Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise Divorce: How He Changed Kate

Posted by    |    July 2nd, 2012 at 8:00 am

Most of us aren’t surprised….Hollywood marriages aren’t exactly known for their longevity.  Five years of wedded bliss, one daughter, and the couch jump heard ’round the world later, Miss Kate has jumped ship.  Was it the age difference? Their crazy work schedules? The paparazzi?  Who knows, but this makes the third failed marriage for Tom, and numero uno for Katie Holmes.  I’m starting to wonder if she had a better shot at lasting love with fellow midwestener Chris Klein.

Say what you will about the former Joey Potter from “Dawson’s Creek”, but Katie is a very talented actress who has seemingly crept into the shadows since her marriage to Tom Cruise.

She did some beautiful ads for Ann Taylor (as did fellow celeb divorcee Demi Moore,) and fronted her own fashion line, Holmes and Yang, but her TV and film appearances have been limited.  After all, when “Dawson’s Creek” is what people remember most about you, (other than your famous marriage,) you’ve probably taken on too few projects since the show. Especially with the caliber of talent this girl has, right?

What is undeniable, however, is that marriage to Tom is what made Katie a style star.  She was always fresh and cute, but “cute” doesn’t quite fit the bill of a megastar’s wife.  With one fell swoop, she went from young and fun, to classy and cool.  Instead of friends from the midwest, Kate was sharing dinners with the Beckham’s…and you can’t just show up in Urban Outfitters for dinner with Posh Spice.

From tailored looks and kitten heels to a designer baby, Katie Holmes, take heart.  You may be losing a husband, but you’ve gained a fashion following that has put you on the map for the rest of your life.

How to Pack for a Trip

Posted by    |    May 30th, 2012 at 8:57 am

With this season being the busiest for travel, it leaves things wide open for packing all the wrong things.  Sometimes you’ll get to your destination with the appropriate clothes, shoes, and toiletries in hand, only to realize you’ve left your phone charger at home.  (Don’t you hate that?)  So it stands to reason that having a little help with the packing wouldn’t hurt anyone.  Heck, it might even be worth a $2 investment.

Packing

This is where the Packing Pro App comes in.  When I found this, I realized I didn’t have to forget my toothpaste and socks every single trip. The app’s website touts it as ” your very own portable, personal packing assistant. This powerful, flexible and easy-to-use tool can help you better manage your travel packing needs and expectations“.  Wow. Fancy. (more…)

The Only Salsa You’ll Ever Want to Eat (Plus a Giveaway!)

Posted by    |    May 23rd, 2012 at 3:57 pm

As someone who is now living gluten and refined sugar-free, I have my eye on all things natural and delicious so I don’t wither up into a rice cake ball and blow away.  I want tasty.  I want exciting. I want DELICIOUS!

Lucky for me and all the rest of you health nuts who don’t want to compromise on taste, I have good news.  News that will make you realize there is a whole wide world out there that is all natural, preservative and additive free, fat free, gluten free, kosher certified, and remarkably still the best stuff you’ve ever stuffed in your pie hole.

By now you’re probably thinking I’ve found the Holy Grail of deliciousness.  Well, you’re right.  Wholly Salsa.

Salsa? Yes, salsa.  And recognize the “Wholly”?  As in “Wholly Guacamole”?  If you’ve ever tried their guac, then you know what I’m guac-in’ bout. It’s darn good stuff.  And now they’ve got salsa that is so yummy I’d eat them straight out of the package without any dippers. (more…)

Is Fashion Your Religion or Religion Your Fashion?

Posted by    |    May 22nd, 2012 at 7:00 am

It has come to my attention (thank you, ABCNews.com,) that Pastor Ed Young of Fellowship Church has started a fashion blog called Pastor Fashion.  Kudos to their PR team for getting this story national attention, eh? This article poses an interesting question about how fashion and religion mesh together these days, and judging by the comments, no one seems all that sure.

Is there a way to bridge the gap between dressing to be noticed and dressing to be modest?  Should ministers care about labels and brands?  Should they be sent over swag to hock on their blogs to congregational readers? Or, is this a major leap forward in the world of religion to embrace the cool of our culture?  It stands to be reasoned that we gravitate towards those who look, think, and dress like we do, so more souls stand to be reached if we aren’t all wearing choir robes, right?

Either way, I compiled a few images of famous pastors and their style of choice.  Pinstripes seem overwhelmingly popular with the men of the cloth.

*On a side note, it seems like reverends always have an abundance of shiny, thick hair.  If theology is the secret to that, I’m kicking myself for passing over a religion major in college.

This One is For the Guys: Beard Chat

Posted by    |    May 8th, 2012 at 10:52 am

Guys, it’s pretty tough to write a “beauty” article for you, because it comes off sounding too “frou frou”.  I’ll try to be as masculine as I can, since there are probably four of you reading this and I don’t want to lose what little male readership I have. So, today’s beauty lesson, if you will, is going to be about the importance of a good razor.  Even if you’re sporting the dirty hippie beard or devil-may-care mutton chops, you still have to keep that thing in order at some point.  A good razor is never a bad idea.  I think many of you continue to use the same razor for too long, leaving it dull and preventing you from a smooth shave.

So, today’s take home advice is this: invest in a good razor that allows you to switch the blades out as often as you need to.  Don’t walk around with a permanent five o’clock shadow.  Give your face (and the people who have to make out with it,) a break.  Trim it up and moisturize your face with pleasant smelling products, like Jack Black or Billy Jealousy.  Yes, it’s an investment, but you’ll smell divine, have baby soft skin, and look younger longer.

In case you need ideas about how to groom said beard or facial hair into a sexy style, here are some reference photos:

And if you keep forgetting to buy a new razor, I think this video can give you some hilarious help.

Who Are You Trying to Impress?

Posted by    |    May 2nd, 2012 at 7:00 am

It might seem silly, but do you ever wonder why you buy the things that you do?  Is is because you really, truly, deeply love these things, or because it may impress someone else? Do you buy it because it may get your photograph in the local magazines, or because you envision yourself keeping this purchase for years to come?  Dallas is a city full of brand-conscious people, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Designer and luxury items are typically the highest quality and universally classic, which is reason enough to make an investment purchase.

How often, though, do we buy those things in excess simply to keep up with the Joneses….only to find that we are sweating it out when unexpected bills arise thanks to our new Chanel?

I guess the lesson here is this: Buy what you love.  The key word here is YOU.  Not what you think you should have, or what you feel other people expect of you.  You can be just as socially acceptable wearing Jason Wu for Target as the couture Jason Wu. (more…)
