It should come as no surprised to avid sports fans and concerned families everywhere that Paterno’s statue was removed by Penn State authorities Sunday in advance of NCAA sanctions. According the press, the N.C.A.A. announced Sunday that it would levy “corrective and punitive measures” against Penn State in the wake of the child sex-abuse scandal involving a former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky and a scathing report that found school leaders covered up accusations against Mr. Sandusky. The NCAA may be one of the most inept organizations in the United States in policing its member universities, and penalties, if any, usually are enforced after a “deliberate” review. We look forward to their interpretation of an appropriate response in light of the overwhelming evidence that the institution itself is the guilty party.
