Kristen Stewart: Rebel Style the New Sexy?

Posted by    |    July 27th, 2012 at 7:00 am

Hot on the heels of the release of those unflattering photos of actress Kristen Stewart canoodling with her “Snow White and the Huntsman” director Rupert Sanders, Twi-hards are either wiping away tears or heading for the mall.  How does a 21-year old Stewart, who isn’t known for her warm, fuzzy demeanor or flirtatious attitude hook a 41-year old married father of two and earn the moniker “trampire?”  With rebel style, of course.

Sporting this style is in NO way recommended to begin a tryst with a married person.  But, there may be something ladies can learn from Stewart-men of all ages like a low-maintenance lady.  I think we can all agree that low-maintenance includes the following:

Get the Look (Taylor Swift + Wildfox)

Posted by    |    July 24th, 2012 at 9:29 am

I may be a Southern girl at heart, but when I want to feel my California coolest, I pull on my favorite Wildfox sweatshirt. A little off-the-shoulder action like T. Swift and my coolness factor just about triples. Pair it with an Alexis Bittar ring, Benefit tinted moisturizer and my ever present Tweezerman (so I can attempt T. Swift’s beyond amazing arches) and you’ve got a look that’s casual and comfortable but totally glam.

Posted by    |    July 18th, 2012 at 7:00 am

A lively fashion show does something for the soul.  One minute you’re bummed because you have nowhere to wear that new dress, and the next you’re front row near the catwalk showing it off for the photogs. Luckily, Dallas has no shortage of great fashion show events to help you get your fix. On this Friday, July 20th at Ilume on Cedar Springs, Prestige Model Management proudly presents the “Sizzlin’ Summer Fashion Show” benefiting the Red Party Foundation.

The Red Party Foundation raises funds to benefit the Legacy Counseling Center and Founders Cottage. For 20 years, Legacy has provided quality mental health care, substance abuse treatment and special care housing services for people challenged with HIV and AIDS. In honor of this worthy cause, guests will come decked out and dressed to impress in their most fabulous poolside fashions and sip on featured cocktails provided by Hudson Ferus Premium Vodka. All ticket proceeds benefit the Red Party Foundation, which is something everyone can feel good about.

One unique aspect to this event is the array of designs featured.  The runway show will kick off with vintage looks and  then rapidly progress into futuristic designs. Models are slated to showcase summer styles on custom built pool-top runways. Sexy!

If you’re looking for hair and make-up inspiration in real life and not simply on Pinterest, the hair and makeup on models will be done by the spectacular artists of Neiman Marcus and Toni and Guy and will feature designs by New York Fashion Week Couture Designer, Anthony Manfredonia.

Pretty Little Liars’ Fashion Don’ts and Dos

Posted by    |    July 17th, 2012 at 8:30 am

Besides watching old reruns of The Hills, one of my favorite guilty pleasures is Pretty Little Liars. Perhaps it stems from my early adoration of Nancy Drew, but I am obsessed with these four teen sleuths who stiletto around school and say things like “he’s your boyfriend, not a baby squirrel.” I am fascinated by the mysterious city of Rosewood, where your mom can be your teacher and the only after-school activity is looking for clues.

I used to admire the individual styles of each girl: Aria with her pink hair and Free People wardrobe, Hanna’s impressive heel collection, Emily’s enviable tan and Spencer’s tendency to dress like my mom would have wanted me to dress in high school… I guess I really didn’t ever like Spencer’s style repertoire.

Case in point: my mom would love this

Katy Perry’s Future Fashion Aspirations Keeping Her From American Idol?

Posted by    |    July 17th, 2012 at 7:00 am

Katy Perry is white-hot at the moment.  Her new documentary, “Part of Me” is in theaters, her new single “Wide Awake” is topping the charts, and her divorce from Russel Brand is now becoming a distant memory.  So it seems only fitting that as Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez exit American Idol, Perry would be a natural fit.

Katie acted as a guest judge on the show during Season 9, when Simon Cowell was still insulting teen dreams all over the nation.  She knows the drill, she’s delivered the harsh news to hopeful contenders.  So why not return and raise her star quotient as Jennifer Lopez did, right?

Katy Perry: American Idol future?

Wrong. Er, sort-of.  Perry doesn’t dismiss the possibility of her return to American Idol, but doesn’t feel the timing is right.  Mentioning, “I have ideas for two or three big, creative things, and I want to be able to fulfill those ideas, ” rumors have been swirling that her own clothing label or beauty line may be in the works.  It isn’t a far-fetched idea, since her perfume Purr by Katy Perry hit shelves and has done relatively well with young consumers, and her perfume web address is katyperrybeauty.com. (With a web address like that, there is plenty of room to add additional products.)

One can only imagine the colorful, bubble-gummy style that Perry’s fashion might reflect, but the singer seems perfectly happy to continue on with her technicolor persona.  If beauty and fashion are now a fixture on the pop star’s radar, then it looks like Idol won’t be.

Perry may add fashion designer to her list of accomplishments

Fashion Apps You Gotta Have for iPad

Posted by    |    July 9th, 2012 at 2:24 pm

As someone who is a lover of all things tech, I am a huge sucker for cool apps.  My iPad has quickly filled up with some that I have decided I would be totally lost without.  It’s no surprise that a few of these are fashion apps, and perhaps even some you may have already scooped up for yourself. Check out my top fashion apps that I think are worthy of the download.

1. POSE.  Here’s the rundown: it’s free, it’s fun, and it’s chock full of inspiration!  Pose lets you share and discover styles from around the world. You know you already take self-portraits with your iPhone or iPad on those days you look extra cute, so why not share them with the world?  Note-worthy posers are often featured on the Pose blog, which gives your inner-fashionista something to shoot for.

Pose....the app that lets you pose. See?

2. STYLE.COM.  This is one glossy baby, right here.  If high fashion is your thing, you’ll love watching videos of the latest runway shows and fashion parties across the globe.  Where else can you see up-to-date photos of Sofia Coppola’s new outfit at the opening of Louis Vuitton’s Haute Joaillerie store?

3. SHOPSTYLE.  Read this description: “All the stores you love, all in one place. ShopStyle brings together the most fashionable stores and the best designer brands. Shop the latest styles within our clothing, home decor, and kids & baby categories from over 300 of your favorite retailers including ShopBop, Nordstrom, Pottery Barn, Sephora, Net-a-Porter, and more.” Um, yes, yes, yes, yes. Be prepared for restraint with the credit cards.

4. TRENDSTOP.  If you are keeping up with the trends instead of the Kardashians, then you need this app.  You will be up to date on daily fashion trends, styling ideas, and global interests spotted on the runways and in street style. You can also follow up-and-coming designers, art, exhibitions, launches, etc.  Wanna know it before everyone else?  This is how.

How To Get Justin Bieber to Love You…

Posted by    |    July 4th, 2012 at 7:00 am

If you’ve been contemplating this since you first saw the teaser for the Bieb’s “Boyfriend” video, you should turn your attention to the lady who has managed to steal Justin’s heart. Rather than throwing darts at the photo of his lovely lady friend, how about taking some cues from her? Selena Gomez has always been bubble-gum sweet and sassy, but as she leaves her teens and becomes more accessible to her adult fans, she’s found a way to marry style, sex appeal, and girl-next-door freshness. How?  Let’s take a look….

1. Healthy Physique.

Miss Gomez keeps herself at a normal, healthy weight and embraces her natural curves.  She isn’t a twig, and can often be seen indulging in a sweet treat now and then.  Regular exercise and adequate sleep keep her metabolism in check.

2. Natural, easy hair.

On the cover of this month’s Elle magazine, Gomez shows off her beautiful locks.  One thing you’ll consistently notice about her is healthy, shiny, effortless hair.  Once in a while she will go all out for a premiere, but on most days you’ll find her hair down or pulled into a neat pony.  Low maintenance = guy magnet.

3. Not Afraid to Wear Color.

Selena Gomez in Red Dress at Elle July 2012 Cover

Too often, women feel that black is the only color that consistently looks slimming and classy.  Why play it safe when bold colors send a more playful, fun, and empowering message?  Red has been proven time and time again to be a favorite of men the world over, so take a page out of Selena’s playbook and give it a try.

4.  Rock Jeans and T-Shirt.

Not every moment calls for stilettos and Marc Jacobs.  It’s okay to be comfortable!  If you’re going to dress down, throw on a stylish casual handbag and a few simple accessories.  Nothing looks better with a delicate diamond necklace or designer watch than a simple white tee and jeans.

5. Never Underestimate a Smoky Eye and a Little Cleavage.

Again, not an “everyday” look, but when the occasion calls for it, bust out (no pun intended,) the black mini and kohl eyeliner.  A little highlighter on your cheekbones, forehead, and decolletage will give you a fresh, dewy appearance and highlight those sparkling eyes.  Skip the false eyelashes if you’re going to be expecting a goodnight kiss-it can look too spidery up close. Just smudge a black or gray eyeliner above top and below bottom lashes and pile on the mascara!

Who knows if this love affair with Justin Bieber will last, but Miss Gomez has a handle on how to snag a quality guy by balancing glamor with reality. Let’s all do likewise!

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise Divorce: How He Changed Kate

Posted by    |    July 2nd, 2012 at 8:00 am

Most of us aren’t surprised….Hollywood marriages aren’t exactly known for their longevity.  Five years of wedded bliss, one daughter, and the couch jump heard ’round the world later, Miss Kate has jumped ship.  Was it the age difference? Their crazy work schedules? The paparazzi?  Who knows, but this makes the third failed marriage for Tom, and numero uno for Katie Holmes.  I’m starting to wonder if she had a better shot at lasting love with fellow midwestener Chris Klein.

Say what you will about the former Joey Potter from “Dawson’s Creek”, but Katie is a very talented actress who has seemingly crept into the shadows since her marriage to Tom Cruise.

She did some beautiful ads for Ann Taylor (as did fellow celeb divorcee Demi Moore,) and fronted her own fashion line, Holmes and Yang, but her TV and film appearances have been limited.  After all, when “Dawson’s Creek” is what people remember most about you, (other than your famous marriage,) you’ve probably taken on too few projects since the show. Especially with the caliber of talent this girl has, right?

What is undeniable, however, is that marriage to Tom is what made Katie a style star.  She was always fresh and cute, but “cute” doesn’t quite fit the bill of a megastar’s wife.  With one fell swoop, she went from young and fun, to classy and cool.  Instead of friends from the midwest, Kate was sharing dinners with the Beckham’s…and you can’t just show up in Urban Outfitters for dinner with Posh Spice.

From tailored looks and kitten heels to a designer baby, Katie Holmes, take heart.  You may be losing a husband, but you’ve gained a fashion following that has put you on the map for the rest of your life.
