Home for New Year’s Eve? Bake White Chicken Enchiladas.

Posted by    |    December 30th, 2011 at 8:28 am

So many people are opting for a low-key New Year’s Eve at home, but that doesn’t mean a good, celebratory meal shouldn’t be a part of the evening.  Of course, no one wants to spend the entire holiday night baking, so a simple, filling recipe is the way to go.  To get your tummy primed and ready for some bubbly, try these delicious White Chicken Enchiladas.

Courtesy of the foodie blog “Joyful Momma’s Kitchen“, here are the necessary steps to food heaven:
Chicken enchiladas with green chili sour cream sauce
  • 10 soft taco shells
  • 2 cups cooked, shredded chicken
  • 2 cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • 3 Tbsp. butter
  • 3 Tbsp. flour
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 (4 oz) can diced green chillies
1.  Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Grease a 9×13 pan
2. Mix chicken and 1 cup cheese.  Roll up in tortillas and place in pan.
3. In a sauce pan, melt butter, stir in flour and cook 1 minute.  Add broth and whisk until smooth.  Heat over medium heat until thick and bubbly.
4. Stir in sour cream and chilies.  Do not bring to boil, you don’t want curdled sour cream.
5. Pour over enchiladas and top with remaining cheese.
6. Bake 22 min and then under high broil for 3 min to brown the cheese.
Happy New Year, everyone!

iChic: iPhone Accessories with Style

Posted by    |    December 29th, 2011 at 9:31 am

In case you received a brand spankin’ new iPhone or iPad this holiday, you may want to protect your new gadget from a cracked screen.  (As I have managed to do twice now, thank you very much.) Rather than carry the run of the mill gadget protector, how about investing in something eye-catching and downright chic?

Here’s a few examples of what I mean.  Drool away!

The personalized trellis designed iPhone cover is $55 and comes in a variety of monograms and colors.  This makes a great gift as well.  Check out your options at the Dani Notes Stationary Store on Etsy. (more…)

New Year’s Eve Style-No Matter What Your Plans Are

Posted by    |    December 28th, 2011 at 11:53 am

It’s upon us once again….as if having a date isn’t enough pressure, looking hot on New Year’s Eve is also paramount.  Luckily, it’s a night where you can throw on anything sparkly and it won’t be considered “too much”, which gives you many fun options.  (Unlike finding a date.)

A few ideas for NYE glam:

A sequin sweater, cardigan, or tank makes a dressy statement, but allows you to keep your bottom half causal and comfortable.  Warm tights or leggings in a neutral color are probably already in your closet, so splurge on a fun sequin top and metallic shoes to match.  (I suggest metallic flats or wedges if you’re going to be standing all night long.) This a a fabulous look for a nice dinner, dancing, or house party.

If you’re headed somewhere a bit more dressed up, you can’t lose with a metallic dress that doesn’t reveal too much, but packs punch with the shine.  Gold and silver are always safe choices that give you lots of options to create a glow with your makeup. (more…)

It’s about that time, ladies and gentlemen…so there will be a brief intermission for the holiday while those of us here at YouPlusDallas spend time with our loved ones and celebrate the reason for the season.  I don’t want to leave you for a few days without spreading some Christmas cheer, so here are some beautiful Christmas tree gallery photos for your enjoyment and inspiration for next year.

Oh, and a clip to make you smile.

Have a very Merry Christmas, and I’ll be back once the guy in the red suit pays a visit to my chimney!

Men’s Fashion: How to Dress For Winter

When the weather turns colder, men have to retire their shorts and flip-flop combos and head into sweater territory.  Truth be told, many men just don’t have a clue what wardrobe staples they need for winter to look stylish, warm, and also like they aren’t trying too hard.  There are a few essentials that every man needs in his closet to make it through the colder months that can be accessorized with other items to create a fuller wardrobe.  Not only will these warm looks keep a body toasty, but it will keep all eyes on it as well. Read on below for what to buy, and a few inspiration photos on how to put it all together.

Must-Haves for the Winter Wardrobe:

1. Blazer (preferably with elbow patches-preppy and sexy at the same time)

Secrets Revealed: Gorgeous Hair

Posted by    |    December 21st, 2011 at 11:11 am

I thought it might be fun to get the scoop from locals on their beauty secret and how we can all benefit from it.  Rather than approach total strangers on the street and start asking away about their secrets, I thought I would start with someone in the throes of the You Plus Dallas offices whom I admire.  Her name is Sarah Beauregard, and she’s the most stylish “Manager of Everything” that the world has ever seen.  (She’s also the author of the super fun Kittens and Pitbulls blog, which you should add to your blogroll.)

Sarah has gorgeous hair, and I have been wanting to know how she gets it to look  fab every single day, so I used this as my opportunity to interrogate her….but for the benefit of all readers, of course.

How To Wear Yellow in the Wintertime

Posted by    |    December 20th, 2011 at 9:41 am

It’s all things sunny and bright, and yet we seem to reserve it mainly for the spring and summer, instead of when we need it most: the dreary wintertime.  Yellow can lift your spirits just by looking at it, so why not find a way to wear it during the coldest months of the year?

Here are a few tips when venturing into sunshine territory with your wardrobe:

  • Yellow looks best in the winter with darker color combinations.  Yellow looks stunning with navy, darker neutrals, and black (if it’s the right shade of yellow-you don’t want to be a bumble bee).  Dark denim and yellow are smashing together, and a yellow skirt or dress are an unexpected pop of color this time of year.
  • Avoid yellow tights unless you want your legs to look jaundiced.  Some people can pull this look off, but not many.
  • Yellow accessories are a great way to get noticed. I saw a shocking yellow scarf at Forever 21 yesterday, and it took everything in me not to buy it and wear it with my distressed denim shirt.  Yellow earrings and necklaces add a fun touch to any outfit, and yellow Hunter boots are worth the investment. A yellow coat may be a bit much for most, but it can be a fun sussie to treat yourself to.

Now that you have a few guidelines to follow, how about some pics for inspiration?

Simple Homemade Christmas

Posted by    |    December 14th, 2011 at 5:24 pm

Today’s post is one of inspiration.  Sometimes I see pictures in magazines of people’s homes decorated for the holidays and I feel inadequate.  My tree doesn’t have a theme; in fact, the ornaments are a mish-mash of ornaments people have been giving me since my sorority days.  (Said ornaments include a sparkly pickle, a strawberry for ZTA, a one-armed Santa and Barbie, of course.)  My nativity scene isn’t a fancy version and Mary has been glued back together twice.  So when Better Homes and Gardens shows holiday homes that are simply too good to be true, it can seem like an impossible task to measure up.

Then I see treats like this.  Totally homemade and beautiful.  Simple is oftentimes all we need to remember the reason we celebrate Christmas in the first place.  After all, what is more simple than birth in a barn?

The incredible French Larkspur shop sells these aqua green vintage German beer bottles (a set of 3 are $48,), and they make a gorgeous holiday display.  Add twigs, flowers, berries…anything, really.  The tags read “peace”, “love” and “joy”-all the qualities of the season.

It’s the little things in life that can make the biggest impact.  Check out French Larkspur for more homemade holiday inspiration, and additional photo beauty like this….

Hilary Kennedy Gift Pick: Test Tube Beauty

Posted by    |    December 13th, 2011 at 10:32 am

sample products included in the TestTube

This gift pick is the gift that keeps on giving the whole year through.  It isn’t something cool I read about or someone paid me to blog about-this is actually a program that a good friend has tried and loves, so she has me totally in love with the idea of doing this, too.

Test Tube Beauty is a subscription to try the latest and best products four times per year in conjunction with New Beauty magazine. According to their website, “Subscribers receive four different exciting boxes filled with deluxe samples of the latest and best beauty products. The value of the samples you’ll receive will always significantly exceed the subscription price. You will be charged $29.95 (plus $8.95 for shipping and handling) as each new TestTube™ is sent to you. ” The shipping price makes sense, because the boxes are usually pretty hefty and include a New Beauty magazine. (Those magazines weigh a ton on their own.) The box even includes tips on how to use the products.

Once your box of goodies arrives, you can go to their website to give your two cents on the products they’ve sent you.  Oh, and if the goodies aren’t up to snuff, you can cancel your subscription at any time.
From what I’ve seen online, the test tube for this fall included deluxe samples of Moroccan Oil, Be Fine toner, Ahava Day Cream….all nice luxury products.
I love getting deliveries in the mail, so this concept with Test Tube Beauty is a fun way to try new surprise products every quarter, some of which are full-size!
