The Queen of House

Zarnaz “Zee” Zandi was named Wynn Las Vegas’ Director of Nightlife Entertainment last summer and nary six months into the job she is already making some serious waves. Since her arrival to the tony resort, the music programs at XS, Tryst, Surrender and Encore Beach Club have seen a chrysalis from open format to house. This similarly mirrors a broader mainstreaming of the genre. Now with a slew of newly inked residencies and some of the biggest names in house music (or music in general) playing at Wynn, the resort’s clubs seem to be hotter than ever. Here we tap some of Zandi’s thoughts on Vegas nightlife, music and being a powerhouse. (more…)

Nightlife Gives Back – to the Tune of $171,000

Posted by    |    December 7th, 2011 at 4:56 pm

We often see images of extravagant receipts from nightclub revelers, but it’s the holiday season and Jesse Waits’ and his staff at Tryst and XS (Wynn and Encore Las Vegas) definitely racked up a charitable, 150 foot long one themselves – that totaled $171,000! The money comes exclusively from staff donations and goes to buy over 10,000 toys for underprivileged kids. This is their sixth year and they continue to shatter previously records ($106K last year). Also getting into the spirit at Encore is Surrender Nightclub where if you bring an unwrapped toy you get free admission tonight. –David Morris

One Electrifying Weekend – Ibiza Meets Vegas

Posted by    |    July 5th, 2011 at 4:21 am

Last weekend the Las Vegas Motor Speedway played host to the Electronic Daisy Carnival (EDC). Though local and national news outlets had raised concerns over safety leading up to the massive party, attended by well north of 200,000 people, these proved unfounded. Though the massive 1000+ acre infield was certainly crowded, people were well behaved and in fact things appeared better organized than other festivals such as Glastonbury and Coachella. Unlike other festivals EDC was definitely a total sensory overload. Hundreds of trippy performers cavorted around the grounds. Some dressed as fish on stilts, neon blobs, and others as what we will just refer to as whimsical, fey-like creatures. Beyond the performers, there were also free carnival rides, but the real draw here was certainly the music. Major electronic dance music (EDM) talent was omnipresent throughout the weekend. Highlights included sets by Manufactured Superstars, Sander van Doorn, Calvin Harris, Steve Aoki, Afrojack, Cedric Gervais, Martin Solveig, Benny Benassi, EC Twins, Ferry Corsten, and Wolfgang Gartner. Certainly headliners like Tiesto and David Guetta wowed, but Avicii, Skillex and Swedish House Mafia were simply unbelievable. Near the end of Swedish House Mafia’s 2-hour long set they transitioned into their latest single “Save the World” and the crowd erupted as the lights came up revealing the vocalist John Martin center stage offering a live performance as Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso stood on top of the booth to hype the crowd. This occurred while a ten minute fireworks show was underway and Red Bull skydivers shot off flames that lit up the sky.

Out of Night Comes Day

Summer is finally starting to heat up and what better way to cool off then with the official start of pool season? But, wait… other than the one off pool party hosted by Ghostbar at Cirque and the alright weekly splash over at The Joule where can we go?

The obvious answer is Las Vegas, where a pool culture has been cultivating for years. Certainly, the war for supremacy here is ever raging but, Encore Beach Club (EBC) by all accounts is the reigning king. With 60,000 square feet of palm tree lined and shower pole decadence; this venue has literally been built for one giant party. It is visually one of the most stunning daylife environments anywhere and that allows it to attract an equally gorgeous crowd. Rather than just offering de rigor cabanas and daybeds, EBC has lily pads – which are basically beds in the water! Their cabanas certainly feature prime views of the party but, also boast balconies overlooking the strip. Once more, they offer eight 350 square foot bungalows (as big as a standard hotel room) which include private bathrooms and infinity pools. What should not surprise fans of the Wynn is that the service here is on par with what can be found at the Four Seasons or Mandarin Oriental. Though cabana attendants mist guests every 30 minutes with Evian and the venue is stunning, this would be lost if the entertainment quotient was not in place. You can rest assured it most certainly is. Last year Kaskade held court most Sundays giving EBC instant cred. This year the residency list is simply out of control with Steve Aoki, Afrojack, Deadmau5 and a whole lot more being thrown into the mix. To give you an idea, here is what’s going down this weekend: (more…)
