The Houston Cougars entered last season with lofty aspirations. Dreaming of a possible BCS bid and touting the Heisman candidacy of quarterback Case Keenum, the wheels came off en route to a disappointing 5-7 campaign. 2011 finds the Cougars humbled and hungry for a return to the heights of a 10 win 2009 season that saw them rack up victories over Texas Tech and Oklahoma State and Keenum throw for 5,671 yards. The Cougars have essentially been given a mulligan. Keenum was granted an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA and returns to lead them once again, minus the Heisman hype.
Coach Kevin Sumlin will have an explosive offense to lead the way, and another berth in the Conference USA champioinship game could be a possibility if the defense can hold together. Like any weekend duffer with a sense of his own limitations, the Cougars have put the driver back in the bag and brought out the 3 wood, cooling the BCS hype and just trying to get this one in the fairway. “Best in the nation”– it’s beginning to feel like a birthright for the TCU defense, which has brought home that hardware three years running. No team has done it four times running, at least not since the NCAA started keeping stats. Every year the savants say TCU must replace too much talent to do it again, and (so far) the savants have been wrong, and then wrong again. Can the Frogs make history, while (again!) making other teams cry?

Have you been spending an inordinate amount of time thinking about DJ Monroe’s package this offseason?

We here at the BC won’t judge you, we’re understanding that way. In fact, we’ll even offer you a little nudge to give definition to your mental imagery. If you want to understand what’s gonna make DJ the big man on campus, the best place to start is with Boise State’s very own horizontal threat, Jeremy Avery. Although Jeremy doesn’t quite have DJ’s legs and Monroe doesn’t have Avery’s hands they both do a pretty good job of stretching out the opposition when called upon to do so. Boise State did design a special set of looks just to accentuate Avery’s obvious assets. And even though everything is happening behind closed doors this summer, we have a pretty good idea about what Harsin might be doing now that he has his hands on a physical freak like Monroe. (more…)

The billion-dollar Longhorn Network goes live today.
That’s right. Billion. The big daddy with three commas.
If you want to know where we got that number, stay tuned. This post is the first in a three part series analyzing the “License Agreement” between Texas, IMG Communications and ESPN that created the LHN. This installment offers a high altitude overview. Part II delves into economics – and most of what has been written on that subject is wrong. Part III covers the finer points of the contract and will serve as a Q&A for readers.
Care for a glimpse of the future of Texas (and collegiate) athletics? (more…)

The Dallas Morning News has reported that SMU is officially pushing for a spot in a BCS conference. The Big 12 obviously makes the most sense, and is probably the only major conference that would take SMU. I doubt it will happen for at least a year, though, as A&M has failed miserably in its attempts to leave the conference to go lose more games per year in another one. It should be an interesting year or two for SMU, especially if they keep winning.
