Movie Review: Bernie

SPOILER ALERT:  READ NO FURTHER IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW THE MOVIE PLOT.

Bernie, based on a Texas Monthly article by Skip Hollandsworth and directed by Richard Linklater, is about the 1997 murder of Marjorie Nugent, a rich and mean spirited woman from Carthage, Texas, by a mortician named Bernie Tiede.  Tiede is played by Jack Black and Mrs. Nugent is played by Shirley MacLaine. There is a lot to talk about with this movie, but we will focus this review primarily on Black’s portrayal of Tiede.

Bernie is an assistant funeral director with a way of making everybody feel special. He teaches Sunday school and sings at church services, comforts widows and people (mainly women) in times of need, directs and stars in musicals, and is completely servant hearted. The people in Carthage, Texas loved him.
