It might seem silly, but do you ever wonder why you buy the things that you do? Is is because you really, truly, deeply love these things, or because it may impress someone else? Do you buy it because it may get your photograph in the local magazines, or because you envision yourself keeping this purchase for years to come? Dallas is a city full of brand-conscious people, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Designer and luxury items are typically the highest quality and universally classic, which is reason enough to make an investment purchase.
How often, though, do we buy those things in excess simply to keep up with the Joneses….only to find that we are sweating it out when unexpected bills arise thanks to our new Chanel?
I guess the lesson here is this: Buy what you love. The key word here is YOU. Not what you think you should have, or what you feel other people expect of you. You can be just as socially acceptable wearing Jason Wu for Target as the couture Jason Wu.
When making a purchase, ask yourself: Do I really love this? Do I need this? Does it make me smile? Do I care about what people will think if I wear this? How much of this purchase is vanity and how much is just plain personal preference?
Keeping these things in mind will help you to stay on track with your budget and your authentic taste. It may not always be designer, or it may be that you have fallen in love with a luxury handbag you can’t resist. Either way, buy it because it fits you, and not some mold or expectation that you’ve created in your mind. (And it’s okay if you pass on the organic gourmet cookies and indulge in Sour Patch kids once in a while, too. Give yourself a break.)
