What We’re Listening To: ‘Dreams’ by Taken By Trees

Posted by    |    July 25th, 2012 at 3:18 pm

Realistically, I’m at my desk working (very hard I might add!), but mentally, I’m drifting away to a secluded island drinking a marg and finally getting tan. That’s what the first single, “Dreams”, off of Taken By Trees‘ forthcoming album, Other Worlds, has done to me. Maybe it’s because the song was recorded in Hawaii. Maybe it’s because I desperately need a tan. Or maybe it’s just what Taken By Trees’ mellow vibes do to everyone.

Taken By Trees is the name Victoria Bergsman adopted for herself after parting from The Concretes in 2006. She worked with Peter Bjorn and John‘s as guest vocalist for “Young Folks“, and wasted no time beginning to record as Taken By Trees. Her newest album, Other Worlds, is available for pre-order now and will be released October 2 on Secretly Canadian.

Some Serious Fans at Studio Movie Grill’s Midnight Showing of ‘The Dark Night Rises’

Posted by    |    July 20th, 2012 at 4:03 pm

Everyone knew the hype “The Dark Knight Rises” was going to be intense, so how does a movie theater prepare for such chaos? Studio Movie Grill began prepping for the midnight release weeks in advance and had every staff member scheduled to work that night.

“The hype was huge. As soon as we were putting show times online they were selling out,” said Zark Hopkins, general manager of Studio Movie Grill.

Bean Performs Live at House of Blues

Posted by    |    July 17th, 2012 at 1:35 pm

Big sounds and big, blonde hair surrounded Bean as she lit up the stage at Dallas’ House of Blues. The charismatic pop star bounced around the stage, completely in control. The only thing betraying the fact that this was her first real performance was her utter shock at the audience’s newfound devotion to her.

She took a moment to take everything in. Just last year she had come to the House of Blues to see one of her favorite performers, and now it was her turn. After that moment passed, she assumed her pop star persona, charming and entrancing the audience song after song.

Soulsavers Debut Video for “Take Me Back Home”

Posted by    |    July 12th, 2012 at 4:03 pm

The downtempo electronica duo, Soulsavers, have an eerily cool sound that will make you melt. The perfect soundtrack to a long road trip on a rainy day or a coffee shop study session, The Light The Dead See is uplifting despite its melancholic tone.

The duo just released the video for “Take Me Back Home” on AOL Spinner’s Video of the Day and it promises to be another beautifully haunting addition to their repertoire. Enjoy!

‘True Blood’ and ‘The Newsroom’ Renewed for Another Season

Posted by    |    July 3rd, 2012 at 3:09 pm

Once one of my favorite shows hits its 4th or 5th season, I start to get a little nervous, savoring each episode and character arc as though it may be the last. I had been growing concerned about one of the greatest guilty pleasures of all, ‘True Blood’, especially after hearing that the show’s creator, Alan Ball, would be stepping down as showrunner after the season was up.

I can finally rest easy after hearing that HBO has renewed my precious ‘True Blood’ for its 6th season as well as the new Aaron Sorkin drama, ‘The Newsroom’, starring Jeff Daniels.

Songza: The Soundtrack to Your Life

Posted by    |    July 2nd, 2012 at 11:58 am

My poor roommate, whether its 7pm or 7am, I am always blasting music. My eclectic tastes have me playing everything from an *NSYNC/Backstreet Boys marathon and Kenny Chesney to the hipster sounds of today. And, being from the South, there is never a shortage of some good old Southern rap (Country Grammar anyone?)

Although I have invested in Spotify Premium (well worth the $9.99 a month), I still found myself becoming bored with my music. Sure I could listen to any song my little heart desired, but I was always at a loss for what song to choose.

Robyn: a 90s Throwback

Robyn at American Airlines Center

I was waiting patiently in my seat at American Airlines for Coldplay to come on stage and rock my world forever, when I was struck by the voice of the very Swedish opening act, Robyn. Yes, I knew her most current hit, Dancing On My Own, but all I could think about was the song my mom and I would listen to on the radio as she chauffeured my seven-year-old self around.

Robyn, a Swedish pop star with the most wild hair cut I have ever seen, released her first album in 1996 (I was 6) and on that record was one of the most memorable and karaoke-able songs of my childhood: ‘Show Me Love’.

Backstage with Bean at House of Blues

Posted by    |    June 22nd, 2012 at 3:32 pm

“I am so excited. I don’t know why I get to play here,” said Bean in the Green Room of House of Blues. Her hair is being styled into Shirley Temple-like curls while she listens and hums along to some of her favorite songs. “My show isn’t until 8,” said Bean. “That’s why they’re curling my hair like this. It has to last.”

20-year-old Noelle Bean has undergone a lot of changes since YouPlus last saw her sixth months ago. For one thing, she’s dropped the ‘Noelle’, wishing only to be known as Bean. As with most artists who wish to be known by one name only, there needs to be a lot of personality and character behind that name to make it work. This is no problem for Bean, who has enough joy and personality to fill the entire green room. The change of name is representative of her switch from singer/songwriter to pop star.

Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team (Behind the Scenes)

Posted by    |    June 20th, 2012 at 4:34 pm

Yesterday, a one of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders woke up with blonde hair and a side part. Today, she has dark brown hair, parted down the middle. It’s all just part of the job.

We caught up with the girls at one of their training camps at Gilley’s yesterday to shoot a behind the scenes look at season 7 of CMT’s Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team. The new season debuting this September will go beyond the training camps, showing more in-depth storylines, drama, and dance.
