Dressing For a Texas Fall

Posted by    |    November 14th, 2011 at 9:50 am

During a Texas fall morning you usually can get by with a light jacket and a scarf.

I’m wearing a jean jacket my dad just gave me that he’s worn since the 70′s and the briefcase he bought a week before he married my mom when he was in Hawaii for a military R&R.

By the time the sun has been up it gets pretty warm.  Take off some of your layers and enjoy the perfect temperature for a lunch on a patio.

I’m wearing a gown I bought from Neiman’s with no reason except I liked it.  I’m dressing it down with a women’s one-piece bathing suit underneath and a j.crew button-up tied on top.

More then likely it will rain at some point in the day.  So make sure you have a pair of wellies on hand and an umbrella in your car.

I’m wearing my favorite Marc Jacobs rain boots that I got from Barney’s and a huge Nike umbrella.

Now you’re set to properly get by for a Texas fall day!  Please visit Kittens and Pitbulls to see the rest of the pictures from this shoot.

Spring 2012 Sneak Peek

Posted by    |    October 24th, 2011 at 10:28 am

If you’re wishing for crisp fall weather like me, then Spring 2012 may not be at the forefront of your mind.  However, the beautiful new trends for the upcoming season are so drool-worthy, I had to give you a sneak peek at what lovelies lie ahead. In case you missed the unveiling of these trends at fashion week, here are my top three:

Pastels.  This color trend is coming back in a big way, thanks to the resurgence of lady-like fashion.  Pastels are flattering on virtually every skin tone and look polished, pretty, and feminine.  Major design houses Louis Vuitton, Phillip Lim and Diane Von Furstenberg all showed off their latest in pastels.

How To Wear Rain Boots

Posted by    |    October 10th, 2011 at 3:14 pm

A few years ago I was in New York City and saw women everywhere with them on.  I’d never really seen them worn fashionably before, and it caught me off guard how many passersby I saw rocking the rain boot or “wellies”. (Or galoshes, for those a tad more old school.)  Most rainboot brands and styles now come in a traditional version or a glossy version, which made them more appealing. How exactly do you wear these practical shoe staples and still look cute?  I have a few simple suggestions.

1. Show off your legs.

These boots are meant to be fun, bold, and not taken too seriously.  They look mad cute with shorts, especially the denim cut-off kind or more casual preppy pair.  Avoid large/baggy shorts or skirts that come too close to over the knee.  Remember how all the celebs starting wearing their UGG boots with flirty skirts and shorts a few years ago?  Same concept here, but you can get these as soaking wet as you want.

2. Leggings (or “jeggings“) are your friend.

It’s a no-brainer to wear these functional boots with functional leggings.  It’s comfy, it’s warm, and it’s easy to dress up or down.  If your rain boots are solid-colored, you can go nuts with the different kinds of leggings you pair with them…patterned, lace, striped, ribbed.  If your wellies are patterned (like this hot Gucci pair,), stick to denim jeggings or solid leggings so you aren’t hurting the eyes of everyone around you.

Your Feet Will Thank You: Where to Buy Cute and Comfy Flats

Posted by    |    October 6th, 2011 at 7:30 am

The word “flat” may have a negative connotation, but it certainly doesn’t when it comes to shoes. Flats have been a girl’s other best friend for years, saving feet one shopping trip at a time. Heck, they’ve become so widely popular that even Dr. Scholl’s created a foldable, rollable pair in three sizes for women to pack in their purse on the go (for under $10, no less). Flats are perfect for travel, daytime, nighttime, anytime, so why not invest in several pairs that you can use when giving those sky high Choo’s a rest? Here are a few local places who carry the best selection around.

Stanley Korshak at The Crescent: When looking for a top-notch designer flat, Korshak is the stuff dreams are made of. With a broad range from Toms to Lanvin, the shoe department carries every color, size, and shape you could want. If you’re feeling a little wild, try the Guiseppe Zanotti ballet flat in Leopard Pony Hair for $595. An investment for sure, but what a gorgeous one.

Slim Down With Invisibelt

Posted by    |    September 30th, 2011 at 12:04 pm

Ever feel like you need a belt to tighten your jeans and pants (or to help avoid a “plumber effect” when bending over,) but you don’t necessarily want the bulk and weight of a heavy belt and belt buckle?  I’ve struggled with this myself, and if you’re wearing your shirt untucked, it can create an unsightly bump in your mid-section.  One of the cool new gadgets designed to help with this problem is the Invisibelt.  I know, I know…sounds too infomercial-esque, but it’s actually a very clever idea that I can’t believe no one else thought of before now.  It’s only $20, and works like a bra clasp.

Now for the features according to the Invisibelt website:

The invisibelt is virtually undetectable and provides an instant slimming effect.

Thanks to its flat clasp design, this “No Buckle Belt” lets women wear fitted tops over pants or skirts with no trace of an unsightly belt buckle detected.

Its unique, adjustable waist size (sizes 0 to 14) makes the invisibelt ideal for the average woman. The plus size belt fits up to a 4X.

Available in two fashionable colors, Naked (Clear) and Noir (black).

The original slim belt eliminates the “all too familiar” back gap.

I don’t know about you, but I absolutely hate that “back gap” thing that some jeans have.  Even designer jeans have it, and it can result in showing the world your “coin slot”, so to speak.  Lucky Magazine, Shape Magazine, Life & Style magazine and many others have featured it, and the word on the street is that many celebs use it to keep their waists cinched without the unflattering belt bulge. Who knew? The next time you’re worried about showing off that new purchase from Victoria’s Secret unintentionally, you may want to check out Invisibelt and order one just to cover your, er…..backside.

Hilary Kennedy’s Feminine Finds for Fall

Feminine is back in a big way this year, so it never hurts to have a few things in your arsenal that are sweet, soft, and downright sultry.

This heart sweater by Asos ($64) is adorable and sexy at the same time…a combo that women have been trying to pull off for centuries.  Remember Britany Spear’s “Hit Me Baby, One More Time” video?  Like or not, this stuff sells. (more…)

Abi Ferrin and the NFL Wives: Star Studded Combo

Posted by    |    September 27th, 2011 at 2:48 pm

This is Dallas; one minute it’s 100 degrees and the next it’s below freezing. That’s why it really didn’t shock anyone when five inches of snow and ice showed up last February 4th when famed designer Abi Ferrin and more than 30 NFL players’ wives took to the runway at the Fairmont Hotel.
The illustrious hotel was host to The 10th Annual Off The Field Players’ Wives Awards Banquet and Fashion Show in support of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This cause is especially dear to the hearts of parents everywhere, since St. Jude  means no family ever pays for treatments not covered by insurance and families without insurance are never asked to pay.
Those who were lucky enough to attend this glamorous event got to rub elbows with Michelle Witten (wife of Jason Witten), Sherice Brown (wife of Tim Brown), and Romonda Jordan (wife of Randy Jordan). The always stunning Pat Smith (wife of Emmitt Smith) helped hand out several prestigious awards and proclaimed Abi Ferrin as one of her go-to designers when she wants to look her best.

Taking their turn in the spotlight, NFL players’ wives commanded the catwalk in Abi’s latest. See the uncut version of the show here:

What many may not know is women rescued from the sex trade in Nepal and Cambodia are an integral part of helping create Abi’s special line of USA-made garments. Employing people like these women and contributing funds to organizations who help these women are part of Ferrin’s mission, and in turn becomes a beautiful by-product of each purchase of her creations.
As a special surprise, the NFL husbands walked with their wives’ on the runway, as well as Miss USA 2010, Rima Fakih, and Miss Teen USA, Kamie Crawford.

As if that parade of stars wasn’t enough, a live and silent auction featured a rare 6.32 carat pink diamond donated by Worldwide Diamond Ventures and exclusively set by Olschwanger Designs.

To say this event was a success is an understatement; it cemented Abi Ferrin as an icon for glamorous women from all walks of life and generated badly needed proceeds for the nation’s top children’s cancer hospital.  Fashion and purpose…it’s a beautiful combination.
