Before you head to the SMU homecoming game have fun and get fit by helping a good cause

Posted by    |    October 11th, 2012 at 3:11 pm

On Saturday, October 27th the SMU chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta will be holding their annual 5k run benefiting their on going support of CASA. CASA (court appointed special advocates) is a non-profit organization of volunteers that gives a voice to the thousands of children in foster care. Founded in 1977, CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children. Today more than 500 volunteers serve more than 1,300 children each year, giving them a chance at a safe and permanent home.

So come out and support this great cause by walking, running or skipping the 5k or the One Mile Fun Run. Registration starts at 7:00am followed by the two races with everything finishing up around 9:00am when awards and goodies will be given out. This year they will be  raffling off some great prizes from Dry Bar, Raising Cane’s, Bandito’s and Uptown Country and more! Check out the SMU calendar for more information about registration and scheduling.

Delicious Doesn’t Do It Justice…PoPaLiCious Paletas

Natural. Organic. Naturally sweetened.  These buzz words aren’t just hype; Americans are on the healthy lifestyle bandwagon and starting a food revolution.  (Thanks to Jamie Oliver for giving us a jump-start.) Oh sure, you know where you can get veggies and fruit to cook a healthy meal with, but what about something for the sweet tooth?  The secret is out: paletas are the sweet treat you’ve been looking for with less calories than that slice of lemon cake at Starbucks (fruit bars are 50-60 calories!) You don’t have to travel to Mexico to experience the sweet, cool, and divine flavors of chilly paletas any longer, because local treat connoisseur Pamela Rueda has you covered. (more…)

Stress calls for Katy Trail, Milo’s & Digg’s Tacos

The bright green grass at SMU

It’s the beginning of April and that can only mean one thing: one more month til summer. Or graduation for some.

At SMU the stress is running high as exams, projects, papers, and worse: the real world is approaching. After talking to several of my friends who are graduating in May, there are many mixed feelings that come along with an approaching graduation date. Nervousness, doubt, excitement, and utter fear. “I’m expected to leave the safety bubble that is SMU, find a job, possibly move to a new city, and live in the REAL WORLD?” Yep. After 16+ years of schooling, the time has finally come for a lot of students.

But for the rest of SMU, the non-graduation crowd, life is a little less stressful. Although finals are just around the corner, they’re still an arm’s length away to where lounging in the grass on the hilltop and getting your tan on is still commonplace.

Spring is Finally Here…and Now I Want Summer

The Sprinkles truck in Highland Park

As a junior at SMU, exploring Dallas during the weekends is something that comes naturally at this point. No more staying on campus and going to the same ole-same ole lunch places and no more just going to see a movie. My friends and I are all about trying new restaurants, bars and exploring Dallas.

This weekend we did exactly that. A bit of a spontaneous weekend for me, but really relaxing at the same time. We started the weekend off on Thursday evening at Coal Vines with some of my best girl friends. Yep, the weekend starts on Thursday. If you didn’t know it already, it’s the goal to not schedule classes on Fridays—and if you do have class Fridays, you better be prepared to be pretty tired. But, we wanted a more relaxed Thursday evening. At Coal Vines I started off with my favorite (prosecco) and we all shared two large pizzas. I tried a salad on the side—the Mesculin Greens. It came with mixed field greens, green apples, montrachet, cranberries and bacon Dijon vinaigrette. Mmmm it was so delicious I know I will go back there just for that awesome salad.

Obvious Apps: the product of two SMU grads

During an app idea contest for Obvious Apps, Danny Le entered his idea “Study Now” which would serve as a bank of information for accounting and finance classes. This app would be available on smart phones and iPads, and would help students all over the world. His app idea won and is now on iTunes, and he received a free iPad from Obvious Apps.

So, what is Obvious Apps? Realizing the way apps are made (i.e. developers put the apps out on the market and see if people buy it) isn’t that efficient, Stewart Youngblood, co-founder of Obvious Apps, had dreams of making a business out of it. A locally grown mobile app company started up by two recent Southern Methodist University graduates, Obvious Apps is a place where you can submit your app ideas and if voted on, they create the app and you receive a royalty for each app downloaded.

Football Night in Park Cities: HP wins, Ponies fall

Posted by    |    September 24th, 2010 at 11:37 pm

Two wild, exciting games tonight. At Highlander Stadium, the HP Scots held strong against a furious second half comeback by Rockwall to win 37-30. Senior wide receiver Dalton Stogner was brilliant, with three huge touchdown catches. Senior QB Jake Howeth passed and ran for scores, while also making numerous stellar plays in the secondary. The top-ranked Scots improved to 4-0.

Over at Ford Field, the SMU Mustangs hosted TCU, now ranked #4 in the nation. The Ponies gave the Horned Frogs ALL they could handle for three and a half quarters, but TCU pulled away late to win 41-24. The game was highly touted by SMU fans and according to one former SMU player who attended, “was a fantastic fight that reminded you of the old Southwest Conference battles these teams had. Just great football.” The best news? You+Dallas film crews captured incredible footage of both games which will be on the site this week!
