Charles Smith II Fashion Show @ Guapo Skate Park

Posted by    |    March 31st, 2014 at 7:09 pm

Last Friday at Guapo Skills Center in The Cedars, Designer Charles Smith II debuted his SMITH II Autumn/Winter 2014 collection. My friend Heather Lettieri of DFW Style Daily had one of the best seats in the house, next to Dallas fashion experts Lisa Petty, Cynthia Smoot, and Jeanette Chivvis. “Last year, Charles piqued my interest with his obvious talent,” Heather told me. “But with this collection he solidified his place as someone-to-watch. This collection seems inspired by the likes of Rick Owens with an obvious nod to Chanel tailoring. The clothing was daring as usual and nearly flawlessly executed. In just one year Charles has expertly refined his skill and grown into his designer status.” I’ve heard only good things about Charles Smith and I can’t wait to see what’s next for him.

Baby Back Shak’s New Look

Posted by    |    March 28th, 2014 at 7:47 pm

It was lunch time and I needed to go to Baby Back Shak. As I pulled into their parking lot and realized they weren’t open, I almost had a nervous breakdown. I’m glad I didn’t do anything rash in my desperation, because later, I would learn that they were only temporarily closed for remodeling. I finally got my fix today.

I remember noting, during my first visit to Baby Back Shak, that the place was quite dark on the inside and very modestly decorated. I didn’t mind, though, because it reminded me of Freddy’s BBQ Joint on House Of Cards –  no windows, no fluff, just ridiculously good ribs. I wish I had taken photos then, because the before/after comparison is amazing.

Baby Back Shak is now even more wonderful with its new front door, wall of windows, and bright red exterior featuring a caricature of the King Of Barbecue himself, owner Clarence Cohens. All the new details on the inside, including a lit up “BBQ” sign and sturdy aluminum chairs, will make your heavenly lunch that much more delightful. The place still has that same good old hometown feeling – the new changes simply add a little more flavor to the atmosphere.

I had a rib plate with potato salad and beans. The ribs fell right off the bone in all their uniquely flavorful glory, the potato salad was fresh and delicious, and the beans were awesome. I thought those were my favorite items on the menu until I tasted (and then ate most of) my friend’s spicy green beans.

Baby Back Shak is located at 1800 S Akard St in South Dallas. You’ll probably see me there a lot this Summer. I apologize in advance for the sauce all over my face.

2 Chainz @ South Side Ballroom

Last week at South By Southwest, Def Jam Records celebrated its 30th anniversary at Stubbs BBQ. 2 Chainz was among the performers there, which also included Pusha T and YG. Tonight, 2 Chainz is performing again for everyone in Dallas who missed out on the SXSW action. He’ll be at South Side Ballroom with August Alsina opening for him at 8:00. Don’t miss it!

At the age of sixteen, Lorde blessed us with her debut EP, The Love Club. That was 2012, and since then, she’s released her debut album, Pure HeroinLorde’s music is dance-inducing, a little dark, and definitely fresh. I’ve never seen her live, but judging by the live recordings I’ve watched repeatedly on YouTube, she puts on a pretty great show. If you’re one of the lucky people who snatched up tickets to tonight’s sold out show at Gilley’s South Side Ballroom, I deeply envy you. I would ask you to post as many photos, videos, and updates to Twitter and Instagram as possible during the performance, but the jealousy may overwhelm me, and I wouldn’t want you to miss out on the magic on stage. Check in to Gilley’s on Facebook, let all your friends post their jealous comments, take one photo to capture the memory, and then just put your phone away and take it all in.

The Pixies @ Gilley’s South Side Ballroom

Last Friday, Pixies performed at Gilley’s South Side Ballroom. If you  missed it like I did, check out this playlist of the full Pixies set list from Friday (with the exception of Silver Snail, which is not on Spotify but was played between Nimrod’s Son and Ed Is Dead). I’m sad to have missed the show, but at least this playlist includes co-founder Kim Deal, who left the band in June of last year. “No Kim, No Deal” is a new motto for die-hard fans of the band’s former bassist and backing vocalist. On the bright side, she’s still the sole continual member of The Breeders, formed in 1990, whose song Off You was just featured in Spike Jonze’s spectacular Oscar-winning movie Her.  I’m hoping The Breeders come to South Dallas soon!
