SXSW Music Festival: Now & Then

Posted by    |    March 13th, 2012 at 11:14 am

The aesthetics in Austin are quickly changing. Clean cut technophiles who previously roamed the Austin Convention Center whispering ideas about the iPhone 5 and swearing that Google+ actually does have a purpose are disappearing; in their place, music enthusiasts with faux-hawks and skinny jeans wander 6th street, their ears open, trying to discover a new favorite band. The SXSW Music Festival has begun.

This time last year, we really started to get to know the Dallas music scene as we interviewed local bands The O’s, The Orbans, Smile Smile and more. We carried our video equipment all over Austin, interviewing these musicians who so willingly let us stick a camera in their faces and ask them questions about their bands. I’m feeling nostalgic, so, please just watch our videos from SXSW 2011 while I go find a kleenex.

Here’s where you can catch The O’s in Austin during SXSW 2012:

The SXSW music festival kicked of Wednesday, March 16, and YouPlusDallas was hanging out at Speakeasy on Congress to see one of our favorite musical acts grace the stage. “We’re The Orbans, we are from Fort Worth, and we’d like to thank you for helping us kick off this kick ass week,” said lead singer Peter Black. SXSW Music Festival: It begins

Go on, I dare you. I dare you to dispatch the smile on my face, as if you were a fourth grade teacher in possession of a chalkboard eraser. As if you were an editor with a mean delete button. As if you were a kid sweeping cookie crumbs under the table. You can try your darndest, but it’s not going anywhere.

The SXSW music festival has started, and this is my heaven.

Soon to post: blogs, photos and video from Nelo, The Orbans, Smokin’ Joe Kubek and Bnois King

Soon to experience: The O’s and Astronautalis

Currently bragging about: running into Jay Nash, Albert Aguilar and OK Sweetheart in the back of Friends on 6th

Continually excited about: Talking with excited North Texas artists. Why? They are the opposite of jaded. They still care about their product. They have something to prove. The SXSW music gods have spoken, damnit. And they say North Texas sounds good in Austin.

The Orbans interview with You+Dallas 2.28.2011

The Orbans, North Texas inhabitants, prepare to migrate south for the Spring

‘Mellow’ is the right word to use. ‘Laidback’ is another good one, but mostly overused. The vibe at You+Dallas headquarters is put to ease when The Orbans are in studio with us, talking about their song writing process, musical influences, and future music endeavors.  As You+Dallas gears up to brave SXSW, the North Texas band tells us about past SXSW experiences, and what they are looking forward to this year. Check back next week for the interview. (more…)

The Orbans rock the Kessler Theater, will rock Dada tonight, and SXSW soon enough

Fort Worth band, The Orbans, sprung on the scene last June with the release of their first studio album, When We Were Wild. Since that time, they have been taking over the Metroplex faster than Speed Racer on a conveyor belt, playing a profusion of shows in the North Texas region.

The Kessler Theater in Oak Cliff hosted the band on a January evening before the city was blanketed (and subsequently frozen over) with snow. Opening with “Alibi” and “Don’t Lose Yourself” it quickly became apparent that everyone in the Kessler Theater’s art deco venue felt a wave of luck sweep over them knowing they took shelter in such an intimate space with a band that will be huge. Listen to The Orbans

Peter Black’s voice is just as melodious over the phone as it is on his band’s first full-length album, When We Were Wild. Check out what he had to say about his Fort Worth-based band, The Orbans.

If you could tell me one thing about the band that no one ever asks – what would you want people to know?

No one ever asks, “are you guys all friends?” or anything like that. But yeah, it’s kind of weird, we don’t really argue. If there’s an argument, it takes about fifteen seconds to go away, and I think that’s one of the things that makes it easy to get around. I think that’s one of the exciting things about this project — making future records and being together.

Naturally, your band name cannot be found in the dictionary. What does it mean?

[Laughs] It’s been really fun with that name, a lot of people come to us with different meanings, saying, “I think it means this, is it this?” and they’re actually much more interesting then the way we arrived at it. There’s an old piece of audio gear in studios called Orban compressors. After about three weeks of thinking, we kept coming back to it. The funniest [story] that someone has come to us with is back in the medieval times, it was the name given to traveling magicians. We also get,  “were you big Roy Orbison fans?” and yes, but that’s not it either. It’s fun to hear what people come up with.

You guys have such a unique sound.  Who do you look to for inspiration?

Our keyboard player, Justin, said it best when he said that it’s basically a culmination of all the music that [we] listened to growing up.  It could be a throwback to The Beatles, or something that’s Tom Petty about this or that. It’s a lot of classic elements. (more…)
