Weekend Plan of action update: Record Store Day! 4.20.13

Posted by    |    April 19th, 2013 at 4:28 pm

Record-Store-Day-2013Record stores are such amazing places that they totally deserve a whole day dedicated to them and I’m so glad such a day does actually exists. I’m talking about Record Store Day, a favorite day for music fans in which record stores across the country celebrate these havens of music and inspiration with live bands and special Record Store Day vinyl releases and re-releases. Record Store Day 2013 happens this Saturday and who better to host the celebrations than one of Dallas’ favorite record shops, Good Records. In honor of this awesome day Good Records will be opening early, like 7am early, and won’t be closing down until 12pm (whoa!).  This day will consist of tons of in-store performances, an outdoor DJ set from Track Meet and of course all the records your little heart desires (and if you think I’m kidding just check out that list of special releases and re-releases)

good-records-main-imageSaturday is going to be a perfect day for music fans, even if you’re not a vinyl junkie. Live music, beautiful weather (assuming Texas doesn’t experience any more bipolar episodes) and a store full of music waiting to be discovered, all in the name of love for the record store.

St. Patrick’s Weekend Plan of Action

dallas st. patrick's day

A sense of greatness surrounds a holiday whose sole purpose is to celebrate Irishness in general. And by Irishness, I mean wearing green and drinking. Become a temporary ginger for bonus points. While I’d be amiss not to mention the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, who’s to say that that little piece of Irish history can’t be properly celebrated with a shirt from the Chive and a pint of beer? Something tells me that’s how the Irish would want it.

So how will you properly honor the Celts this year? There’s no shortage of options.

Freakiest Golf Tournament in Dallas!

Posted by    |    April 24th, 2012 at 10:29 am

The Dallas County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen® and local 70’s cover band Le Freak are partnering for the fourth annual Caddyshack for the Cure™, a one-of-a-kind golf tournament where participants take a trip back to the 1970s complete with retro golf and disco attire.

There are tons of reasons to make it out to Bear Creek Golf Club in Dallas on Thursday, April 26 for this fabulous tournament. Shall I list a few for you?

  • You love to golf
  • You love disco classics (from bands like Le Freak!!)
  • You love to dress like the cast of Saturday Night Fever or Caddyshack—whichever direction you choose
  • You love at least one woman – mom, sister, daughter, friend

Yes, we’ll be dressed like we’re in the Decade of Disco and perhaps even some Caddyshack inspired attire. But it is 2012, and we need to educate and support women in our own neighborhoods about breast health. That is what Komen Dallas County is all about. Of the funds raised, 25 percent goes to find a cure and 75 percent stays right here in Dallas County, helping the women in our lives prevent and beat cancer. (more…)

Cee Lo Makes Everyone Feel Awkward, Chromeo Remembers DJ Mehdi, My Morning Jacket Shows the True Meaning of Rock & Roll, Stevie Wonder is the Great Harmonizer, and Day Two of ACL

Posted by    |    September 18th, 2011 at 5:00 pm

Significantly more people crammed into Zilker Park on day two of the 2011 ACL festival than day one. It had been forecasted that the weather during the 10th annual festival would be in the triple digits, but Saturday began in the same overcast haze as the day before. Again, the sky broke as festivalgoers wearing Native American headdresses, Where’s Waldo shirts, and no shirts at all ran toward Young The Giant in the warm rain.

Fresh from their show-stealing performance at this year’s VMAs, Young the Giant is the complete antithesis of what you’d except from a VMA performance; their music isn’t pop, performance art, or anything you will hear remixed at a club. It’s straight California rock.

YTG kicked off their set with the walking melody of “Apartment,” the first track on their self-tiled album, following with the Vampire Weekend-meets-Sam Cooke sound of “I Got.”

“This song’s called ‘Guns Out’,” frontman Sameer Gadhia said to the soaking audience. “I want you guys to dance along with us, that’s right.” Gadhia’s voice is infallible. He radiates energy – his body must be bruised up from hitting the tambourine so hard against himself. “We’re going to keep on goin’,” he said, introducing recent single “Cough Syrup,” asking the audience if they knew the words. “If you do, sing along.” As they wrapped their set with “My Body” everyone finally seemed to realize that yes, they have heard of these guys before.

Turning the corner of the park later in the day, the crowd at Skrillex was ridiculous, practically overlapping with the crowd gearing up for Cee Lo Green’s performance on the far end of Zilker. (more…)
