Pam’s Annual Sugar ‘N Bubbly Holiday Party

Posted by    |    December 22nd, 2010 at 10:12 am

“An invitation like none other”

That’s what the invitation read, so expectations were high as I headed out to this soiree on Saturday!

The hostess provided the champagne and wine and guests brought a dessert.  This party was for ladies only.  I thought this was super cute idea for a party.

The genius in this idea is that women LOVE to eat sweets but we always feel we have to be dainty in front of men.  Get us alone and we women can hoark down a pie in 2 minutes flat.

And let me tell you, there were some happy tummies at the end of this sugary affair.

The only bad thing is that once all the guests leave, what do you do with all of those left-over desserts!?

Santa is resting up for his long journey

Posted by    |    December 21st, 2010 at 4:42 pm

We’re not really sure how he does it, but each year Santa Claus successfully manages to trek his way around the world in his reindeer-powered sleigh, bringing cheer to all the good girls and boys. While we’re sure he stays plenty caffeinated with his endless supply of hot coco and poorly assembled cookies, he must need one heck of a night’s rest on the Eve of Christmas Eve.

Tomorrow, December 22, Santa is making a stop at DUXIANA from 5:30pm-8:30pm for a luxurious nap at the Preston Center location. Kids can come sit with Santa for an old-school Polaroid photo, and DUXIANA owner Serena Cole is hosting a cookie decoration station for the little tykes to keep their hands busy while mom and dad browse the bedding. Guests have the option of leaving warm clothing for foster care children benefitting from Friends of Wednesday’s Child.

Happy Holidays and a wonderful night’s rest to all!

DUXIANA is located at 6134 Berkshire Ln., Dallas, Texas 75225

Now Open: La Fiorentina

Posted by    |    December 20th, 2010 at 10:11 am

I was lucky enough to run into Alberto Lombardi last week at Taverna (my favorite restaurant) who gave me a sneak peak at his new restaurant, La Fiorentina: A Tuscan Steakhouse.

It occupies the old Chip’s Burgers on Cole Ave.Pictured is Carlo Alessina holding up the biggest shrimp I have EVER seen and a Branzino fish from Greece.

Alberto says, “Our latest creation transports you to a timeless Tuscany. Located in an iconic Church dating back to the 1800s, La Fiorentina unveils a warmly authentic Tuscan Steakhouse menu. In this ideal setting recalling the atmosphere of a small Tuscan Village, our attentive staff will make you feel at home while our Italian chefs use only the best seasonal ingredients to blend Italian and American flavors with uncompromising results.” (more…)

Jerry Sutterfield Named Coach of the Year

Posted by    |    December 16th, 2010 at 3:09 pm

There’s lots of reasons why Highland Park is consistently named one of America’s Top 20 high schools. One of those reasons is Jerry Sutterfield. A big, friendly country boy with a passion for straw hats and teaching kids, girls cross country coach and Athletic Director for Women’s Sports Jerry Sutterfield was recently named the 2010-11 4A-5A Coach of the Year by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.

Over the past 25 years, Sutterfield has built HP’s girls cross country into more than a sports dynasty (although it is certainly that); it is a place where teenage girls find solace, support, and strength. It is impossible to measure, or put into words, the impact that Sutterfield has had on the hundreds of girls who’ve run through his program, but the girls themselves eloquently made their case at last week’s HPCC Banquet where the praise came in wave after wave. Sutterfield, who coached this year’s cross country team to a 4A team state championship in November, is a tough fellow who is also prone to cry. This heartfelt emotion has endeared him to kids and parents (like me) who are lucky enough to have a daughter under Sutterfield’s encouraging mentorship. Congratulations to a fantastic guy who epitomizes what great coaching is all about.

DUXIANA resolves our need for snooze buttons

Posted by    |    December 15th, 2010 at 3:43 pm

We have a very difficult time getting out of bed in the morning without hitting the snooze button several times before finally trudging to the kitchen to make that first pot of coffee. We also sincerely miss naptime of elementary school days past. So when we are invited to spend part of the workweek relaxing on luxurious bedding, we’re there like Rip Van Winkle on Ambien. (Assuming he arrived prior to falling asleep.)

Last week, Serena Cole, Owner of DUXIANA, and real estate reporter, Candy Evans, welcomed select real estate professionals and interior designers to the posh store for heavy hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. “The event was great [...] it was a great turn out, lots of designers, lots of realtors, and it was a lot of fun,” said Cole of the event at her store in Preston Center. Highland Park Hockey Beats Garland, 4-2

Posted by    |    December 7th, 2010 at 8:47 am

The Highland Park Hockey team defeated Garland for the second time in the past three weeks by a score of 4-2 last Thursday (senior Brooks Kelley pictured at left).  Unlike the last two games, the Scots played a solid first period on defense and were tied 0-0.  Two minutes into the second period the Scots capitalized on a Garland penalty as senior captain Stephen Callaghan scored a power play goal assisted by junior captain Nolan Baade and freshman Connor Crow. After a Garland goal, senior captain Crockett Burr skated into the offensive zone and scored assisted by Crow to make it 2-1 after the second period. The Scots would score again early in the third period as sophomore Aidan Schorsch scored off of Crow’s third assist of the game. Callaghan completed the scoring for the Scots with just over a minute to play with an assist by senior James Emanuelson making the final score 4-2.  Senior goalie Matthew Crow recorded his league-tying seventh victory on the season while registering 27 saves for a 93% save percentage.  With the victory, the Scots are now 7-3-0 on the season and one game back of Marcus in the East Division.

The Scots next game is Thursday, December 9 against Lovejoy at the Dr Pepper StarsCenter in McKinney. More photos below.

Scots Amazing Season Ends, 45-21

Posted by    |    December 1st, 2010 at 7:52 am

Before the 2010 Highland Park Football campaign began, know-it-all media types were forecasting that this team would be lucky to go 7-3. The Scots had too little experience and too many good teams to play, not the least of which was the area’s #1 ranked team, Everman. From that first game until tonight, the gutsy gang whose motto was “Whatever It Takes” piled up thrilling win after thrilling win. At least three of the games — Everman, Sherman, and Wiley — will go down among the most exciting Scots games ever. This team kept alive our incredible 63-game home winning streak. It gave us a joyous Homecoming victory. It earned Highland Park an extra playoff game at Highlander which delighted local fans. This team earned a District 10-4A Championship, then a Bi-District Championship, then an Area crown. It celebrated the extraordinary success of its coach, Randy Allen, with his record-setting 135th win as HP’s leader. And lastly, tonight, it gave our team and our band, cheerleaders, Belles, and fans a truly singular experience of playing in Cowboy Stadium.
