First of all, let’s address the name.

Mot Hai Ba, prounced mo’oht high bah, means 1, 2, 3.

Why should you care? Mot Hai Ba is a new casual, high-energy Vietnamese restaurant by Jeana Johnson and Colleen O’Hare (Chef/Owners, Good 2 Go Taco and Chefs of Goodfriend Beer Garden and Burger House) featuring menu items inspired by meals eaten by the chefs/owners on their motorcycle tour through the city of Hanoi, Vietnam.

These are some pretty cool ladies.

Mot Hai Ba’s lunch and dinner menu will feature menu items ranging from Vietnamese “street food” to sophisticated French and Chinese influenced dishes that would be prepared in chef-driven restaurants in and around Hanoi. The chefs will pair that with an all-French wine list and a beer list made up of French, Belgian, and Asian beers.

Enjoy your immersion into Vietnam at the intimate custom rolled steel tables or on the patio.

Mot Hai ba will open Tuesday, April 23 on 6047 Lewis Street, Dallas, Texas 75206 (former York Street restaurant).

Linus was reticent to discuss his fascination of The Great Pumpkin with his friends. And really, who can blame him? It wasn’t a popular subject. Even his sister, Lucy, thought he was crazy.

“That stupid blockhead of a brother of mine is out in the pumpkin patch making his yearly fool of himself.”

Linus, may I give you some advice? Don’t let ‘em get to you. That pumpkin patch is full of fall goodness and ready to be enjoyed. Get on in there and knock yourself out.

There’s nothing quite like a sea of orange pumpkins to get you in an Autumn state-of-mind. And the Dallas Arboretum has, what could very well be, the greatest pumpkin festival in the country. Over 50,000 pumpkins, squash and gourds transform the gardens into a magical, fall wonderland. Literally. “It’s a Fairy Tale World” is this year’s theme, and the folks at the Arboretum have outdone themselves with Cinderella’s Pumpkin Village, complete with a life-size enchanted carriage and four houses based on the classic fairytale.

He can't get to the pumpkins fast enough...

If you happen to have a little “Linus” at home, might I suggest making a trip (or many) to this east Dallas, nature escape? Autumn at the Arboretum is simply a “must see” – regardless of age. Our entire family loves it. And fortunately for us, Mimi & Papa (my parents) have a family membership, which means we’ve basically become regulars. In fact, my toddler, Max, got to see the pumpkins twice last week. And judging by the crazy-eyed, arm-flailing sprint he made towards the pumpkin village, it won’t be our last.

You never know, on any given day, what you might find. Be it nail salon, beading store or authentic thai food, Lakewood has it…but keep your eyes peeled. Sometimes they’re located on the streets less traveled.

I drive on Skillman daily. But rarely do I venture all the way down to where it dead ends at La Vista. Thankfully, on Monday, I did. Much to my delight, I found yet another Lakewood gem. Lakewood Consignment Studio caught my eye…and I’m fairly certain my quick lane change and last minute turn into their parking lot made a screeching sound like the one you hear in the movies. As I enter their shop, my initial reaction was disbelief and weak knees. Two woven wicker, vintage Neiman Marcus chair sat before me. They were priced exceptionally well and if they would have fit in our little Lakewood abode, I would have immediately snatched them up.

A mix of different decades and styles, Lakewood Consignment Studio has a little something for everyone. Prices range from steals to splurges but if you like to hunt for one-of-a-kind finds and avoid putting anything mass-produced in your home, this place is a must-see.

The icing on the consignment cake? They provide custom upholstery, draperies, painting and finishes…making Lakewood Consignment Studio a one-stop-shop!

CB: Our favorite family outing is riding our bikes through the neighborhood. We also love going to the lake and the Arboretum.

YPD: What’s your go-to, Lakewood spot to grab some good grub?

CD: Scalini’s

YPD: And your favorite neighborhood hidden gem?

CB: Times Ten Cellars…but they’re not so hidden any more!

YPD: Between running a business and running your home, you must stay pretty busy. How do you manage it all?

CB: I turn work off most nights by 6:00…it’s an agreement that my husband and I have (unless he’s traveling then i’ll stay up all night working! )

YPD: It must be pretty cool to have a mom who owns a kids’ boutique. Do Luke and Lola give you their two cents?

CB: To this day, my kids motivate me … I ask their opinion on everything for miniME!!

YPD: Did you always know you wanted to open a baby and childrens’ boutique?

CB: Well, the baby market was really poor when I had my first child in 2002. We lived in Seattle and there was nothing there but babie-r-us. When we moved to Dallas, I found there was nothing here either. So upon turning 30, I decided now or never! I had a retail background as a buyer for Federated Dept stores in San Francisco. So that experience gave me the confidence to open something here…babybliss.

YPD: What inspired you to open it’s sister store, miniME?

CB: My kids have outgrown babybliss as have many of my customers…so it was a natural progression! My customers…they are SO LOYAL, I appreciate that so much! They motivate me to stay on top of the trends, shop all markets and find them the best of what is out there! You can’t get lazy…and that’s why we continue to grow!

YPD: And what about you? Where do you shop?

CB: Gypsy Wagon and Anthropologie! As for home interiors, my favorite store is Kuhl Linscomb in Houston. It is amazing!! I tend to frequent vintage shops in Dallas…Again and Again, Mid Century Modern in Deep Ellum. Always trying to find those special pieces.

YPD: Where do you shop in Lakewood?

CB: Whole Foods!

Ahab Bowen, a Dallas staple for vintage clothing and accessories, might have closed their Oak Lawn doors after 35 years of business, but for those of us in Lakewood, there’s reason to celebrate. Owner, Michael Longcrier, isn’t getting out of the game completely. And that’s good news for us, folks. Looks like these one-of-a-kind gems will be heading over into our neck of the woods.

East Dallas hipster hotspot, Dolly Python, will soon carry Ahab Bowen’s eclecticassortment of timeless styles, keeping Longcrier’s dream and hobby, alive. Gretchen Bell, owner of Dolly Python and former Ahab Bowen employee, learned the business first-hand from Longcrier. The two are reuniting, giving vintage-lovers’ (and East Dallas locals) reason to cheer. Looks like it’s out with the old, and in with the…old. And I, for one, couldn’t be more pleased.

Real Vietnamese, that is. These noodelicious restaurants are popping up everywhere, quickly becoming a top (healthy) choice for food aficionados all over Dallas. Greenville Avenue is getting in the game with the opening of Pho is for Lovers. While it certainly can be for lovers, this family-owned, cozy eatery is a great place to go with friends, co-workers and family too! Their menu is diverse and includes authentic Vietnamese street food, but their specialty goes without saying. Pho, a national Vietnamese dish, is low in fat and full of nutrition. And this new kid on the block uses the best of the best – fresh, delicious ingredients served up in true Vietnamese fashion.

Authentic, healthy and delicious food prepared just for you in a cozy, family-owned environment. You’ll leave Pho in love.
