Texas-Iowa State football game moved to Thursday night

Posted by    |    March 7th, 2013 at 12:28 pm

The Texas-Iowa State game will be broadcast nationally, thanks to the Big 12 moving it to Thursday Oct. 3.

The game will be played in primetime and will either be broadcast by ESPN or the new All-Sports Fox Cable Channel, which will debut this summer. The move also means that Texas gets a couple of extra days to prepare for the OU game in Dallas on Oct. 12. Two other Big 12 games have been moved to Thursday nights: Texas Tech at. TCU on Sept. 12 and Baylor at. OU on Nov. 7.

As expected, the Texas Longhorns couldn’t sustain the momentum of an epic comeback win against Oklahoma. In Stillwater, Texas played the Oklahoma St. Cowboys pretty well, but the better team won.

Analzying the game through a macro lens, the Cowboys provide an interesting case study in mapping out Texas’ future. Last year, Oklahoma St. finished the season a disappointing 15-18 (7-11 in the Big 12), then lost leading scorer Keiton Page (17.1 PPG) to graduation. Yet somehow, the Cowboys have already increased their win total by 7, currently sitting at a rosy 22-6.

I told you this game would be worth a watch, didn’t I?

Too bad I didn’t listen to my own advice. I admit: I was a bad fan. I came home at about the 10:00 mark. Walking in, I read about the nightmare on Twitter and decided against firing up the DVR/ESPN2 to catch the remaining horror.

Luckily, I got a text from a friend in time to tune into the final minute and overtime. So yeah, I missed the comeback (to be watched tonight), but caught the Myck Kabongo circus shot and the J’Onions! closeout in OT.

Ball don’t lie: I got chills at the end.

I like Myck.

Texas Longhorns 89, Iowa St. Cyclones 86: Post-Mortem

Boy, Myck Kabongo: aren’t you a sight for sore eyes? Kabongo’s final statline–13 points, 7 assists, and 4 rebounds–was but a small indicator of the impact he had on the Texas Longhorns. Color guy Reid Gettys noticed it early on: Kabongo can penetrate into the lane at will, leveraging the defense into mismatches and open shooters.

Even if the Longhorns had lost to the Iowa St. Cyclones (and I’m sure glad they didn’t), I still might have called it Texas’ best game to date, with the UNC win and KU loss close contenders. Certainly it was one of the most enjoyable.
