This is the spring of Year Four of the June Jones revival on the Hilltop. Nobody questions that coach Jones has brought the Mustangs to a higher plateau, or that the Ponies are going to be bowl eligible most years. But, in a subtle tribute to Jones’s success, that’s no longer enough. This team probably isn’t going to contend for the non-cartel’s autobid to a BCS bowl (emphasis on probably) but the Wimple believes it will show consistency on offense fit to match its aggressive style of defense. It will not take an upset for SMU to snag eight wins in the regular season.

Each team had season-defining games last weekend. I have some good news and some bad news.
First, the good. The men’s soccer team (now ranked #5 nationally) beat #17 Tulsa and Memphis last week, vaulting them to the top of C-USA and proving that they are one of the elite teams in the country. Everyone seems to be talking about the football team’s turnaround, but the futbol team’s rise to the top is just as interesting.
Here’s a quick bed-time story for the children: SMU was ranked #1 in the country in 2006, and entered the NCAA tournament with national title hopes. SMU’s hopes were dashed, but they came back strong in 2007, again reaching a #1 ranking mid-season and a #5 ranking by the time the season was over. The next two years did not go as well, as the team ended each year unranked, with records of 10-6-2 in 2008 and 6-8-2 in 2009. (more…)
