A huge turnout as usual gathered on both sides of Independence as we drove up to our yearly spot to celebrate America’s Independence. This was our 15th year at the parade as a family and we had a great time.
The parade began on time at 9:00am and wound its way from 15th Street to Parkhaven along Independence Parkway. It was filled with the usual participants: Boys and Girl scouts, Plano Councilman Ben Harris, local churches, kid sports teams, local businesses and parents marching pulling their children in decorated wagons. Other children rode their bicycles, decorated with crepe paper and American flags.
But this parade almost didn’t even happen. The Plano Independence Day Parade, put on by the Plano Early Lion’s Club, was in danger of folding because of funding cuts. The Plano Star-Courier newspaper came through and announced that it has agreed to become the parade’s primary sponsor only a couple of days before the parade.
We always look forward to this fun event as a family to get together and see how many free pieces of candy we can put in an american flag hat.
