2013 at 6:37 pm

AJ2In support of their debut full length album entitled 40, August & J will be stopping by the Jack Daniel’s Saloon for a live performance this Saturday, August 3rd.  The Denton based duo is coming off a ten-year break from working with one another, a re-initiation prompted by J’s desire to write songs again. While writing and playing his new material J kept hearing August’s voice singing the lyrics. So J called August up one day to see if he wanted to start making music together again and soon after that they started writing and recording songs.

The resulting album combines both catchy melodies that get stuck in your head with powerful guitar riffs and a touch of southern sensibility. August & J’s video for their newest single “The Moon” has already reached 1,500,000 views on You Tube and is now playing on MTV, VH1 and CMT.

Full Circle Tavern – South Side’s New Hot (Sandwich) Spot

Posted by    |    May 10th, 2013 at 10:51 pm

After finally snagging a table to enjoy our free barbeque sandwiches and beer at last night’s opening of Full Circle Tavern, my friend and I both began to wonder, “Why aren’t there more restaurants over here?”

South Side’s new cool place to grab a beer or a sandwich (but like craft beer and gourmet sandwiches) is located in between the equally cool NYLO hotel and Gilley’s. Their aptly named grand opening, “Rollin’ with the Homies,” was jam packed with the friendly hipsters that tend to frequent the area along with Full Circle Tavern gals Jennifer Bonner and Lara Whittington. It was casual, music-filled, and completely welcoming.

Dale Earnhardt jr. jr. at the Loft 5.10.13

Posted by    |    May 9th, 2013 at 8:38 pm

Dale-Earnhardt-Jr-JrThis Friday, Dallas welcomes the Detroit indie duo Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. to the Loft at Gilley’s Dallas, and let’s give them a warm Texas welcome  shall we? They deserve it for making some fun tracks that will fit perfectly with the summer time fun that’s on its way. Their new track If you didn’t see me (You weren’t on the dance floor) should definitely be on one if not all your your summer playlists this year. It’s a fun, breezy tune with a good beat and a little bit of sass that elicits images of nights spent workin’ up a sweat under rainbow lights.

The rest of the songs on their new EP, entitled Patterns, follow a similar sound with a couple that are a little slower and emotional but none that come off as too heavy for a warm nights spent dancing with friends

Posted by    |    November 12th, 2012 at 4:24 pm

If the Dallas Observer Music Awards and Art Con 8 weren’t enough to quench your local artist thirst, put this on your calendar. On Saturday, November 17, one of Dallas’ hottest neighborhoods will host the 10th Annual Cedars Open Studios Tour. From 12 to 6 p.m., over 40 world-class and up-and-coming artists will open their doors to the public, allowing visitors to experience a creative, evolving neighborhood rich in art, history, food and entertainment.

The Cedars is home to artist like Abi Ferrin, Dallas Designing Dreams, La Mode Dallas, Sam Fuller, Elizabeth Anyaa, and more. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet local artists, see their studios and purchase their art in the neighborhood that has been a haven for artist and other creatives for over 20 years and that has recently been dubbed “one of the hot new spots to live in Dallas” by the Observer.

Sponsored by South Side on Lamar, Gilley’s, Palladium, the new NYLO Hotel and more, Cedars Open Studios will transform the neighborhood into a pedestrian walkway of art, music, food, business and open space. Park anywhere in the Cedars this Saturday or book a ride there on Uber.
