Earning Your Stripes

Posted by    |    July 29th, 2011 at 2:48 pm

Stripes are most commonly found in nautical looks or pin stripes on a dapper men’s shirt, but they could not be contained in apparel for long.  First making a splash with decorative pillows, stripes have become both trendy and classic.  Oh sure, striped bedding has existed and there have been striped drapes hanging from windows since long before shag carpeting, but the striped wall and mix of striped patterns is a somewhat new phenomenon, and it’s gorgeous.

The look of this room from Sarah Richardson Design is the perfect balance of striped walls, chairs, and pillows combined with a soft, neutral pallette.  The ivory and beige basics keep the stripes from giving you a headache and make the room have a less trendy feel.  This room is beguiling for a number of reasons, but the mix of modern lines and classic styles with small pops of color (love those books on the shelf!) make it feel like a warm mug of cocoa on a cold day.  Try painting your bedroom walls with subtle stripes for a dressed up effect, or if that’s too hotel-esque for you, give your powder bath a coat of the lovely lines.  The powder bath is one place you can’t play it too safe.

What do you get when two talented people in the fashion world join forces for the betterment of women everywhere? Happy ladies, let me tell you!

Abi Ferrin and John Piermarini have come out with a new line called Abi & John for basic tanks and dresses that are sold in John’s Uptown Dallas Boutique. The two saw a deficit in the marketplace of wearable, age appropriate slip dresses, so they teamed up to solve this harrowing problem. These soft basics are a must have for every woman’s wardrobe, regardless of your age or style.

The talented 20-year-old John Piermarini opened Piermarini Boutique to showcase labels and designers you won’t see anywhere else in town. These comfortable necessities found at Piermarini Boutique are for any woman’s wardrobe, they even give a little needed stretch! Can I get an Amen? With the many styles of tops and dresses nowadays that have such sheer fabric, the ladies are left out to dry when it comes to what goes UNDER these clothes. Thank you, Abi and John, for thinking of us, and making anything wearable!

If it were up to me, I would dress like Serena van der Woodsen every day. But unfortunately I am neither an NYC socialite nor a fictional character. So maybe I won’t be able to rock the latest trends from top designers every day, but thanks to Rent The Runway, I can occasionally rent my way towards emulating Miss van der Woodsen and her long, blonde locks.

Rent The Runway is a brilliant tool that allows you to rent your dream wardrobe at 90% off retail prices. You can rent everything from cocktail to black tie, floor-length to mini, and you can now rent purses and jewelry. No shoes though, this isn’t a bowling alley (ew).

Put Your Best Face Forward with Clarisonic

Posted by    |    July 13th, 2011 at 8:47 pm

Your skin is a beautiful thing, and you want to keep it a beautiful thing. We’ve all been guilty of it (I know I have), we go to bed with our makeup on or simply glob on some nightly cream before passing out, but the first and most important step to any nightly ritual should always be cleansing. As a devoted user for almost a year, I can honestly say nothing cleanses skin better than the Clarisonic.

At the risk of sounding like an ad for a vacuum cleaner, let me first start by saying that yes, the Clarisonic is affective at cleaning but it’s also incredibly chic. I have the Mia (the little guy) in turquoise and it has quickly moved up the ranks as one of my most cherished possessions. It looks cool sitting on my vanity and it really, truly works.

Although swim suit season has already approached, it’s never too late to get in tiptop shape!  Due to Dallas’s unrelenting heat, you will be able to show off your svelte figures for the next couple of months.

One exercise trend that has swept across not only Dallas but across the nation is Bar classes. Bar classes are a challenging blend of weight training, pilates, and exercises on the ballet bar. Many who have experienced a bar class describe it as ballet with a modern twist to reshaping your whole body.  This workout is perfect for the girl (or guy!) who enjoys an equal blend of cardio and strength training.  Bar classes burn, sculpt, stretch, and tone all areas of your body, specifically the core.  Bar classes are available at Bar Method on Lovers Lane and also Pure Barre located on Greenville.

Ojo Caliente: Hot Springs for Mind, Body, and Soul

Posted by    |    July 12th, 2011 at 1:23 am

If the stress of everyday living is starting to weigh you down, it may be time to do something about it. Sure, the occasional massage or jet-tub bath are wonderful, but sometimes you need something extra to pamper yourself and feel refreshed again.  But, if you’re like most people during these economic times, you don’t a fortune to spend on healing your aching muscles and spinning head.  One way to ease into a state of total relaxation starts with a road trip…to Ojo Caliente, New Mexico.  Yes, it’s a bit of a drive, but once you get sight of the jagged cliffs and mesas sitting stoically in the middle of the desert, you’ll realize why it’s worth the drive.

Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort and Spa, an hour west of Taos, is literally an oasis of water in the dry desert.  With sulphur-free, geothermal mineral waters that “have flowed from a subterranean volcanic aquifer for thousands of years”, Ojo is the only hot springs in the world with four different types of mineral water.  With temperatures ranging from  80-109 degrees, you can choose from pools of soda, iron, arsenic, lithia, and the mud pool.  The entire springs and spa is ruled a “whisper only” zone, so it’s peaceful, relaxing, and serene.  These mineral waters are lauded for their healing properties over generations, curing ailments like depression, poor digestion, blood issues, low immune system, stomach ulcers, skin conditions, and more.  Open from 8 am to 10 pm daily, you can soak your troubles away as you float in the waters that are surrounded by beautiful cliff walls.

Though locals pay a small entry fee to the springs, you can stay at the resort for access to the springs and the wide array of spa services.  Rooms in the historic hotel start as little as $139, and private cliffside suites and cottages give guests access to all the resort has to offer, including the plush robes worn by everyone, everywhere.  Don’t expect the rooms to be fancy or decked out in the latest technology; no televisions, computers, or steroes are to be found.  There is WIFI available in the lobby and common areas, but guests come to Ojo to get away from the constant buzzing of PDA’s.  The Artesian Restaurant and Bar on site has delicious, organic food that tastes even better than it looks.  Make a reservation when you check in be able to get a beautiful table by the window to look out over the sunset on the cliffs.  (The enchiladas are heavenly if you can’t decide on what to order.  Likewise, the caramel tart is a sure thing. Best part? The food isn’t too pricey and the portions are perfect.)

If you have a few extra bucks to spend on treating yourself while at Ojo, the spa services are incredible.  On the low end of the spectrum, an traditional Ojo Private Ritual Herbal Bath and Milagro Relaxation Wrap Combo, which lasts 50 minutes, is a mere $40.  The Native American Blue Corn and Prickly Pear Salt Scrub ($85) strips away dead skin and rids the body of impurities.  It even boasts metabolism improvement! If you’ve never experienced a Dry Body Brush Massage ($39), it stimulates your lymphatic and circulatory system, but above all, it feels out-of-this-world wonderful.

Ojo Caliente may be in the middle of “nowhere”, but that’s definitely the natural beauty of it.  Perfect for a romantic getaway (you can reserve a private mineral pool with your sweetie,) ideal for a Bachelorette weekend, or just precious time to yourself, this is an affordable and luxurious way to de-stress in no time at all.
