Freakiest Golf Tournament in Dallas!

Posted by    |    April 24th, 2012 at 10:29 am

The Dallas County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen® and local 70’s cover band Le Freak are partnering for the fourth annual Caddyshack for the Cure™, a one-of-a-kind golf tournament where participants take a trip back to the 1970s complete with retro golf and disco attire.

There are tons of reasons to make it out to Bear Creek Golf Club in Dallas on Thursday, April 26 for this fabulous tournament. Shall I list a few for you?

  • You love to golf
  • You love disco classics (from bands like Le Freak!!)
  • You love to dress like the cast of Saturday Night Fever or Caddyshack—whichever direction you choose
  • You love at least one woman – mom, sister, daughter, friend

Yes, we’ll be dressed like we’re in the Decade of Disco and perhaps even some Caddyshack inspired attire. But it is 2012, and we need to educate and support women in our own neighborhoods about breast health. That is what Komen Dallas County is all about. Of the funds raised, 25 percent goes to find a cure and 75 percent stays right here in Dallas County, helping the women in our lives prevent and beat cancer. (more…)

The Dallas Zoological Society is thrilled to announce plans for the first annual Kid To Do at the Dallas Zoo “Monkey See Monkey Do.” Following in the footsteps of its big brother Zoo To Do, Kid To Do will feature approximately 20 restaurants serving kidfriendly fare along with fun, festive activities for the whole family. The inaugural Kid To Do will be held Saturday, June 2, 2012 from 6 – 9 p.m. on Cat Green at the Dallas Zoo.

“We are excited to launch Kid To Do at the Dallas Zoo this year, which we hope will re-introduce many local families to the Zoo and engage them for years to come,” said Dallas Zoological Society president and CEO Michael Meadows. “Kid To Do is sure to be the most family-friendly social event of the season, so don’t miss this chance to monkey around with your family, friends, and Dallas’ top chefs!”

Kid To Do 2012 promises a wildly amusing evening for parents and their children with entertainment by award-winning children’s singer and performer Eddie Coker, giraffe feedings in the Giants of the Savanna exhibit, exploration of the new Koala Walkabout exhibit, animal encounters, bounce houses, a DJ and dancing, a private bird show, face painting, and more! Maria Martineau Plankinton and Emily Vafa have teamed up to chair the event, and more than 250 Dallas families have joined the host committee to help plan and produce the event. Honorary Chairs for the event are Jennifer and John Eagle, and Tracy and Kent Rathbun will serve as Honorary Restaurant Chairs.

Tickets for the event are $60 per person, children age 2 and under are free, and sponsorships begin at $500.

Alive With the Glory of Love for the third time in one year

Posted by    |    December 10th, 2010 at 4:29 pm

In high school, I openly declared the Foo Fighters to be my favorite band. Six years since, and I can’t bring myself to listen to The Colour and the Shape for more than twenty minutes without being over it. I put too much pressure on Dave to wow me on a consistent basis, which still breaks my heart a little every time I try to listen to Hey, Johnny Park!. Since my ears and Dave’s vocal chords have a love/hate/love/despair/really-like-a lot-but-still-not-completely-healed relationship, I’ve been weary of using term “favorite band” like the Cowboys have been afraid of scoring in the 2nd half.

Say Anything is the runner’s high to my musical repertoire. They are one of the few bands that my brothers and I completely agree on; siblings in our early twenties, this is the only concert that we have attended together. I love this band more than I can convey in the English language: I’ve seen them three times in the past twelve months. At three different venues. In two different states. Which probably sounds a little obsessive, but their concerts are always served with a side of youthful catharsis that most likely works better than any Olay product.  (more…)
