Kristen Stewart: Rebel Style the New Sexy?

Posted by    |    July 27th, 2012 at 7:00 am

Hot on the heels of the release of those unflattering photos of actress Kristen Stewart canoodling with her “Snow White and the Huntsman” director Rupert Sanders, Twi-hards are either wiping away tears or heading for the mall.  How does a 21-year old Stewart, who isn’t known for her warm, fuzzy demeanor or flirtatious attitude hook a 41-year old married father of two and earn the moniker “trampire?”  With rebel style, of course.

Sporting this style is in NO way recommended to begin a tryst with a married person.  But, there may be something ladies can learn from Stewart-men of all ages like a low-maintenance lady.  I think we can all agree that low-maintenance includes the following:

Get the Look (Taylor Swift + Wildfox)

Posted by    |    July 24th, 2012 at 9:29 am

I may be a Southern girl at heart, but when I want to feel my California coolest, I pull on my favorite Wildfox sweatshirt. A little off-the-shoulder action like T. Swift and my coolness factor just about triples. Pair it with an Alexis Bittar ring, Benefit tinted moisturizer and my ever present Tweezerman (so I can attempt T. Swift’s beyond amazing arches) and you’ve got a look that’s casual and comfortable but totally glam.

Keep It Dapper, Keep It Dry

Posted by    |    July 23rd, 2012 at 11:17 am

What do you get when you combine Northpark’s Original Penguin with local mixologist Jason Kosmas? Well, I’m not totally sure, but I did get the most interesting cocktail I have ever tasted at Original Penguin’s ‘Keep it Dapper, Keep it Dry” event last week.

Kosmas showed me the ins and outs of gin by mixing up some pretty peculiar cocktails. His alcohol of choice was Hendrick’s Gin, which claims to be for “those rare individuals who are excited by what is strange and different.” Upon entering the dapper little store, I was given 3 drink tickets and was determined to use all of them. As there were 3 different cocktails to try, I figured I would test them all. I kept it pretty casual the first two rounds but for my third drink, I needed to get daring. We’re talking Fear Factor style.

Christmas in July: Holiday Money Jar DIY

Posted by    |    July 20th, 2012 at 7:00 am

One of the things that I love about style is that it can be anything.  Style is really defined as the process of creating something or the prevailing mode of expression.  Many people have great style because of who they are, not necessarily what they wear or how they wear it.

When I heard about this wonderful idea of sharing for the holidays, I immediately wanted to share it with you now.  In July.  Yes, the holidays are quite a ways off, and most of us are thinking more about what to pack for the pool than decorating the tree, but it brings to mind the warm, fuzzy feeling I used to get as a kid when our church would do a “Christmas in July” gift drive to provide for those in need. I love that this idea is similar in spirit.

A Christmas Jar or Holiday Money Jar is a new tradition that has spread because of author Jason F. Wright.  In 2005, his family decided to put change and dollar bills into an empty mason jar throughout the year and then anonymously give the jar to someone who could really use one.
Wright later wrote this New York Times Best Seller,  Christmas Jars, and the rest of the world fell in love with this modern holiday tradition as well.

What a great idea, right?  We all have loose change, extra dollar bills crumpled in our wallets or purses….just sitting around waiting to be placed into a Christmas jar.  If you have kiddos, this is an especially valuable lesson to teach them as a family.  Helping others in need without expecting a “thank you” or any sort of return is giving at its best.

Want to create your own jar now to have ready by December?  Here are some helpful tips from So Crafty.

  1. Take a jar – pickle, mayonnaise, canning. Anything will work, really.
  2. Wash it out.
  3. Throughout the year drop in your spare change.
  4. Once it is in the jar, don’t touch it.
  5. Let the change add up over the course of a year.
  6. During the holiday season, find someone to give it to anonymously.
  7. You may want to add a note about the tradition of the Christmas or Holiday Jar.

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then I wouldn’t mind anyone copying this style one bit. Happy Holidays!

Feel the Heat at Sizzlin’ Summer Fashion Show

Posted by    |    July 18th, 2012 at 7:00 am

A lively fashion show does something for the soul.  One minute you’re bummed because you have nowhere to wear that new dress, and the next you’re front row near the catwalk showing it off for the photogs. Luckily, Dallas has no shortage of great fashion show events to help you get your fix. On this Friday, July 20th at Ilume on Cedar Springs, Prestige Model Management proudly presents the “Sizzlin’ Summer Fashion Show” benefiting the Red Party Foundation.

The Red Party Foundation raises funds to benefit the Legacy Counseling Center and Founders Cottage. For 20 years, Legacy has provided quality mental health care, substance abuse treatment and special care housing services for people challenged with HIV and AIDS. In honor of this worthy cause, guests will come decked out and dressed to impress in their most fabulous poolside fashions and sip on featured cocktails provided by Hudson Ferus Premium Vodka. All ticket proceeds benefit the Red Party Foundation, which is something everyone can feel good about.

One unique aspect to this event is the array of designs featured.  The runway show will kick off with vintage looks and  then rapidly progress into futuristic designs. Models are slated to showcase summer styles on custom built pool-top runways. Sexy!

If you’re looking for hair and make-up inspiration in real life and not simply on Pinterest, the hair and makeup on models will be done by the spectacular artists of Neiman Marcus and Toni and Guy and will feature designs by New York Fashion Week Couture Designer, Anthony Manfredonia.

Katy Perry’s Future Fashion Aspirations Keeping Her From American Idol?

Posted by    |    July 17th, 2012 at 7:00 am

Katy Perry is white-hot at the moment.  Her new documentary, “Part of Me” is in theaters, her new single “Wide Awake” is topping the charts, and her divorce from Russel Brand is now becoming a distant memory.  So it seems only fitting that as Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez exit American Idol, Perry would be a natural fit.

Katie acted as a guest judge on the show during Season 9, when Simon Cowell was still insulting teen dreams all over the nation.  She knows the drill, she’s delivered the harsh news to hopeful contenders.  So why not return and raise her star quotient as Jennifer Lopez did, right?

Katy Perry: American Idol future?

Wrong. Er, sort-of.  Perry doesn’t dismiss the possibility of her return to American Idol, but doesn’t feel the timing is right.  Mentioning, “I have ideas for two or three big, creative things, and I want to be able to fulfill those ideas, ” rumors have been swirling that her own clothing label or beauty line may be in the works.  It isn’t a far-fetched idea, since her perfume Purr by Katy Perry hit shelves and has done relatively well with young consumers, and her perfume web address is katyperrybeauty.com. (With a web address like that, there is plenty of room to add additional products.)

One can only imagine the colorful, bubble-gummy style that Perry’s fashion might reflect, but the singer seems perfectly happy to continue on with her technicolor persona.  If beauty and fashion are now a fixture on the pop star’s radar, then it looks like Idol won’t be.

Perry may add fashion designer to her list of accomplishments

Save Money Decorating Your Home

Posted by    |    July 12th, 2012 at 10:23 am

Who has extra cash sitting around these days for decorating?  Not me, and probably not you, either.  Wallets are thin and gas prices are high, so the world of DIY has really come into play more than usual.  Besides the tried-and-true purchasing of old furniture at estate or garage sales and refinishing them yourself, other simple methods of making your home look fab have started to surface.  And guess what?  Some of them are free (or very cheap).

Let’s start with The Painted Hive’s magic decal transfer tutorial.  You can create customized jars for your kitchen counter or pantry with these free decal templates.  Genius!

Or, what about burlap wrapped vases and votives?  Simply purchase inexpensive burlap and hot glue it to your votive.  Jayson Home sells them for up to $45!

Besides these two simple DIY projects, Stylelist Home has the most adorable wall decoration that is FREE to make.  Read more about this project and several more on their website here. Enjoy counting those benjamins you’ve saved!

Neiman Marcus and Target Pair Up For the Holidays

Posted by    |    July 11th, 2012 at 4:10 pm

Who could forget the madness that ensued from the Missoni/Target collaboration last fall? Target’s at it again, causing me shopping anxiety 5 months in advance with Women’s Wear Daily’s announcement yesterday that Neiman Marcus and Target are getting together this Christmas for a holiday collection to rival all holiday collections.

The collection hits all 1,763 Target stores as well as 42 select Neiman Marcus stores on December 1 and will be featured on target.com as well as neimanmarcus.com. Items will from $7.99 to $499.99, and with featured designers like Tory Burch, Carolina Herrera, Derek Lam, Diane Von Furstenburg, Jason Wu, Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta, Rag & Bone and more, it’s going to be a very good Christmas indeed.

Last year, I was fearful of the mayhem happening at my local Target and will mourn the loss of Missoni flats and luggage for the rest of my days. Never again! Come November 30, you’ll know where to find me. I’ll be one of the crazies with a tent, a sleeping bag, and a basket full of wine and cheese in line at Target. See you there!
