If You’re Hairy and You Know It….

Posted by    |    March 30th, 2012 at 11:15 am

With summer trying to squeeze into the scene a bit early, it’s time to start thinking about hair removal.  Shorts, short skirts, swimsuits, (and perhaps the occasional jaunt to a nude beach for the brave,) means tactics to de-fuzz ourselves.

The most common ways and where to get this done quickly and (almost) painlessly aren’t rocket science.  Here we go…

Shaving (Duh).  This is the simplest, cheapest, and can be done anywhere, anytime as long as running water is present.  Downside?  Accidentally cutting yourself, razors dull quickly, and hair grows back pretty darn fast. Where to find the materials: Walgreens, Wal-Mart, you get the idea. (more…)

Wardrobe Remix: Dip-Dyed Skirt

Posted by    |    March 29th, 2012 at 2:37 pm

Breathing new life into old clothes is an art form.  Some people have vision for old clothes being new trends that the rest of us just don’t have.  When I stumbled across A Pair & A Spare blog, I realized just how talented some of these remix masters really are.

Read the description of Geneva, the brains behind this super cool blog: A Pair & A Spare is a chronicle of Geneva’s day-to-day addiction to Do It Yourself fashion, where she shows you how to create the most desirable and on-trend fashion and lifestyle projects with minimal skill. Originally from Brisbane, Australia and now living in Hong Kong, Geneva believes in a sustainable approach to fashion and revels in making old new and on-trend using sewing, beading, studding, refashioning and a host of other projects. Proving that DIY Fashion can complement traditional fashion ideals, Geneva also posts a weekly DIY tutorial over at Harper’s BAZAAR Australia.”

Wow, do I feel like an underachiever.  Luckily, Geneva is nice enough to post easy-to-follow tutorials to teach us her crafty ways.  When I saw the gorgeous lilac dip-dyed skirt she created from an old white skirt, I fell madly enough.  Check out these photos and follow her tutorial to create your own. (Isn’t it perfect for Easter?)

Bling On Spring at Bottega Veneta NorthPark Center

Posted by    |    March 28th, 2012 at 11:09 am

Last week, the always chic Bottega Veneta opened its doors at Northpark Center for a private preview shindig to benefit the North Texas Food Bank.  Besides a glittering guest list and sensational sips, what really caught my eye was the amazing collection Bottega Veneta offers for spring and summer this year.  Though this luxury brand has always oozed classic class, this season’s must-haves were eye-catching because they aren’t simply classic colors and styles.  Color, sweet color, has taken over the supple leathers, lightweight fabrics, and to-die-for jewelry.

Oh, and did I mention the downright sensational sunglasses?  With a nod to old Hollywood glamor, I can’t stress enough how much any woman needs a pair of these in her collection. (The Nero Oval is my new passion.)  If you don’t look at anything else in this blog, at least feast your eyes on these little pieces of heaven: (more…)

Nutty for Nutella Fudge Pops

I must have been living under a rock all these years, because I didn’t discover what Nutella was until about 365 days ago.  We didn’t spread it on our toast or coat our fruit in it growing up, so I didn’t know the sweet, sweet goodness of it until I attended the U.S. Open in Flushing, New York.  Instead of the usual artery-clogging concessions, there was a crepe booth.  Crepes!  How could I deny myself a fruit-filled crepe whilst cheering on my dear Federer?  What sealed the deal, however, was the Nutella-filled sweetness that was smeared heavy-handed in my crepe.  I was pretty sure I’d reached nirvana.

If you also love the nutty stuff, I have another fab recipe from Chocolate Covered Katie to satisfy your sweet tooth with a healthy twist.  Enjoy this Nutella Fudge-cicle esque recipe that will help cool you down on the impending hot summer days. (more…)

Spring Break: Break Out The New Styles for Spring

Posted by    |    March 23rd, 2012 at 11:48 am

It’s officially THAT time.  Time to haul your winter stuff to the back of the closet, under the bed, or off to Good Will.  The good news is that when all that is over, you’re left with the light, sweet, summery things that make you feel like planning a beach vacay.  I’m slow to change; especially when the weather can’t make up its mind about whether it should be 50 degrees or 80 degrees.  If you need a little inspiration like me to get your brain jogging on what to wear for spring, I’ve picked a few fav looks that you may already have hiding in your closet.

Of course, adding new pieces to your growing collection in a sure-fire way to get yourself in the mood to patio dine at Bolsa and picnic at the Arboretum, so hit the mall this weekend while you’re at it.

The Swoon Event This Saturday at South Side

Posted by    |    March 21st, 2012 at 9:09 am

So, you’re blissfully in love and tying the knot.  Most brides have a hard time restraining themselves from hours a day on StyleMePretty and attending every wedding-related event that comes to town.  I don’t blame you; I was that girl.  But you don’t have to schlep around to every single wedding event to find the vendors, ideas, and handmade goodies that you really love for your big day.  Your chance to condense all that event-going is coming up this Saturday at South Side on Lamar, and you don’t want to miss it!

Amberly Washington (Sweethead accessories designer and Jr. League Event Coordinator) hosts the Swoon Event, a wedding market and party that the lover of organic, green, handmade and DIY will heart bigtime. The market will feature over 40 local vendors selling handmade wares, a bridal fashion show, a DJ spinning love songs of the ’70s (I can already hear “Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe” by Barry White, baby), food trucks like Easy Slider and Rockstar Bakeshop, and Oak Cliff lovely Oil and Cotton will be on hand doing DIY demonstrations!

This is Dallas, so no event is complete without a fashion show, ya’ll.

Piermarini Boutique Styles The Spring

Posted by    |    March 20th, 2012 at 3:39 pm

Dallas’ favorite fashion entrepreneur and boutique owner, John Piermarini, is officially saying sayonara to his boutique’s winter wardrobe, as he welcomes the most stylish of spring trends! Piermarini Boutique, famed for its’ shopping in your best friends closet experience, will be undergoing its seasonal transformation, from wintery woolens to a sophisticated and lively spring collection.

The women’s wear collection will kick-off the new season with hints of “ocean colors”; sea foam greens & blues that are pale and pair nicely with bolder accents. Piermarini has handpicked a selection of top-notch designers to be sold in the boutique, including an elite collection comprised of women’s wear by Minimarket, Won Hundred, Osklen, Kymerah and Hyden Yoo.

For the gentlemen, he has selected brands such as Won Hundred, Moods of Norway, CREEP and Kai-Aakman, making it possible for even the most fashion challenged men to leave looking suave. Regarding the new men’s collection, Piermarini says, “We are keeping it classy & simple with that extra edge this season.”

DIY: Homemade Organic Body Scrub

Posted by    |    March 20th, 2012 at 7:00 am

With the economy still unstable and gas prices soaring, it makes perfect sense why a trend towards homemade goods has begun.  Not only does this approach save money, but it gives you a sense of satisfaction that if the pioneer women could do it, so can you.  Today’s beauty DIY comes from a fun holistic blog called Keeper of the Home.  The DIY recipes and tips are a refreshing look at living as a natural homemaker, instead of some weird hippie freak that only eats plants and sews their own underwear.  (Okay, I may have made that last part up.  But the stuff about living as a natural homemaker is all true.)

Body scrubs are wildly popular because they exfoliate well, smell delicious, and keep that hot bod of yours moisturized.  Here is a Keeper of the Home recipe for a body scrub you can make with the contents of your kitchen.

Body Scrub: Brown Sugar, Honey and Organic Extra-Virgin Olive Oil

1-1/2 cups Brown Sugar
1/2 cup Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1/8 cup local, raw Honey
1/4 teaspoon of desired scent options: Homemade Pure Vanilla Extract, Lemon Juice, Lavender essential oil, Fresh ground coffee, Cinnamon or Clove

In a large bowl, mix all ingredients together to form a paste. Add scent if you would like to, but it is not necessary. Store body scrub in a sealed container in your shower or by the sink. No need to refrigerate. To use, scoop some into the palm of your hand and massage skin as needed.

The author even insists that she didn’t have to moisturize after shaving this worked so well!  Make your own and enjoy the lasting benefits of a great scrub coupled with all-natural ingredients.

A Hilton in the House This Friday

Posted by    |    March 19th, 2012 at 10:30 am

Nope, it ain’t Paris.  It isn’t (slightly reclusive) Nicky Hilton.  It’s the lady who spawned both aforementioned socialites, Kathy Hilton.  Making a personal appearance at Saks Fifth Avenue at the Galleria Dallas, Mrs. Hilton will be showing off her Spring 2012 dress collection. According to Kathy, ““My collection will allow women searching for a glamorous ‘special occasion’ dress, long, short or in-between, to find something unique for their lifestyles, without breaking the bank. I have always wanted to reach these women, and with this Collection, I believe we have.”
From the photos of Kathy’s private collection viewing party, I have to say that these dresses look sweet and feminine, and perfectly tailored for a cocktail party or special event. You can get a quick looks of the designs here.
Even if you aren’t a Hilton fan, take note that wine will be served, so there is even more incentive to trot into Saks. But if you ARE a Hilton fan, Kathy is going to be giving autographs and taking photos, so get ready to tweet that Instagram photo of you and the Hilton Grande Dame. Side note: I interviewed Kathy Hilton and her husband a few years back, and they were polite, friendly, and obviously very savvy. Here’s hoping this dress collection is also “money in the bank”.
