The Guide to Summer Preppy

Posted by    |    July 11th, 2012 at 8:18 am

Preppy has never gone out of style. Cardigan sweaters, pearls, madras shorts….all great wardrobe staples.  If going full-out prep isn’t for you, adopting one or two classic pieces to your eclectic wardrobe is always a good idea.  You never know when you might be invited to The Hamptons and suddenly have a J. Crew emergency. My advice?  Be prepared.

Here are a few classic preppy looks to help you decide which key pieces need to make their way into your closet.

Monogrammed Tote

The monogrammed tote is a staple of prepsters everywhere.  If your initials aren’t embroidered on something….well, you are late to the picnic, my friend.  Pick a color you love and will carry all summer long. (Plus, you avoid mix-ups. No one is going to try and take home a tote with your initials on it. Hopefully.)

A tea-length dress

A tea-length dress is a must -have because:

A. It’s conservative enough for any and every event

B. It’s flattering to all body-types

To keep it from appearing too “Stepford Wives“, wear a modern heel and skip the pearls.

Loafers or Boat Shoes

The loafer or boat shoe is another gotta-have item.  These are not only polished, but comfy!  Though I recommend buying a pair in the classic shades of brown, white, or navy, brands like Sperry-Topsider have colorful, metallic, and even patterned versions that are the perfect statement (comfort) shoe.

The floppy hat and classic-cut swimsuit

Summer preppy means a classic-cut swimsuit and floppy hat to shield your delicate skin from the sun.  If wearing an all-black suit doesn’t suit your fancy, a gingham version like this one keeps it real and interesting.  (Or this bikini version by Rugby Ralph Lauren.) Besides a simple floppy hat, bring that sunscreen in your monogrammed tote.  Sunburns are not chic.

Red, White, and Blue

Preppy means unashamedly pro-American, so don’t be afraid to sport at least one piece of red, white, and blue this summer.  From a silk scarf to a no-holds-barred shirt like this one, be proud to show you’re living the dream in the old U.S. of A.

Light the Runway Recap: Dress For Success

Posted by    |    May 21st, 2012 at 2:08 pm

Last Friday night, Tootsies opened their doors for an event that did more than just benefit Dress For Success Dallas-it put smiles on the faces of everyone there.  Not the “I’m smiling because there are photographers surrounding the place” smiles, but real, genuine, unforced smiles of joy.  Hearing the mission of Dress For Success Dallas firsthand from several ladies who have been through the program is something that really strikes a positive chord inside.

Basically, the organization promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. The confidence, the sheer pride in what they’ve accomplished…it’s inspiring, to say the least.

In addition to the priceless inspiration, father-daughter duos walked the runway wearing what can only be described as the most colorful, sparkly, and summertime fabulous clothes you’ve ever seen on a Friday night.  Tootsies was the ideal backdrop for this display, with colorful collections surrounding the runway beckoning attendees to shop their hearts out as soon as the show ended.  With Dress For Success Dallas as your motivation and shopping as your tool to help those in need, how can it get any better?

Denim Trends You Haven’t Tried: 7 for All Mankind

Posted by    |    May 9th, 2012 at 1:51 pm

Denim-it’s in all of our closets, and if someone was peeking into yours, I bet they’d see a short row of different shades of blue, black, or white jeans of varying cuts and styles.  Let’s be real-jeans have become an acceptable uniform for many workplaces, schools, and even church.  So why aren’t there more options to dress up the classics?

7 for All Mankind has always been a brand that exudes relaxed, Southern California style, so it isn’t much of a surprise that they have been taking the lead when it comes to denim trends and making them accessible for everyone from James Franco to your mother.  (Speaking of James Franco, have you seen 7′s spring campaign, “Episodes of an Untitled Film” with James Franco directing a series of short films? Very sexy.)

According to Liat Mazor, the Marketing Manager for 7, ” The new spring line is inspired by a California vibe, a forever cool idea inspired by the glistening sun and the ocean. You’ll see a lot of shimmer, pastels, and brights. ”  Glittery, shimmery jeans aren’t a new thing, but the way 7 for All Mankind does them is. (more…)

Who Are You Trying to Impress?

Posted by    |    May 2nd, 2012 at 7:00 am

It might seem silly, but do you ever wonder why you buy the things that you do?  Is is because you really, truly, deeply love these things, or because it may impress someone else? Do you buy it because it may get your photograph in the local magazines, or because you envision yourself keeping this purchase for years to come?  Dallas is a city full of brand-conscious people, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Designer and luxury items are typically the highest quality and universally classic, which is reason enough to make an investment purchase.

How often, though, do we buy those things in excess simply to keep up with the Joneses….only to find that we are sweating it out when unexpected bills arise thanks to our new Chanel?

I guess the lesson here is this: Buy what you love.  The key word here is YOU.  Not what you think you should have, or what you feel other people expect of you.  You can be just as socially acceptable wearing Jason Wu for Target as the couture Jason Wu. (more…)
