Highland Park had not beaten their arch rivals of Rockwall Heath in three years, and on this chilly night at Scotland Yard, it looked like Heath might prevail again as they jumped out early, 3-0. But the Scots fought back. Sophomore pitcher Matt Wilson hurled five scoreless innings while the HP batters, led by Chris McDade, Jake Howeth, Ryan Romo, Ford Stainback, Aaron Falgoust and others dug in and got key hits. But a late rally by Heath put HP down by a run going into the bottom of the 7th. Then Chris McDade got a terrific line drive double, bringing up senior Ben McElroy. McElroy took a strike, then took a titanic cut at a fastball and drove it more than 400 feet over the centerfield fence. The capacity crowd exploded, and Coach Fred Oliver led the celebration as the Scots took solid hold of the #1 ranking in the state.
