Spring Style Is On My Brain….

Posted by    |    January 31st, 2012 at 11:38 am

It’s been an unseasonably warm winter all over the country, so naturally spring is on the brain.  Every time I pass a J. Crew with those bold, juicy colors I get a little giddy inside.  Who wouldn’t?  Bold colors, nude makeup, and a healthy dose of Vitamin D from the impending sunshine are on the horizon, people!  If you aren’t quite there yet, I have a few things to inspire you to go bathe yourself in color.

What should you keep your eyes peeled for this spring?

1. Bold blazers. I’m talkin’ hot pink, lavender, bright yellow, orange, chartreuse, you name it. Throw on a white t-shirt or cami underneath and pair it with jeans, a skirt, or shorts.  Done!

2. Blinged-out friendship bracelets.  Remember friendship bracelets from summer camp?  They are back in a big way, but this time they brought their friends Rhinestone and Crystal with them.  Make your own (courtesy of More Design Please,) or buy ’em here.

3. Nude cosmetics.  Too many bright colors on one palette can be overwhelming, so pair your bold outfit with muted eyes, lips, and nails.  Simple, chic, and will make you look years younger. (Unless you’re already 12 or something, in which case you should probably take off that make-up, young lady.)

Create the Perfect Valentine’s Day Card From Your Phone

Posted by    |    January 30th, 2012 at 2:05 pm

In this crazy fast digital age, things have to be mobile in order to be crossed off the to-do list.  Gone are the days of handwriting each little Valentine’s Day card to be placed into a decorated shoe box; now we e-card each other for any and every occasion.  Didn’t know you could send your sweetheart a personalized card via cell?  Prepare to be enlightened.

“We’ve seen such a large percentage of photos being uploaded from mobile phones. Like many of our products, we are looking to adapt to the trend. Users can create magnificent Valentine’s Day cards from their cell phone photos, without worrying about the picture quality,” says Rahnel Romasanta, Senior Manager of Design and Merchandising for KODAK Gallery. This is the first time KODAK Gallery has utilized square boxed collage photo layouts that’s easier for social networking photos and mobile phone photos. With these designs spreading across photos books, cards, notebooks, and Wall Art, Valentine’s Day shoppers will find the perfect gift set for that special someone in their life.

If you think you’re too cool for V-day, think again. According to the US Census Bureau, 180 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine’s Day the second-most popular greeting-card-giving occasion behind Christmas. Kodak decided to capitalize on this by offering distinct styles so you can find a sentiment that fits your style (or the style of your beloved).

KODAK Gallery’s Love Flourish design is a great take on Sophisticated Script. With these designs spreading across everything from notepads, to mugs, and dozens of gifts, users will be able to create complete gift sets in no time.

KODAK Gallery’s Modern Love Valentine’s Day card designs are simple and clean with fresh and clean white backgrounds with Iconic Hearts. The design is a cool and funky take on the traditional collage layout. With these cards, the square photo-holes and smaller size work great with the customer’s FACEBOOK and mobile photos.

So, it’s official.  You have NO excuse for forgetting to send a Valentine this year.  If you have a phone, you have a way.

Bohemian Decor: You Can Do It

Posted by    |    January 27th, 2012 at 7:00 am

If there’s one thing that has gained popularity since the 1970’s, it’s a love for all things bohemian.   Anthropologie didn’t catch on like wildfire for no reason, right?  One of the greatest things about this overall theme is that it’s easy, it’s fun, and it means things don’t have to match.  In fact, matchy-matchy is so 2011.  If you’re considering a change in your interiors, perhaps you should consider a bohemian vibe.  It’s one part vintage, one part color, and one part whimsy.

It can work n any of your spaces.  If going full-out gypsy style isn’t your thing, try adding a few beaded, patterned, or brightly colored pillows to your neutral couch or bedding.  A funky lamp is always a good choice, as well as quirky knick-knacks in the shape of owls, human busts, or Indian-style lanterns. Once you add a few colorful pieces to your nest, you’ll feel your mood start to change.  “Perhaps I’ll try my hand at painting this year”, you think.  Or maybe you’ll start a book club once a week (and it’s okay if you start with Nicolas Sparks instead of “The Hunger Games“.) You might not realize where the new surge of inspiration is coming from, but your pillows and I will know.

Top Model’s Personal Style

Posted by    |    January 26th, 2012 at 8:00 am

Models are usually seen and not heard. (Which sometimes isn’t a bad thing…remember teen model Miss South Carolina?)

It’s a nice change of pace, however, to see a video where models talk about their personal style and we can see firsthand what they wear when they aren’t rocking haute couture and ready-to-wear.  Are they as chic on the street as they are on the catwalk?  Decide for yourself.

The Easiest Way to Update Your Wardrobe

Posted by    |    January 25th, 2012 at 2:49 pm

We live in a world of divas gone digital, with 22% of women shopping online at least once a day.  Once a day!  Even in a struggling economy, we love to shop.  According to the Luxury Market Report, “Research has shown that women are stressed, have little time to shop, and would generally like help in determining the right clothes and styles to wear. With over 61 million U.S. women between the ages of 25-54 spending over $34 billion in apparel each year, there are sure to be some mistakes made in clothing choices.”  With these two facts in mind, it makes sense that women want instant purchases that save them time and money, but will get the most for their dollar.

Here is where it gets tricky: what can a woman buy that will add value to her wardrobe and stay fresh for the long haul?  You don’t want to skew too trendy, and you don’t want to be too conservative and boring, so what is the best buy for your buck?  The answer is: a belt.

Yep, a belt.  Want to know why?  A belt can come in any color, fabric, style, shape, size, and be laden with ornamentation or nothing at all.  Unlike shoes that can show wear very quickly, a belt usually maintains its shape and luster for a long period of time.  And, it can literally change the look of an outfit.

Check out the inspiration gallery below for fun belt-based looks.  Whether the look is your favorite pair of worn out jeans or your wedding gown, a belt can make the outfit shine.

Stylish Cell Phone Holder From Lotion Bottle

Posted by    |    January 24th, 2012 at 7:00 am

It all started with tracing our hands like turkeys for Thanksgiving and gluing on wildly beautiful feathers. The heavy realization dawned on me and I’ve never been able to shake it since; I stink at crafts.  Not just an “Oh, I accidentally left a sandwich out overnight” stink, but an over-the-top “Something must have gotten stuck in the wall and died” stink.  It’s true.  Try as I might to get crafty, I usually fail miserably.  So why did this cool cellphone craft jump out at me?  Because Momma didn’t raise a quitter.

Who among us hasn’t wished our cellphone wasn’t laying around on the floor haphazardly while it’s charging?  Well, MakeIt-LoveIt has a solution that is as clever as it is cute.

This ingenious idea came from a used baby lotion bottle turned cellphone holder…all with scissors, Modge Podge, and some fabric.  How easy is that?

You know you want to try it.  It takes no time at all and your cellphone won’t be exposed to the harshness of the floor, the curiosity of the cat, or worse…the smooshing of a shoe.   Find the entire tutorial here.

1st Annual Dallas Modern Home Tour This Saturday

Posted by    |    January 23rd, 2012 at 7:00 am

When I heard about the 1st Annual Dallas Modern Home Tour, I was more than giddy with excitement for two reasons:

1. I love home tours. (Who doesn’t?)

2. The curator of the fabulous homes on the tour is Ingrid Spencer, who served as managing editor of the Award-winning magazine Architectural Record for five years. She is now a contributing editor to that magazine, and a wealth of knowledge about all things home.

When can you see this amazing work?  On Saturday, January 28, 2012, nearly ten architecturally progressive and contemporary homes in central Dallas will open their doors from 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM. The self-guided driving tour will feature innovative homes that exemplify modern living, addressing issues from sustainability to ergonomics.

As if being a part of the very first Dallas Modern Home Tour isn’t thrilling enough, I had the opportunity to interview Ingrid Spencer about the tour and how it can literally change your life. (more…)

Getting to Know Elizabeth Ann’s Recipe Box

Posted by    |    January 19th, 2012 at 7:00 am

If you’re a foodie or someone who enjoys a spin in the kitchen now and again,  you’re going to thank me profusely (in your mind) for introducing you to Elizabeth Ann’s Recipe Box.

Elizabeth Ann is a blogger who wanted an easier way to share her passion with friends and family.  Thus, her wildly popular food blog was born, and has been slowly nudging scores of wannabe bakers in the kitchen ever since.  From her scrumptious Cinnamon Roll Coffee Cake to her King Ranch Casserole, this charming chef has some down home, tried and true recipes that will keep you salivating.  Her blog feels more like opening a family heirloom cookbook than reading a webpage; it’s akin to your bestie divulging top secret recipes.  After reading her blog for several months, I had to know more about Elizabeth Ann and how she began her jaunt into the blogosphere.

YouPlusDallas: When did you begin blogging?
I began blogging in June of 2009 because I was tired of emailing recipes to friends. I decided to begin posting my favorite recipes on a blog. This simple recipe blog has grown to so much more since then.

What has the response been to your recipes?
The recipes on Elizabeth Ann’s Recipe Box have been approved by my husband, who is just a steak and potatoes, small town cowboy. Basically if he likes a recipe, everyone will! Since I have made all the recipes on my blog and they have all been tested by Nate and multiple other people, I know that they are delicious and will be a big hit. Because of the steps I go through before posting a recipe, visitors to my blog meet each recipe with success. (more…)
