Delicious Doesn’t Do It Justice…PoPaLiCious Paletas

Posted by    |    August 17th, 2011 at 10:05 am

Natural. Organic. Naturally sweetened.  These buzz words aren’t just hype; Americans are on the healthy lifestyle bandwagon and starting a food revolution.  (Thanks to Jamie Oliver for giving us a jump-start.) Oh sure, you know where you can get veggies and fruit to cook a healthy meal with, but what about something for the sweet tooth?  The secret is out: paletas are the sweet treat you’ve been looking for with less calories than that slice of lemon cake at Starbucks (fruit bars are 50-60 calories!) You don’t have to travel to Mexico to experience the sweet, cool, and divine flavors of chilly paletas any longer, because local treat connoisseur Pamela Rueda has you covered. (more…)

Spring is Finally Here…and Now I Want Summer

The Sprinkles truck in Highland Park

As a junior at SMU, exploring Dallas during the weekends is something that comes naturally at this point. No more staying on campus and going to the same ole-same ole lunch places and no more just going to see a movie. My friends and I are all about trying new restaurants, bars and exploring Dallas.

This weekend we did exactly that. A bit of a spontaneous weekend for me, but really relaxing at the same time. We started the weekend off on Thursday evening at Coal Vines with some of my best girl friends. Yep, the weekend starts on Thursday. If you didn’t know it already, it’s the goal to not schedule classes on Fridays—and if you do have class Fridays, you better be prepared to be pretty tired. But, we wanted a more relaxed Thursday evening. At Coal Vines I started off with my favorite (prosecco) and we all shared two large pizzas. I tried a salad on the side—the Mesculin Greens. It came with mixed field greens, green apples, montrachet, cranberries and bacon Dijon vinaigrette. Mmmm it was so delicious I know I will go back there just for that awesome salad.

Last Friday, Dallas Mavericks guard and 10-time NBA All-Star Jason Kidd announced that the Jason Kidd Foundation will hold its first Celebrity Casino Night on March 21 hosted by local sports broadcaster Chris Arnold and radio personality Kellie Raspberry of Kidd Kraddick in the Morning.

The event will feature a celebrity poker tournament as well as a live auction that includes items such as a trip to New York Fashion Week and a round of golf with Jason Kidd himself.  Additionally, those who are unable to attend the event will still have the opportunity to bid on auction items online from March 9 to March 30.

5 minutes. 20 slides. What would you have to say?

Five minutes, 20 slides. What would you say?

Last night at Ignite Dallas, 16 artists, technologists, thinkers, and personalities took the stage to answer this challenge.

They describe their event this way, “Ignite is fast-paced, fun, thought-provoking, social, local, global. It’s a high-energy evening of 5-minute talks by people who have an idea—and the guts to get onstage and share it with their hometown crowd. Presentations are a mix of serious vs. fun presentations, and are often about geeky activities…”

Curious onlookers gathered at the Granada Theater to hear a random presentation of ideas and philosophies from seasoned professionals to virgin speakers.

Are you patriotic? Here’s how you can show it.

Did you know that every day, more than 100 soldiers pass through DFW Airport on their way home for two weeks of well-deserved rest and recuperation (R&R).  The R&R Program was created to meet and greet the troops returning home from battle and to encourage and support our deployed military.  One flight of returning soldiers lands at DFW every day and the warm welcome provided by volunteer greeters begins the troops’ visit on a high note. A small portion meets their families here but the majority will catch connecting flights home.

Win Free Flowers for Valentine’s Day

Look what showed up on my doorstep today!

The Koran states, “Bread feeds the body… but flowers feed the soul.”

There’s nothing quite as wondrous as a flower. Bathed in color, supple to touch, luscious in scent. Flowers can be sexy, sensuous, playful, flirty, mysterious and are always magical to behold.

Emma Goldman said, “I’d rather have roses on my table than diamonds on my neck.” I don’t know if I’d go that far… but I do love a fragrant bouquet of flowers.

The Flower Cart is a Dallas florist who would like to make your Valentine’s Day – or any ‘ole day – a little brighter.  They have given me a $30 gift card to bestow on one lucky reader. (more…)

Super Bowl XLV Party Crashers

Heather Morris from Glee

I received a top-secret phone call last Thursday.  The mission – should I chose to accept it – was to hit the town Saturday night and try to crash all of the hottest Super Bowl parties the night before the Big Game.  I would be given a new tricked-out 2011 Ford Explorer to drive and a savvy posse of fellow-crashers. There were no tickets and no special access. The challenge was to drive up in a great car, bullshit our way into these exclusive events and document our journey.

I’ve always liked a challenge…  In college, my friends and I had a rule. Never stand in line, never pay cover and never pay for drinks.  It worked great when I was 20.  But could I still compete with a bevvy of the city’s hottest gals who were ALL out on the same night?

My co-horts in crime and I met up for dinner at Villa-O Saturday evening to formulate our plan of attack. We came up with a list of the most high-profile parties and decided to start at the top and work our way down to see where we could get in. (more…)

Legends of Charity celebrates NFL on Fox

Posted by    |    February 3rd, 2011 at 10:46 pm

After a long week of icy roads, freezing temperatures and a slew of canceled Super Bowl events…  The NFL on FOX on-air team was honored tonight at the seventh annual Legends for Charity dinner to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at the Hilton Anatole.  The dinner celebrated the broadcasting and professional football careers of the NFL on FOX on-air talent while showcasing the lifesaving research and treatment done at St. Jude.

“The group award this year – which varies from the original concept of selecting an individual who has not only excelled in their field but for their personal commitment to making a difference in the lives of others – was done to celebrate the difference the network – The NFL ON FOX – is making through their creation of the FOX Sports Supports program,” said Mr. Summerall. ” It was a perfect way to celebrate their selection of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.”

The Art of Skateboarding

Posted by    |    November 15th, 2010 at 8:23 am

Last week I attended the 3d annual The Art of Skateboarding at South Side on Lamar with my 10 year-old son.

It was an evening of spectacular art, skateboarding, cocktails and fun benefiting Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.

Throughout the evening guests could bid on and purchase their favorite artist’s skateboard and limited edition Vans shoes.

175 skateboards were on display, designed by either a celebrity artist, clothing designer, graphic designer, or a local artist.
