Collegiate Sports and the Black Male Student Athlete According to Dr. Leonard Moore

Posted by    |    October 23rd, 2011 at 6:00 am

YouPlusMedia has been on assignment to document the great work that the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement is doing at the University of Texas at Austin.  Dr. Greg Vincent, a Vice President and leader of this important effort at Texas, has allowed us to meet with a number of faculty, film in the classroom and around campus, and meet with students.   During the course of our assignment, we met Dr. Leonard Moore, a history professor and contributor to the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement.  Dr. Moore also has a developed a program to help the high profile black male athlete become a well rounded student athlete.  He has worked with athletes at high profile academic institutions such as LSU, University of Georgia, and the University of Texas.

We were immediately impressed,  and we decided to document his program during a video shoot on June 1, 2011 when Dr. Leonard Moore spoke before the Athletic Directors and several head coaches at the Dallas Independent School District “DISD”.  The meeting was arranged by DISD spokesman and great guy, Jon Dahlander, for Dallas ISD Athletic Director, Jeff Johnson, who had recently been awarded the Outstanding Director of Athletics Award from Positive Coaching Alliance-Dallas.  The award was given to him for his positive impact on youth athletics.  Johnson is special in many ways, so it is not surprising to us that he won this award given his life long commitment to teaching life lessons through sports. The well-attended meeting gave Dr. Moore an opportunity to candidly address the issues confronting Black Male Student Athletes and the specific issues that he has dealt with having worked directly with student athletes on several campuses.  This story is the first of a ten part series on how Dr. Moore’s program is designed to address critical issues facing coaches, faculty and student-athletes at the high school and collegiate level.
