What to Wear to Thanksgiving Dinner

There is exactly one and a half shopping days left until Thanksgiving. Though it isn’t known as the holiday of extreme style, what you wear to Thanksgiving can be crucial in several instances.
1. You are meeting your significant other’s family for the first time.
2. You haven’t seen your own (or extended) family in a long time.
3. You’re eating out at a swanky restaurant for Thanksgiving.
4. You’re invited to a football watching party for the holiday.
5. You’re hitting up the Black Friday sales after dinner that are now starting on Thursday night and need something that will pull double-duty.
Depending on how formal your family or the location of your meal is, you can probably get away with something that is equally comfortable and cute. Resist the urge to throw on pants with an elastic waist and oversized sweatshirt…neither will make you feel attractive and they only encourage over-indulging. (Trust me. Remember Joey’s Thanksgiving Pants on that episode of “Friends”?)
Here are a few ideas for pulled-together looks for the holiday that aren’t too sexy and aren’t too frumpy.
Let’s start with these looks from Polyvore.com
. It couldn’t be any easier than animal print flats
, jeans, and a gray sweater
. Add a coral scarf and handbag
, a few pieces of coordinating jewelry and…ta da! Thanksgiving appropriate and cozy to boot.
If you’re eating out somewhere nice, black pants
are the tried and true staple to start with. Add a patterned top with short sleeves in case they have the heat cranked on high, but include a black blazer or dinner jacket
(love the ruffle detailing!) in case they don’t. A pop of color on your feet, belt, and on your handbag keep this look from being dull, and with the addition of sparkling bangles…you’re all set.
If you’ll be doing some early Christmas shopping after the Thanksgiving meal, you’ll want to put on something comfy and cute to survive the stampede. Black leggings
are the ultimate in comfort, and flat boots
will save your feet. Throw on a loose jersey-knit top in a bright holiday color
, a neutral scarf, simple gold jewelry and a purse big enough to carry the circulars with holiday coupons on your trek.
And, in case you’re meeting the parents or extended family of your sweetie this holiday, err on the side of chic and simple. Navy and white stripes
with jeans are always a safe bet, but add a brightly colored sweater
in a sunny color to keep you warm and sending out signals of cheerfulness. A simple black shoe and satchel
should show you aren’t high maintenance, but you rock some great accessories. Keep nails neutral and pretty
, so when you’re reaching for that basket of dinner rolls, all they notice is your sweet smile.
