With the return of college football on Thursday night, here’s the season premiere of the weekly post combining my SBNation BlogPoll ballot, parlay picks for 3 games each for college and the NFL (including every Illinois and Bears game) and a classic music video (heavily tilted toward old school rap, ’80s trash rock and ’90s one-hit wonders as always).  Let’s get to it:

Charting The 2011 Texas Longhorns Defense

LonghornScott’s recent post about last year’s Kansas State game got me thinking about how much the defense improved over the course of the season. Enticing to forecast 2012 based on that, given that last year was Manny’s first and that damn near the entire 2-deep is back. Probably dangerous, but good fun.

The Week That Will Be (09.01.2012)

How good is Texas going to be this year?

That’s been the question you have heard the most this offseason. From the pimple nosed cashier at the grocery store that sees your Texas t-shirt to the annoying co-worker who smirks at you when asking that question to Small Talk Airport Guy to the annoying cousin that went to an inferior state school, to your wife when she’s looking for something out of you other than a shrug of the shoulders and a grunt, you’ve no doubt heard it several times a week.

Three Texas Football Games on the Longhorn Network Still A Possibility

Texas welcomed new Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby into town Tuesday and Deloss Dodds took the opportunity to once again say that not one, not two, but three Texas home games could be on the Longhorn Network in 2012.

The Horns first two games — against Wyoming and New Mexico are already scheduled for the LHN. The Iowa State game on Nov 10 is probably the 3rd game. For you non-math majors out there that would be 25% of the schedule not available to the vast majority of viewers. Right now it is estimated that four million homes have the Longhorn Network.

Why Do You Do This?

Why do some people operate on the edge?  Professor Jose Bowen at SMU’s Meadows School stated that all creativity and innovation happens on the edge.  So why are some so driven that they will be live on the edge and push themselves well beyond the normal?  The creator of this short film used a Nikon D4 launch film capture the athletes in action and then look into their soles to answer one simple question:  Why?  This is an excellent short video worth viewing.
