My Brazilian Blowout Experience at Blanc Salon

Posted by    |    January 31st, 2011 at 4:49 pm

I have always envied stars like Jennifer Aniston and Halle Berry who look like they’ve never experienced a bad hair day.  As someone with a lot of hair and no skills at making it look beautiful myself, I decided to try the mysterious Brazilian Blowout at Blanc salon in Uptown.  When I first came to check the place out, I met owners Dien Khieu and Scott Tuan Witmer.  Not only are they the most personable salon owners I’ve ever met, but also you can tell from their  fantastic hair that they know how to make clients look amazing.  Besides the friendly staff, the salon itself is bright, sleek, and reminds me of the stylish New York salons you pass on Fifth Avenue. (Not to mention Blanc carries product lines that are world famous and not available in many salons in Texas….bonus!) Stylists Monica Lily and Henry Uldall gave me an overview of the salon and I found out that Blanc has a serious list of celeb and socialite clientele, all of whom have hair I have only dreamed of. I knew I was in for something good.

After being greeted with those friendly faces and a beverage, I headed back to the shampoo bowl with Dien.  He gave me a thorough wash and towel dry, and went to work applying the Brazilian Blowout solution.  I learned a lot about this service from him: Blanc is a Brazilian Blowout certified salon (so they know this process inside and out,) and it isn’t damaging to the hair.  The results leave you with sleek, shiny, and silky hair…. and no frizz!  In a humid city like Dallas, having a head without a million flyaways is nothing short of a miracle. Another added benefit is that this service cuts drying and styling time in half. And the best part?  The results of the Brazilian last 3-4 months!  I couldn’t believe the dramatic transformation, and almost a week later, I couldn’t be happier with the outcome.

While having the service done, I couldn’t help but see how busy the salon is: SMU girls, moms, dads, young professionals, you name it.  Apparently the word is out that Blanc isn’t just a salon for the hip and trendy-it’s for anyone who wants incredible looking hair.  And thanks to them, now I love mine.

P.S. For those of you who become a fan of our fashion/style channel, you can receive special offers that are exclusive to You Plus Dallas members. Blanc Salon has one for you, and you don’t want to miss out on it!

Britney Spears Is a Slave For Sears

Posted by    |    January 25th, 2011 at 4:56 pm

Love her or hate her, Britney Spears won’t let you forget her.  Her brand-spanking new single, Hold it Against Me  hit at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and broke the iTunes record for most downloaded female artist in one short week. And, whether she’s walking a red carpet or walking barefoot to a gas station bathroom, she is a star “for the people”.  She’s always rocked her own style, from a glam, studio-era look to her Uggs/tee-shirt/torn denim skirt look.  And now, ladies, you can also have a bit of Spears style and stay within your budget.  Brit is collaborating with BCBG to launch a clothing line for Sears, aptly named “Spears for Sears”.  Though specifics are scarce, the collection will feature casual, on-trend attire.  If you secretly sing “Oops, I Did It Again” to yourself in the mirror and find yourself attracted to perpetual bad boys, perhaps this line will help you embrace your inner Brit-Brit.

Project Askari: Getting to Know Sweet Shirin

Posted by    |    January 20th, 2011 at 10:21 pm

Originally from Richardson, Shirin Askari won the hearts of Project Runway devotees in Season 6, solidifying her as a talented fashion designer and Dallas celeb. Debuting her collection almost a year ago right here in Big D, the young designer’s fashions were warmly recieved. Pocketbooks opened, and so did more doors to expanding the line futher.  Shirin was asked to create four designs incorporating Red Bull cans to showcase at Red Bull: Art of Can, and her trunk shows at local favorites like Elements had women rejoicing.  I asked the gracious designer a few questions to get a glimpse of her inspirations, her likes and dislikes, and of course, the celeb she would like to dress.

Shirin, when did you realize you wanted to become a fashion designer?
When I was highschool… about the time when everyone starts asking you what you want to do with the rest of your life. I had been making my own clothes for a long time but I just did it for fun, I didn’t think it was something I could do as a career.

In case someone was living under a rock and missed Project Runway Season 6, tell us: what are some of your accomplishments as a designer?
I think just being able to be a fashion designer in this time and economy is an accomplishment on its own. Getting into my first store or doing my first market was also pretty rewarding.

Whom do you consider a favorite designer?
My favorite designer right now is actually a shoe designer.. Nicholas Kirkwood’s shoes are pieces of art.

Where can readers buy your clothes/jewelry?
They can buy it at stores such as Elements, Melanie Gayle, Betty Reiter, Fashion of Ruston, Sylvias or they can contact me through my website and order!

What was the very first designer piece you ever purchased for yourself?
I love vintage.. so one of the first designer pieces I bought was a vintage Christian Dior sweater.

We all have one….what is your trashiest television indulgence?
I hate to say it but… Gossip Girl!

Name the worst thing in your closet that you just can’t give up.
The oompa loompa costume I made.

What do you believe makes a quality article of clothing?
Fabric and construction methods.

When you’re done working and it’s time to eat, where is your favorite place to go in Dallas?
I have a bad sweet tooth so….Yumilicious or Paciugo.

What matters to you most as a fashion designer?
Being about to give back.. I’ve started to donate a percentage of my sales to Scottish Rite Hospital.

What is your ritual to prepare right before a fashion shoot or show?
Before a show there is SO much to prepare. Fittings, alterations, styling…  I would like to say I go to a spa or get a manicure but thats just not the case.

When it’s time for romance, what would you consider your ideal date?
There are so many “ideal” romantic dates I can think of… dinner and dancing or even staying in and playing boardgames can be romantic.

You have $500 to spend on anything you’d like.  What do you buy?
A plane ticket… I love to travel.

Who would you rather dress: Angelina Jolie or Natalie Portman?
Natalie Portman… because someone needs to pick that flower off her chest.

To see the new 2011 Spring/Summer collection, go to Shirin’s website.  My recommendation?  Don’t wait; her clothes are heating things up in Dallas and winter will be over before you know it.

A beautiful highrise.  A beautiful group of party-goers. A beautiful showing of fashion designer Abi Ferrin’s latest designs.  Last Thursday night was just beautiful.  The Superbowl Kickoff party was hosted at the Azure in Uptown, with some of the members of the NFL Players’ Wives Association, “Off the Field, ” modeling Abi Ferrin’s latest and greatest. With the nicest PR queen in town, Sabra Girard, at the helm and hor dourves by the talented Lisa Garza, this event not only showcased great local fashion but also benefitted St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. And for the creme de la creme:  two days before Super Bowl XLV explodes at Cowboys Stadium, Off The Field, the NFL Players’ Wives Association — will hold its 10th Annual Awards Banquet and Fashion Show benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Abi Ferrin will impress once again as the 2011 featured designer and the event will be co-hosted by Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith’s wife, Pat Smith, and Amy Vanderoef. Keeping Up With The Crum-An Interview with PlanB PR Founder, Bri Crum

Posted by    |    January 11th, 2011 at 8:10 pm

Fashion wouldn’t be what it is without the driving forces behind it in our city.  The best way to develop personal style is to study the style of those whom you admire.  So, I asked Bri Crum of Plan B PR to help connect me to her bevy of fashion forward friends and clients so we may all benefit from their collective wisdom. A style icon in her own right (and daughter-in-law to one of the most glamorous women in town, Yvonne Crum,) Bri has fulfilled her entrepreneurial dream by founding PLAN B PR, a boutique PR Firm that helps brands and individuals become a part of lifestyle and pop culture through creative, innovative and effective PR, events and sports/entertainment marketing. She built relationships with top companies and professional athletes in the action sports industry, and also worked as a sales consultant for a fashion designer for 7 years. Bri’s background is also in event planning as she owned her own event planning business, Divine Celebrations and was F2 President for the non-profit organization The Fashionistas. Bri was project manager of many events including NBA All-Star Legends party, Shirin Askari Fashion Show, Fashion’s Night Out with Barney’s New York and the Sergey Ermakov Fashion Show ‘Designing with a Vision’ to name a few. She is also an ambassador to GLAMOUR magazine.

Bri will be helping me highlight the interesting people, places, and services of our stylish city over the coming months, and I couldn’t be more excited. Since I am already a huge fan of her savoir-faire as a local celebrity, it’s only fitting that I share with you the lovely lady behind the brand.

Bri, your wardrobe is amazing. What is your favorite piece in your closet? My Fendi booties
What was the first designer item you ever bought? Probably a pair of Chanel sunglasses…the ones with the blinged out C’s. I remember watching MTV and seeing Jay Z wearing the same pair! I was so proud.
Who do you think is the best designer out there today? I think there are so many talented designers…I couldn’t pinpoint one.
If you could spend the day with one fashion icon living or dead, who would it be? Audrey Hepburn
What do you love most about your job? I LOVE working with people and helping them succeed in their business. Nothing makes me happier than calling a client or partner and giving them news in which furthers their career!
Describe your personal style. California hippie girl at heart…with a bit of rock n roll and high fashion.
M&M’s or Reese’s Pieces? M&M’s for sure…with a dr.pepper:)
You have $500 to spend on anything you’d like.  What do you buy? An ipad! It’s next on my list…no more paper press books…it’s all going on an ipad!
We all have one….what is your trashiest television indulgence? ALL The Real Housewives Shows. Oh…and Jersey Shore.
Name the worst thing in your closet that you just can’t give up. My uggs!
As the mom of a toddler, what would you say is your best parenting tip? Don’t try to keep up with “The Jones’”. Be yourself, teach your child to be themselves and love a lot! Each family raises their children in a different way…and that’s great! We’ve always traveled, been spontaneous and lived a bit untraditionally. And Samantha is very well-rounded because of it. Our 3 year old has been to pro skate contests, concerts, fashion shows….lived in a cottage at the beach, in a condo at the lake and now in a loft in downtown Dallas. I love teaching her diversity. And we just LOVE eachother A LOT! Our child gets lots of hugs and kisses.
What blog do you adore reading? I would say it’s between Apartment Therapy, Global Grind and Daily Beast.
Are there some valuable lessons you learned in 2010? Don’t EVER give up. Pursue your dreams and don’t let others try to take you down. Follow your heart and you will be fine…
What plans do you have for your company in 2011? I just want to keep working hard and have success for all my clients. I hope to sustain what we are currently doing…and double our team in 2012.

We will be updating you with more from Bri, but for now go get the scoop on Plan B PR at

People’s Choice Awards-The Fashion Do’s

Posted by    |    January 10th, 2011 at 5:33 pm

In case you missed the red carpet catwalk before the People’s Choice Awards, I’ve pulled a few of my favorite looks from the event.  I have to say, the mini-dress has never looked more impressive and done in so many different ways.  Although the trend at the awards is younger, younger, younger….this new freshman class is taking the lead with impeccable style. Celebrity stylists are a wise investment, and it shows.

Fit for Fashion in 2011 with Brian Johnson

Posted by    |    January 6th, 2011 at 10:34 pm

Today I want to introduce Brian Johnson, co-owner of The Movement Dallas.  Brian is giving us some great reminders this week in our Weekend Fashion Plan of Action on how we can look and feel better in our clothes. He is the guy who was probably voted “Most Likely To Help People Reach Their Potential” in high school.  I thought it might be nice to get to know Brian a little better….heck, he may even give us more tidbits on good nutrition, workout tips, and perhaps a yummy recipe or two so we can squeeze into this season’s sequin mini.  (Or a super tight tee if you’re a dude.) So, without further adieu, here is my quick Q&A with fitness guru, Brian….

Favorite restaurant in Dallas?  Bolsa

Best piece of fitness advice?  Know your limits and work within them.

Best piece of nutrition advice?  Keep it REAL… as in real food.

If you could spend the day doing anything, what would it be?
Touring a city that I have yet to travel to. (I haven’t been anywhere in CA!)

Trashiest television indulgence? Pawn Stars, Tosh.0, Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares

Valuable lesson you learned in 2010? To listen to my gut (heart) more. I have a tendency to over analyze and take the ‘over-thought’ route.

What plans do you have for your company in 2011?
To build a true lifestyle ‘hub’ that incorporates all things local; food, art, movement and music. To move to a space more suited to accomplishing these things. To build more community around The Movement Dallas.

Check out my favorite Movement Dallas recipe!

7 for ’11

Posted by    |    January 4th, 2011 at 9:49 pm

Can you belive it’s 2011? Yeah, me neither. Now that we are a few days into it, I’ve been reflecting on what helped get me through the overcommitted 2010.  Seven lovely life savers come to mind, so I thought I’d share them with you.  Here we go…

1. Clairsonic Plus-this slightly pricey but totally worth it gadget is nothing short of amazing.  If you go online and read the reviews of this product yourself, you’ll be as convinced as I was that this is the real deal.  With so many spas and even doctor’s offices selling them, it’s a great indication that the professionals give it their stamp of approval too. Since using this brush my skin is getting deep cleansing and it looks and feels great. You can literally feel a difference after one use.

2. Emjoi Epilator- this was a find that I came across when switching channels and landing on QVC.  I had tried laser hair removal in the past, but my schedule made it virtually impossible to keep up with the treatments for my legs. I thought I’d try this epilator to at least cut down on how often I have to shave my legs, and it really does work!  I won’t lie; it hurts just like waxing or laser, but you get used to it as time goes on.  If you want to substantially cut down on how often you break out the razor, this is a wonderful solution.

3. Cole Haan Air Georgina Boot- If you’ve ever worn a pair of Cold Haan’s with the comfort of Nike Air technology inside the shoe, you know why these are on the list.  These boots are gorgeous, stylish, and can be dressed up or down, and when you can walk in them all day and still have feeling in your feet, it’s a beautiful thing. This is a pair of boots where you don’t have to choose between style and comfort.

4. Hudson Jeans Signature Bootcut in Elm Dark Blue- Jeans are such a necessity that finding the right pair can really make you lose your mind.  Hudson makes comfortable, breathable, and long-lasting denim that looks good on practically any body type. I’m a fan!

5. Christian Dior Classic Sunglasses- We live in Texas, so sunglasses are attached to most of our heads and faces at some point during the day.  I like these because they are timeless, but also because they are HUGE and can cover up my dark circles, red eyes from seasonal allergies, or hide my face when I’m too lazy to put on makeup.

6. Tory Burch Reva Ballerina Flat- For those days when you just can’t put on another 6-inch heel. (Or basically any day you decide to do a marathon shopping trip to Northpark Center or fly out of DFW International.)

7. Tights from Forever 21- I put more holes in tights than donuts have, so I don’t buy expensive legwear anymore. Forever 21 has a great selection of colored and patterned tights, and you can wear them year around. WIth the price between $3-$7, you can afford all the colors of the rainbow!

I’m ready to begin a new treasure hunt for the must-have items for 2011….any recommendations I should know about?
