The Frogs picked a good week to shut out a foe and capitalize on a loss ahead of them in the polls. The win tells little about TCU, however, as Wyoming is a woefully undermanned squad (only 67 ‘Pokes are on scholarship) and was playing without its best playmaker, quarterback Austin Carta-Samuels. Basically this was a bodybag game, conference affiliations notwithstanding.
TCU was unstoppable, scoring on its first seven drives, while holding Wyoming to one third-down conversion (via a pass interference penalty). Dalton was as good as his performance against Baylor, completing 82% of his passes, including three for touchdowns (two of them long– a 50-yard score to Jeremy Kerley, and a 31-yard score to Bart Johnson).
The Frogs lines performed well. Before garbage minutes (to be kind to Wyoming, the Wimple will call the first three quarters non-garbage minutes) the Frogs’ usual quartet of running threats (Wesley, Tucker, James, and Dalton) tallied 245 yards and two scores on 34 carries. Wyoming reached 75 yards on 28 carries.
The Cowboys did get two long completions– one on a reverse double-pass to open the game. But the ‘Pokes’ only scoring threat was nixed by an interception, which marked Tyler Luttrell’s return to action. Don’t expect Luttrell to reclaim his starting role from Colin Jones, however. Jones had six tackles, one for a loss, and was generally monstrous in the secondary. Another critical defensive performance came from Tekerrein Cuba, who led the team in tackles (12) in Alex Ibiloye’s absence. Also notable, TCU played its freshmen corners for most of the game. Elisha Olabode and Travaras Battle appear to be next year’s starters.
Look for TCU to regain the fourth spot in the polls, passed falling Alabama. BYU, running attack revived, comes to Fort Worth in a week, for its fifth loss of the season.
