Friday night, late November 2011. Waco ISD Stadium, the third round of the Texas state 4A playoffs. Two legendary football programs, Tyler John Tyler vs. Dallas Highland Park. In a game for the ages, John Tyler showed why it is the pride of East Texas with an amazing, thrilling 42-39 victory.

Quarterback Greg Ward had a career night, showing laser accuracy with 17-19 passing for 217 yards and one touchdown (to wideout Reggie Gipson). Ward added 104 yards rushing on 15 carries for another 2 TDs. Fred Ross had two exciting runs and six catches, and receiver Darion Flowers averaged a whopping 19 yards per catch on five receptions.

Head coach Dereck Rush devised a brilliant game plan and showed why his squad is the team to beat for the 2011 State Championship. The team had incredible support from the Lion Band — which never stopped playing! — the fabulous Brigadettes, enthusaistic cheerleaders, and thousands of fans who drove long hours to Waco to show their pride for their school.

Congratulations on a great win!
