Untapped Festival: Indie Music and Beer at Gilley’s

When it comes to having a good time beer and music is one of, if not the, best combinations to make that happen. If you agree with this statement then get yourself down to Gilley’s  tomorrow for the annual Untapped Festival. See, the organizers of Untapped Festival saw that at both music and beer festivals there was always an imbalance, beer festivals rarely had good music and music festivals rarely had good beer. So they decided to give you both by bringing you some of the best up and coming artists both in music and in craft beer. At Untapped Festival  you’ll get to enjoy  a selection of over 200 different kinds of beer from 60 different breweries and  hear music from 4 indie music acts from around the country. Artisans and food trucks will also be there hanging out with the brewers and musicians creating what the organizers like to call “vibrant village activity.”

The Gets at The Jack Daniel’s Saloon

Posted by    |    June 27th, 2013 at 5:34 pm

gets2If you’ve never heard of or listened to Dallas’ The Gets I would like to use part of their bio as an introductory description of them and their music. “Imagine gliding on the wind in a kaleidoscope sky with your own special parade of garden gnomes dancing, singing, and giggling behind you. While surfacing on the horizon is a unique sense of the unknown yet every inch of the universe combines well enough through this spectrum to restore confidence in each step you take closer to inner-self peace and happiness….and since you’re there, say hello to THE GETS!!”

While my experience listening to their music wasn’t quite as ethereal, the description does allow you to get a feel for their the rock/acoustic,indie,experimental sound. The Gets will be bringing their upbeat and eclectic sound the the Jack Daniel’s Saloon July 5th, giving you a fun addition to your 4th of July Weekend. Go here to check out some of their songs and other upcoming shows.

When: Friday July 5th, 8pm

Where: Jack Daniel’s Saloon

Mac Miller’s Space Migration Tour with Chance the Rapper and The Internet

Posted by    |    June 25th, 2013 at 6:03 pm

This Wednesday the Palladium is going to be lit up with energy and rhymes as they welcome Pittsburg’s own Mac Miller and his Space Migration tour featuring Chance the Raper and The Internet.

macmiller3

Mac Millers talent for rhyming has been generating buzz since 2007 when he released his first two solo albums The Jukebox and Highlife, this combined with the reputation he built within the Pittsburg freestyle/battle circuit  landed him a record deal with Rostrum Records in 2010.

Since then his early local buzz and social media dominance have translated into sold out shows across the world and given Mac the title of the first independent artist since 1995 to debut atop the Billboard charts with his album “Blue Slide Park“, all happening with little to no radio play. Take a listen to Mac’s newest album Watching Movies with the Sound Off and check out the  t teaser from his Macadelic tour if you can’t wait for Wednesday.

Dale Earnhardt jr. jr. at the Loft 5.10.13

Posted by    |    May 9th, 2013 at 8:38 pm

Dale-Earnhardt-Jr-JrThis Friday, Dallas welcomes the Detroit indie duo Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. to the Loft at Gilley’s Dallas, and let’s give them a warm Texas welcome  shall we? They deserve it for making some fun tracks that will fit perfectly with the summer time fun that’s on its way. Their new track If you didn’t see me (You weren’t on the dance floor) should definitely be on one if not all your your summer playlists this year. It’s a fun, breezy tune with a good beat and a little bit of sass that elicits images of nights spent workin’ up a sweat under rainbow lights.

The rest of the songs on their new EP, entitled Patterns, follow a similar sound with a couple that are a little slower and emotional but none that come off as too heavy for a warm nights spent dancing with friends

Cat Power 1.25.13

Posted by    |    January 25th, 2013 at 11:11 pm

cat-power-sun-1If you saw Juno one of the songs you most likely remember from the movie is Cat Power’s cover of Phil Phillips song Sea of Love. Employing her style of minimalist yet strongly emotive folk, Cat Power brought a dreamy and bittersweet feeling to the R&B classic. Late last year Cat Power a.k.a singer/song writer Chan Marshall released her latest album entitled Sun. While the sound of Sun is similar to Sea of Love and other previous work by Cat Power, this time she chose to step away a little from her minimalism and employ some more complex and danceable musical arrangements, in a sentence the album is ”a passionate pop album of electronic music filtered through a singer-songwriter’s soul” (via)

Urban Market: A South Dallas Provider

From wine to Raman Noodles, the Urban Market provides supermarket items in the comfort of a small convenient store setting.

According to the Urban Market website, they are the only full-service grocery store serving the downtown Dallas area.

Along with its stocked shelves of popular name-brand items, Urban Market plays host to a café with delicious-looking foods on the menu.

Urban Market has two locations. I explored the one located at 1409 South Lamar in the basement of the red South Side building.

What I loved about this place is its convenience. Residents who live in the lofts on the floors above can be at the market in as long as it takes to push a button and call the elevator. (more…)
