KRLD Restaurant Week Begins

Posted by    |    August 15th, 2011 at 9:59 pm

The ultimate foodie event of the year is upon us! KRLD’s Restaurant Week begins today. This is a great time to have a try restaurants that’s prices may have intimated you. Also, many restaurants have items on their menu that are only offered during Restaurant Week, such as Chamberlain’s Duck Confit Spring Rolls. You have to try this!

It’s a perfect time to book summer dining deals at 130 regional hot spots opening up tables, and currently accepting reservations for this special giveback opportunity supporting the North Texas Food Bank and Lena Pope Home the week of August 15-21, 2011. The event continues through September 4, 2011.

The event showcases North Texas’ thriving culinary scene, offers tasty three-course prix fixe dinner priced at only $35/person (tax, tip and drinks billed separately). The icing on the cake is that you help support local fine dining establishments and two great charities – making a $7 donation to either the North Texas Food Bank in Dallas or Lena Pope Home in Fort Worth. Last year they raised over $600,000 for these great organizations.

BONUS TIP: Make a purchase of $25 or more at any Central Market location, to receive a certificate redeemable for a FREE fourth course valid at participating restaurants.

Where will you be dining? Enjoy & make your reservations at the participating restaurants here!

Enjoy Chick-fil-A Til The Cows Come Home!

Posted by    |    July 8th, 2011 at 4:30 pm

Today might not seem like a significant day, but in fact it’s Cow Appreciation Day. As you know, my family is a fan of Chick-fil-A and on “Cow Appreciation Day,” they give away free ENTREES & COMBO MEALS depending how much you come in dressed like a cow.You can print out their cow costume kit here if you need help or create our own “costumes.”

With the help of its “Eat Mor Chikin” cows campaign, Chick-fil-A was recognized in 2010 as one of the top “Marketers of the Year” by Advertising Age, and as one of J.D. Power and Associates’ “Top Restaurant Brands in Customer Satisfaction.”

In preparation for this day, I sat down with Chick-fil-A’s President & Chief Operating Operator Dan T. Cathy, who was in Dallas to celebrate the advertising campaign at the headquarters of its creator, The Richards Group. (more…)

Can you say, “Molto Delizioso?”

That’s Italian for very delicious and that perfectly describes the new Ristorante Nicola on Preston Road.

I was already a fan of the location at The Shops at Legacy, so I was happy to be invited to a luncheon at the Preston Road location this week.

Although we chose from a set menu of three entrees, I had the opportunity to taste all three:  Involtini de Pollo (chicken breast with fontana, sage, gorgonzola, polenta, asparagus and red wine sauce); Salmone Grigliato alla Senape (grilled salmon, sauteed baby veggies and mustard sauce); and, my fave, Raviolotti di Vitello (spinach pasta stuffed with veal, spinach, ricotta in sage butter sauce).  Mouth watering yet?

Raviolotti di Vitello

The pasta was tender, and the sage butter sauce mixed with the veal stuffing brought on a big “mmm-mm” several times during the meal.  And you can’t go wrong with big, fat parmesan cheese shavings either!

The new Nicola differs in atmosphere from the Plano location – a more elegant feel than the rustic interior up north.  I kept taking mental notes on how I could recreate the gorgeous light fixtures with my hot glue gun and very limited knowledge of electronics.

And finally, I can’t say enough about the very professional, attentive and courteous staff.  Everyone from the valet to the waiters, managers and event sales person made our happiness their first priority.

Pork Fetish Anyone?

Posted by    |    August 23rd, 2010 at 10:30 am

Yep, I thought it was time I admitted it…I have an extreme pork fetish. I love all things pork — bacon, sausage, shanks, loin, belly, chicharrón — you name it, if it comes from a pig and is edible then I’m all over it. Now I’ve eaten a lot of pork dishes in Dallas, but recently I found my favorite: the crispy pork shank at Bolsa being served up this summer. I could talk about the bed of wonderful fresh local vegetables that the shank sat atop or the perfect sauce and seasonings…but alas, I want to focus for the moment on the pork.

It was a perfect piece of perfectly cooked pork (yes, I used ‘perfect’ twice; it is necessary redundancy!). Crispy, golden brown on the outside and fork-tender on the inside. I know in this day and age, talking about fatty anything is taboo but when you’re talking quality pork products, you’ve got to use the “f” word. This shank had the perfect amount of fat so that it crisped nicely and was oh so juicy. For aficionados, ‘lean’ and ‘pork’ are mutually exclusive.

Best Foodie Restaurant Value in Dallas?

Posted by    |    July 7th, 2010 at 5:52 pm

Well, I finally got to Urbano Café after hearing about it for awhile and having made several attempts to snag a reservation … this place fills up fast! Urbano is located on Fitzhugh between Ross and Bryan, snugly between Tom Spicer’s great local produce storefront and Jimmy’s Italian Foods both of which provide additional reasons to pay a visit. It’s open for lunch and dinner, Tuesday through Thursday.

So ardent was my desire to try Urbano Cafe that I actually took a 5:30 p.m. reservation on a Saturday. Rave reviews from several foodie friends set my expectations high. Would it live up to the hype? Or fizzle like a hot summer movie with a great trailer but no real cinematic value? Keep reading!

There’s a New Breakfast Sheriff in Grapevine

Restaurant critic Luke with his "Dutch Baby"

We tend to be a fairly skeptical family when it comes to most claims — “Best Dry Cleaner,” “Best Service,” “Biggest Selection” — we hear it all the time. So, when we ventured over to the new Original Pancake House in Grapevine, we were skeptical of claims that their pancakes would be truly remarkable.

Their location is a little hard to find, having moved into the former Denny’s location on William D. Tate (close to Hooters and Bone Daddy’s if that helps)  Upon arrival, we were greeted by everyone, including the owners, and the whole staff exuded enthusiasm including our server who wanted to know all our names (and remembered them through the whole meal).

In addition to a wide variety of pancakes, they boast two signature items: the Apple Pancake, a single large pancake smothered with sauteed apples and cinnamon sugar; and the “Dutch Baby.”
