Brew Riot 2013 is taking place May, 19 2013 in the Bishop Arts District, and with more than 60 home brew teams signed up it’s sure to be one heck of a party! We’re expecting a hugh crowd this year, so we recommend you read the information below and buy your tickets in advance.

The fun kicks off with the 2nd annual 1.1 mile beer run, which starts at Nova Restaurant (1417 West Davis) at 3:30pm and proceeds down 7th Street with 3 beer stops before the finish line in Bishop Arts. If you plan to participate in the 1.1 then you MUST register in advance. The cost is $35 and that INCLUDES your admission into Brew Riot as well as the ever popular 1.1 sticker for your car. Tickets for the 1.1 are available via PreKindle – click here! Runners need to be at Nova by 3pm and the run will start at 3:30pm.

If running isn’t quite your bag, then go ahead and purchase your ticket in advance for Brew Riot. The cost is $20 and this gives you the opportunity to sample all of the home brews and vote for your favorite. There’s some amazing beer being poured this year, and odds are good that many of these home brew teams are your next local commercial breweries. Four Corners Brewing Co. got their start at the very first Brew Riot, and look at them now! Pre-sale tickets for Brew Riot are available via PreKindle – click here!

The beer starts flowing at 4pm and will be served until teams run out and we crown a People’s Choice Champion of the 5th Annual Brew Riot.

In addition to beer we’ve also got a great line up of live music, including The O’s, The Birds of Night and Hunter Jones!

If you’ve been to the Oak Cliff area recently, you know that there are many interesting and successful new businesses. But did you know that many of them are owned by women? On Saturday, May 18, The Kessler Co-Op will open its doors to women throughout the Metroplex for a free workshop on building and protecting a business entitled “Being Yourself in Business: It’s Your Thang.”

“The point is to educate women so they better understand all the things that come into building and protecting their businesses and images,” said Melissa Thrailkill, a small business and intellectual property attorney with an office in The Kessler Co-Op. “Women will leave the workshop with valuable information that will not only help them start or grow their businesses, but that will put them ahead of the game.”

The workshop will run from 9 a.m. to noon, beginning with a yoga instruction by Nicole Cronkhite, RYT, who will demonstrate techniques and practices that can be used to ease the stress, anxiety, and fear that can sometimes creep into the day. The rest of the morning will include discussions on trademarks and trademark law, marketing, networking, and remaining confident in your business without compromising your identity or ideals.

At the workshop’s conclusion at noon, the conversation and hands-on learning will continue with visits to local businesses and restaurants in Oak Cliff.

“It’s a way for us to come together and share knowledge so that our businesses grow, as well as our personal beings and lives,” Thrailkill continued. “What better way to do this than to come together in a supportive co-working space and community bustling with women-owned businesses?”

A host of activity will be happening on May 17th, better known as National Bike to Work Day! Bike Friendly Oak Cliff is working with BikeDFW and DART to host its first Energizer Station, modeled off of past events originally created by Bike Friendly Richardson. There will be 4 other such stations hosted in Dallas and surrounding cities. Go to bikedfw.org for more details!

But, BFOC does things a bit differently down here across the river. We are hoping to make it the most outrageous Energizer Station to date. We’ll give you a hint: Think loud and fun, with a bit of authentic Oak Cliff culture!

Along with all of that fun, we’ll have snacks, beverages, and we’ll be providing bicycle safety checks for folks crossing the Jefferson St Viaduct by bicycle in the new temporary cycle track.

We have several sponsoring businesses including, KIND Healthy Snacks, Zang Triangle apartments, Oak Cliff Bicycle Company and Oak Cliff Cargo Bicycles

The Energizer Station will be open from 6:30 AM – 9:00 AM and will be located directly in the Jefferson St Viaduct’s newly installed cycle track.

A big thank you to our sponsors!

He’s run for Congress, built better blocks in cities around the world, helped make Oak Cliff bike friendlier and started a conspiracy of do-gooder artists. For years, Jason Roberts has been busy making Dallas a better place one project at a time but now he needs your help! In 2012, Jason was diagnosed with testicular cancer. After chemotherapy, radiation and surgery he was pronounced cancer free, but while the cancer is gone Roberts still has $40,000 in medical bills

The Kessler Theater in partnership with Go Oak Cliff and Jason Roberts supporters can help Jason fight the costs of his cancer battle. There will be a bike ride, live music and an art auction. The event is $25, but additional donations of any amount of are encouraged. All proceeds will go toward helping Jason erase his medical debt

The “I Bike Jason” bikeride will begin outside of Eno’s at 7:00 p.m. and end at the Kessler. Wearing Jason inspired gear is part of the fun. Comments by special guest will begin at the Kessler at 8:00 and the bands and art auction will begin shortly therafter. Some of Jason’s favorite bands and artist have donated their talents to help raise money. Those bands include John Singer Sergeant – of the Deathray Davies, Austin sensations the White Ghost Shivers, R&B legend Bobby Patterson plus a few surprises.

“Jason is a tremendous person,” said Edwin Cabaniss, Kessler Theater owner. “He gives to his community tirelessly. Build a Better Jason is a way for everyone who knows, loves and appreciates him to help him close the book on his fight with cancer.”

Download a copy of the 2013 Grant application here

Every year, the Old Oak Cliff Conservation League gives out thousands of dollars to go to neighborhoods for a variety of different projects, from promoting a neighborhood’s identity with sign toppers to beautification projects, such as creating pocket parks or enhancing a median strip, or helping a neighborhood provide security such as security cameras. Whatever your neighborhood project is, the League can help. Neighborhoods are the fabric of our community and however we can help that neighborhood, will help to make all of Oak Cliff a better place to live.
