Once again, Plano had it’s All American 4th Fireworks at Oak Point Park and Nature Preserve. Along with the great fireworks, you could listen in to a selection of patriotism inspiring music on KLAK 97.5 FM. Oak Point is the largest park in Plano, and it’s an ideal place to hold a fireworks display. If you can manage the crowds, there is lots of parking at Collin County College and the Plano Centre, as well as partake of the various vendors food and drink.

The park is nicely located, so that if don’t want to brave as much traffic and crowds, there are many other great vantage points to see the fireworks. This year, we decided to perch ourselves near Parker and Los Rios. It overlooks the park area, so you can get a nice unobstructed view. We were joined by many people with their kids, dogs, lawn chairs, and picnic baskets. Other places First United Methodist Church, or even the shopping areas near Spring Creek Parkway and Ave. K offer a decent view.

And the bombs bursting in air...

This years display started right on time, with the first launch right at 9:30. There was a nice variety of chrysanthemum-style, nice designs, lots of colors, and some that just made that huge satisfying >BANG<. And of course, great music to go along, and lots of ooh’s and aah’s from the crowd.

The whole show lasted about 20 minutes, with a huge finale to wrap up the show. Another successful 4th celebration.

Since we were on more on the outskirts of Plano, and wanted to avoid most of the traffic, we took the scenic route by South Fork Ranch. And the kids got a nice bonus, since that also got us a chance to see part of the Richardson fireworks display in Breckenridge Park! A nice way to finish off the days celebration.

Did you happen to see it? I almost missed it, too. On May 12th, the Kiwanis Club of Plano had a Butterfly Festival in Collin Creek Mall. We had inadvertently discovered a fun and educational outing for my daughters. Inside the mall, there was a large mesh tent filled with butterflies. But for my daughters, is got even better. Not only did you get to see them, but you got to go into the tent and be surrounded by them.

The Butterfly Festival @ Collin Creek Mall

They give you a Q-tip dipped in Gatorade, so you have something to attract them a little. At that point, you just turn your child loose in there and let them start collecting butterflies on themselves. With the thousands in the tent, it doesn’t take long.

Getting Butterfly Kisses

Most of the butterflies were of the Monarch variety. They covered the ceiling of the tent, and also fed on the variety of flowers that were available for purchase. Complete with a butterfly of your own.

A Monarch Butterfly

Inside the text was one of the Kiwanis members to help out. He’d help the kids get butterflies on their heads and was also happy to share his knowledge of butterflies with everyone. Although fewer in number, he was happy to point out several other varieties of butterflies you can find flitting around the inside of the tent.

Spicebush Swallowtail

One of the prettier butterflies (besides the Monarch, of course), was the Spicebush Swallowtail. I only saw one of them in the entire tent, and it shy compared to the others. It rarely openned its wings to show it’s full colors and wingspan. It also tended to like the ceiling of the tent, which made it more difficult to get a close look.

A Common Buckeye Butterfly

The Common Buckeye butterfly had a lot more friends in the tent, and much more accommodating to being watched. They are common, as varieties of this butterfly are found throughout North America.

Covered in Butterflies

To a child the Butterfly Festival was a place of wonder and fun. Just a simple thing can put a smile on your childs face. Especially when your child loves all kinds of animals and wildlife – and managed to make friends with that Spicebush Swallowtail and get it show it’s full wingspan! But the fun didn’t stop there, since you could take a little of the Butterfly Festival home with you!

Monarch Chrysalis

You were able to purchase your own Monarch Chrysalis to take home. So we did. And tonight, I got to see the look of excitement on their faces when we discovered the first butterfly had emerged. Right now, you can still see that the wings are a little crumpled and wet. But by tomorrow, it should be ready to be set free. My daughters can hardly wait.

There have been lots of news stories about coyotes, bobcat and raccoon sightings around neighborhoods recently. A lot of times they are looking for shelter/water and come up to the porch for a closer look at what might be waiting for them on your porch.

Some people have taken to feeding wildlife and as a result, they become accustomed to people and will be regular visitors. Animal control recommends eliminating the attractions, like water or food left out for your pets. They ask us to remember that they were here first and to keep our distance.

What is your opinion on wildlife interaction with people?

After breaking yet another daily heat record in North Texas, Mother Nature decided to smile upon us and give us an impressive display Thursday night. A nice line of thunderstorms marched across North Texas, complete with a most impressive light show. With Texas suffering from one of the hottest summers on record, and severe drought conditions, any relief was welcomed.

Unfortunately we didn’t get as much rain as we needed, generally only about 1/2 inch. Several area lakes are still several feet below full levels, and most areas are under water conservation rules and burn bans. But the cold front did bring some relief to the high temperatures we’ve been having all summer. We’ll be enjoying temperatures about 10-15 degrees lower than we’ve had for a while, just in time for the State Fair of Texas.

It was nice to know that Mother Nature hasn’t completely forgotten about us.

Right by the new cult following Chuy’s on the East side of the tollroad, will be another tempting place to stretch your waistlines.

Many people that have not been to Bone Daddy’s are very surprised. This place is a mix of Hooters, Brickhouse, and Dickey’s BBQ. Some feel awkward going to places like this with your wife and kids.

Older gentlemen, I’m sure, feel like creepy old men. And the 20 something guy crowd couldn’t be happier!

The waitresses wear tight clothes, but the majority should think twice before they show up to work.

They do not close until midnight and prepare to have a little issue with your waitress and her timing on refills and service. I’m sure they are encouraged to mingle with the customers. But TVs are everywhere!
Their focus is barbeque, but they have a fantastic chicken fried steak.

So before you make the 45 minute wait at Chuy’s before your movie which is walking distance, in late 2011 you will have another choice Bone Daddy’s!

(Or be smart and take the Drive Thru at In-N-Out Burger 5 minutes away!)

If you wonder what Plano is like, here’s a typical site in West Plano. Still open land, this is at
Corporate and the Dallas North Tollroad on JCPenney headquarters property. Beautiful horses and their foals, about 25 horses, we are guessing.

I think we kind of take this for granted. In the distance is the Dallas North Tollway and Shops of Legacy – a stones throw away. Just so you know there are lots of SUV’s and pickup trucks too but most the cowboys are in Ft. Worth.

My son loves to hear that we are going to feed the horses slices of apples. They all come galloping over and it’s all worth it to see the smile on his face.

On the opposite side there are Longhorns ranging from 600 pounds up to 1,400 pounds. And no, we do not try to feed them.
This is a great activity for anyone who has little ones and wants something different to do!
