Dallas Tweed Ride 2017

Posted by    |    November 27th, 2017 at 8:47 pm

Dallas Tweed Ride

Sport your finest tweedy attire and join BFOC for a leisurely jaunt about town on bicycle!

The legendary Tweed Ride will roll out of the Union Station at high noon, 12:00pm on December 3rd! Traffic will naturally pause, watching in disbelief as happy cyclists pass by pedaling through the crisp winter air. The entire group will be wearing charming tweed outfits, like a collective art installation transporting everyone involved to a more beautiful time and place.

The pace is slow enough for anyone to keep up, so dust off your cruiser, let your street bike enjoy the relaxing pace, invite your sweet old neighbor and bring the kids. The bike ride route will be from Union Station to Local Hub Bicycle Shop where one lucky cyclist wearing the best Tweed outfit will be awarded a gift card.  Then we will move onward to Internet Cafe 2, and finally to Turner House in North Oak Cliff.

Oddfellows Restaurant will sponsor the activities on the lawn including tug-of-war, 3-legged races, and more! Matt Tolentino of the Singapore Slingers will be back performing accordion on the lawn, and there’ll be plenty of hot cider and mulled wine. The Facebook event is here.

This is your chance to get friends and family on bicycles together for a day full of smiles, whether they normally ride or not!

Don’t own a bike? There are plenty of bike shares out there! And our starting location, Union Station, is SUPER easy to get to via public transportation, so consider planning your day to include an adventure on the DART train, local busses, or organize a group ride from your neighborhood to the starting point then home again.  There will be plenty of Bike Share bicycles available too.  Be on the look out for the a free ride Promo Code!

There is no cost to join the ride! Bring your own picnic, pack extra to share with new friends and bring cash to buy refreshment or BFOC swag.  There will be pint glasses, cycle-related booklets, and t-shirts available.  Proceeds from all sales will support the community efforts of Bike Friendly Oak Cliff.

BFOC is bringing back the On the Trail of Lee Harvey Oswald history tour bicycle ride on Sunday, April 30th 2017 at 11:30AM starting at Dealey Plaza in Downtown Dallas, and passing the infamous residences of JFK’s alleged assassin. This was the group ride that launched BFOC in 2008, and is one of our favorites. Our ride will take us over the 1912 Houston Street Viaduct, crossing into North Oak Cliff, and stopping at pivotal spots from that fateful day in 1963.

This ride will be weather permitting so check back for updates. Highlights of the trip will include:

– Meeting in front of the Sixth Floor Museum
– Riding over the 1912 Houston Street Viaduct
– Stopping at 1026 N. Beckley, last residence of Lee Harvey Oswald
– Following LHO’s escape route to the site where JD. Tippit was shot
– Visit the Texas Theatre, site of LHO’s capture
– Ride through the Bishop Arts District
– Beers at Better Block HQ at 700 W. Davis
– Stopping at 214 W. Neely, site of infamous Oswald “Backyard Photos”
– Back to Downtown

Partake in BFOC’s 2016 Cyclesomatic Library tour on Oct. 29. from 9:30AM – Noon.

This will be a collaborative ride lead by Kristie Holt from Local Hub and Mark Draz from the Dallas Public Library. Mark is leading an initiative for Dallas Public Library’s first book bike . Book bikes have been rolling in Portland, Denver and Boston for years. This is one more way that Dallas is improving its reputation as an unfriendly city for cyclists. This library tour will provide us an opportunity to support the Library Bike project and discover Dallas libraries in our Oak Cliff neighborhood.

  • 10:00: North Oak Cliff – 302 W 10th St (oak cliff connection point)

Bike Rodeo – Nov 5 (8AM – 10AM)

Posted by    |    September 24th, 2016 at 2:33 pm

Join BFOC for Oak Cliff’s first Bike Rodeo on Nov. 5th from 8AM to 10AM at the 10th street parking lot at Cliff Temple Baptist Church (125 Sunset Ave, Dallas). The Bike Rodeo will be in conjunction with Oak Cliff’s farmer’s market organized by the Oak Cliff Lions Club.

This Bike Rodeo is taught by certified instructors from the League of American Bicyclists. Instructors set up an interactive bicycle obstacle course for children to maneuver through, teaching bike handling and safety skills through active learning. This fun and free activity challenges children and emphasizes the importance of controlling your bicycle, watching for traffic, and turning safely.

Before children get on the course, we check their helmet fit and discuss the importance of wearing a helmet. (A limited number of free helmets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis). We also do a basic safety check on their bicycle to ensure it is in good working order.

Participants must have a working bicycle, a helmet that fits (a limited number of free helmets will be available for participants), and a parent/legal guardian present.
