For some, Downtown Dallas is right at their fingertips, along with access to some of our city’s greatest restaurants, sites, museums and shopping. But for those have to endure a long trip down the toll way just to get a glimpse of the illuminated skyline, here’s a few events that might coax you out of your not so urban area.

The meeting planners’ final evening at the Omni Dallas Grand Opening Experience drew to a close with the Gala Dinner and After Party, followed by a Gospel Brunch in the morning.
American Idol alum and North Texas resident Tim Halperin was already performing onstage when meeting planners entered the Omni’s Dallas Ballroom for the Gala Dinner. Halperin performed a cover of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” and his original “I Wanna Fall In Love”.
MSNBC’s Contessa Brewer hosted the closing night experience. She introduced former Dallas Cowboy and Author of Rules of Engagement: Finding Faith and Purpose in a Disconnected World, Chad Hennings, who spoke about Cowboy fandom. He referred to Dallas as the “greatest city in the nation” to much applause and invited the planners to “come on back.” (more…)

Saturday, the third day of the “Definitely Dallas!” Grand Opening Experience at the Omni Dallas Hotel, meeting planners were given the opportunity to attend a variety of tours throughout the city. The Old American Golf Club, What’s New in Dallas?, Dallas Arboretum, a Shopping Excursion and a Downtown Dallas Tour were on the list for planners to choose from.
“I was born and raised in Dallas, then left when I was about 18 years old. This is the first time that I’ve come back as a tourist to see how Dallas has changed,” said Austin resident Ray Lindner.
The Downtown Dallas Tour started off at the Grassy Knoll before taking a tour of the Sixth Floor Museum. Members of the tour group were fascinated by JFK and asked many questions related to the assassination and conspiracy theories. “I was actually a student in Dallas when the assassination occurred,” said Lindner. “For me…it’s a step back in time.” (more…)

Today through Sunday April 29, the new Omni Hotel Dallas will be hosting hundreds of influential meeting planners from across the nation for the Grand Opening Experience. The meeting planners will get to experience the best of Dallas: visiting Texas Motor Speedway, touring Southfork Ranch with Dallas star Larry Hagman and a Dallas Cowboys Stadium tour among other exciting experiences and musical appearances from Tim Halperin and Jack Ingram.
Sounds pretty cool, eh? Here’s how we look at it: impress meeting planners + meetings eventually planned in Dallas = awesome economic impact for our city.
YouPlusDallas videographers & co will be on scene tweeting about Omni Dallas events and bringing you a video recap of the best of the Grand Opening Experience.
One of the first events for the meeting planners is happening today, and it’s called The Big Freeze. You’re probably familiar with The Big Freeze 360-degree camera experience from the Grammys, Golden Globes, and other glamorous Hollywood events. Our crew set up the Big Freeze at the Omni this morning, and meeting planners will be walking the red carpet today before having their image taken by the famous camera. Check out our set up pictures of the big freeze, and make sure to follow us on twitter @youplusdallas Omni Hotel Dallas at @omnihotels #Dallas #OmniEvent and @OmniMeetings.

Game four of the NBA finals, and I’m in Victory Park, surrounded by rowdy fans in blue, while my Mavs defend their honor just inside the AAC. I’m here tonight asking this rowdy Dallas bunch about their definition of a Mavs fan. Is it someone who owns each player’s jersey? Someone who paints their face for each game? Or is a true Mavs fan someone with unspeakable love for their team?
Each person that I talk to has their own stereotype of what a true Mavs fan looks or acts like. Some said rowdy, some said proud, some said someone who cheers even if the Mavs on win or lose, and some said someone who goes all out. Nothing will give you a better definition of a Mavs fan than standing in Victory Park before the game and letting your eyes stumble upon some of the most wild and crazy outfits ever seen at a professional basketball game. The second best thing to do last night (of course, first being actually inside the AAC) was standing outside the American Airlines Center watching the array of people who came together from all over the nation with one goal in mind: help their Dallas Mavs put out the Heat for the 2011 NBA Championship.
