With the Untapped Festival about two months away, we knew there would be some updates for the highly anticipated union between
bands and beer. Not only have they released a list of local breweries that will be participating in the festival, they just announced their partnership with Paste Magazine. The union also produced three more Untapped festivals in Dallas (this summer), Nashville, and Atlanta.

I spent Wednesday night in a place PETA members would liken to Hades. No, not a fur coat factory. It was the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo. With box seats and a VIP parking pass, we rolled up with stellar parking and were treated like we just handed the maître’d a $20 (I would say $50, but you have to factor in the level of class at an event where bandanas are considered acceptable attire). My Dad often traveled for work when I was younger and he would always bring me a souvenir or sorts upon his return. A hand-painted fan from Japan, clay animals from Mexico — really cool unnecessary objects that were my coveted treasures. Once on a weeklong trip, I learned through daily phone conversation that he was bringing me home something “small and Black”. I could not for the young life of me figure out what could possibly be small and Black. A Scottie dog? A board game? Did it have the potential to bark, or provide me with endless hours of educational entertainment? These were questions I had neglected to ask. When he arrived home after days of me racking my brain, he handed me Clint Black’s Greatest Hits CD. Did I know who Clint Black was? No. I was much more concerned with Angelica vs. the babies on Rugrats. Despite my confusion, I headed up to my room, and placed the CD in my what-is-now-old-school sticker-covered boom box (I was so cool) and pressed play. The lyrics to Summer’s Comin’ became my theme song to life every June, and A Good Run of Bad Luck entered my head whenever something terrible happened, like stepping in gum. Clint was my hero. Peter Black’s voice is just as melodious over the phone as it is on his band’s first full-length album, When We Were Wild. Check out what he had to say about his Fort Worth-based band, The Orbans.
If you could tell me one thing about the band that no one ever asks – what would you want people to know?
No one ever asks, “are you guys all friends?” or anything like that. But yeah, it’s kind of weird, we don’t really argue. If there’s an argument, it takes about fifteen seconds to go away, and I think that’s one of the things that makes it easy to get around. I think that’s one of the exciting things about this project — making future records and being together.
Naturally, your band name cannot be found in the dictionary. What does it mean?
[Laughs] It’s been really fun with that name, a lot of people come to us with different meanings, saying, “I think it means this, is it this?” and they’re actually much more interesting then the way we arrived at it. There’s an old piece of audio gear in studios called Orban compressors. After about three weeks of thinking, we kept coming back to it. The funniest [story] that someone has come to us with is back in the medieval times, it was the name given to traveling magicians. We also get, “were you big Roy Orbison fans?” and yes, but that’s not it either. It’s fun to hear what people come up with.
You guys have such a unique sound. Who do you look to for inspiration?
Our keyboard player, Justin, said it best when he said that it’s basically a culmination of all the music that [we] listened to growing up. It could be a throwback to The Beatles, or something that’s Tom Petty about this or that. It’s a lot of classic elements. (more…)
