As someone who is now living gluten and refined sugar-free, I have my eye on all things natural and delicious so I don’t wither up into a rice cake ball and blow away. I want tasty. I want exciting. I want DELICIOUS!
Lucky for me and all the rest of you health nuts who don’t want to compromise on taste, I have good news. News that will make you realize there is a whole wide world out there that is all natural, preservative and additive free, fat free, gluten free, kosher certified, and remarkably still the best stuff you’ve ever stuffed in your pie hole.
By now you’re probably thinking I’ve found the Holy Grail of deliciousness. Well, you’re right. Wholly Salsa.

Salsa? Yes, salsa. And recognize the “Wholly”? As in “Wholly Guacamole”? If you’ve ever tried their guac, then you know what I’m guac-in’ bout. It’s darn good stuff. And now they’ve got salsa that is so yummy I’d eat them straight out of the package without any dippers. (more…)

Show Mom that you didn’t forget her special day, Sunday May 13th. Make plans! Our fine city has quite a few delish dining options for Mother’s Day, and one you need to consider is the fabulous Hotel Zaza Mother’s Day Champagne Brunch. Starting the day off the assorted breakfast breads, croissants, bagels, and fresh fruit, Mom will already feel the love. Hey, anytime she doesn’t have to fix breakfast for someone is a good day.

Smoked salmon, foie gras pate, grilled poached shrimp, and egg station, assorted quality meats and dim sum all mean one satisfied Mommy and tummy. Don’t think this is just any meat, either. I’m talking NY strip, leg of lamb, and fried turkey, for goodness’ sake! Cap it off with seven different desserts, including strawberry shortcake parfait and you’ve done your job to make the woman who raised you feel extra special. Make your reservation by visiting this link ($85 per person/$100 with champagne). (more…)

It’s officially THAT time. Time to haul your winter stuff to the back of the closet, under the bed, or off to Good Will. The good news is that when all that is over, you’re left with the light, sweet, summery things that make you feel like planning a beach vacay. I’m slow to change; especially when the weather can’t make up its mind about whether it should be 50 degrees or 80 degrees. If you need a little inspiration like me to get your brain jogging on what to wear for spring, I’ve picked a few fav looks that you may already have hiding in your closet.
Of course, adding new pieces to your growing collection in a sure-fire way to get yourself in the mood to patio dine at Bolsa and picnic at the Arboretum, so hit the mall this weekend while you’re at it.
Look #1: Kate Spade Casual

So, you’re blissfully in love and tying the knot. Most brides have a hard time restraining themselves from hours a day on StyleMePretty and attending every wedding-related event that comes to town. I don’t blame you; I was that girl. But you don’t have to schlep around to every single wedding event to find the vendors, ideas, and handmade goodies that you really love for your big day. Your chance to condense all that event-going is coming up this Saturday at South Side on Lamar, and you don’t want to miss it!

Amberly Washington (Sweethead accessories designer and Jr. League Event Coordinator) hosts the Swoon Event, a wedding market and party that the lover of organic, green, handmade and DIY will heart bigtime. The market will feature over 40 local vendors selling handmade wares, a bridal fashion show, a DJ spinning love songs of the ’70s (I can already hear “Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe” by Barry White, baby), food trucks like Easy Slider and Rockstar Bakeshop, and Oak Cliff lovely Oil and Cotton will be on hand doing DIY demonstrations!
This is Dallas, so no event is complete without a fashion show, ya’ll.

Looking for a fun date this week? I’ve got one for ya.
The Bishop Arts District is giving you a chance to sip fabulous wine, experience beautiful art, and shop at your leisure during the Wine Walk. It’s set to take place this Thursday, March 1st starting at 6:00 p.m.
Attendees can purchase a wine glass from one of the myriad stands around the District for $10 and will be given a list of the shops participating as delicious wine stops. (Sounds kind of a like a wine lovers scavenger hunt to me.)
This Wine Walk also features a pop-up art gallery called The Green House, which will be located at 403 Melba. The opening reception for Havana, Cuba: Te Vemos is from 6:00 to 8:30 and feature the works of photographers Rick Barton (the owner of sinfully delicious Hunky’s), Patricia Richards, and Martha Gordon.
Don’t miss out on your chance to sip, shop, and take advantage of the mildest winter weather we’ve seen in a long time!

Valentine’s Day plans can be repetitive. Dinner. Movie. Flowers.
Not that there is anything wrong with the aforementioned plan, but how’s about a game changer this year? Something to surprise your sweetie and make you feel like one creative cat?
It may sound risky, but why not try the underground dinner? A secret menu until you arrive is one sweet surprise, and will spark the excitement and romance that each Bachelor contestant feels on the fantasy dates. And, it isn’t some random chef at the helm of these CIA-like meals. No way.
Holly Muller of My Private Chef kitchen has added her name to the roster as lead chef for weekly underground dinners. Holly will offer the hottest trend in dining by kicking off the new underground dinner schedule as the featured chef on Friday, February 11th for an exquisite Valentine’s dinner.
The general public can attend the underground dinners by adding their names and email to the underground dinner distribution list found on her website.

Early week, interested attendees will receive a notice of each week’s underground dinner to grant them time to make a required reservation. Guests will be notified of the featured chef within the emailed notice and to BYOB; the dinner menu is undisclosed until the guests arrive. Dinner costs will range from $50 and up depending on the selected menu which always favors small local purveyors. Wine pairings are offered upon request. (more…)

The biggest selling cookie in the United States is the chocolate chip cookie, which is no surprise. (Except to you die-hard Thin Mints people, who have hoards of those delicious morsels in your freezers. Thanks for supporting our Girl Scouts!) But, did you know that chocolate chip cookies were originally called Chocolate Crunch Cookies?
Like all great things in history, they were made by mistake. In 1930, an ingenious woman named Ruth Wakefield was in the midst of baking Butter Drop Do cookies and realized that she was out of bakers chocolate. Not one to give up in the kitchen, she then chopped up a Nestle’s Semisweet Yellow Label Chocolate bar into small pieces and add the pieces into her cookie dough. Though she hoped the chocolate would melt into the dough, the pieces just softened a bit and created the modern day chocolate chip cookie.

Okay, enough trivia. Here’s what you’ve been waiting for…the famous New York Times Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe! (You can find a modified version here at The Other Side of Fifty blog. The photos below are courtesy of this fabulous blog.) (more…)
