homegrown festMay is on its way, bringing (hopefully) sunny days and warm evenings. In Dallas, Texas, May also means it’s time for the Homegrown Music & Arts Festival! This fine Dallas concert tradition brings together Texas music, art and food trucks to celebrate our great state. This year’s lineup is pretty exciting. We’ve got the Polyphonic Spree, The Burning Hotels, The Divine Fits, A.Dd+, The O’s plus so many more. It’s going to be a really awesome day, a day so awesome that it definitely deserves a launch party.

On Friday, May 10th, Granada is giving Homegrown that well-deserved launch party. Here you can get an early start on your Homegrown Festival excitement with Sons of Fathers, whose music has been described as a “Rip-roaring brand of Texas rock, studded with gospel-influenced harmonies that would make any family proud” along with opening acts Telegraph Canyon and Goodnight Ned . Sounds like a good Texas music warm up so get your tickets on GranadaTheater.com

Chevy Music Showcases Best of Dallas Music Scene at Sundown at Granada this Summer

Posted by    |    April 3rd, 2013 at 12:39 pm

As the warmer temps begin to melt away any memories of winter, they make way for something much, much better: summer chevy music showcase - sundown - granadaconcerts. Thanks to Chevy Music Showcase, Dallas’ lone specialty beer garden and little brother to historic Granada Theater, Sundown at Granada is going to be filled with some of the best summer concerts the Dallas local music scene has to offer with a live show on the last Thursday of every month.

“We’re excited to see the North Texas Chevy Dealers embrace our local music scene and appreciate how they’re investing resources to showcase local bands and help draw more attention to the crazy amount of great talent right here in our own back yard,” said Granada Theater’s Mike Schoder.

Here are some of the first bands that have been released. We’d come up with our own descriptions, but the ones from the press release were way too on point to be messed with.

Burning Hotels – 4/25

Sex-wave, full of energy with electronic textures, danceable rhythms & catchy hooks.

GOES GOOD WITH: The Killers, Depeche Mode, Twin Shadow, New Order

We get it, The xx, you’re pretty cool. You’re so cool that you’re completely sold out for tomorrow night’s show at Granada. If I didn’t hear it from this press release, I would have gleaned it from the barrage of Facebook status’ either boasting about their ticket possession or just trying to get their hands on some.

Some Beyonce fans may be totally wiggin’ about the news of her lip-synced inauguration performance, but we kind of still think she’s totally awesome. Plus she did actually sing it; it’s not a Milli Vanilli situation. So if you kind of just don’t care that she lip-synced and are still waiting in anticipation for a Beyoncelicious performance during the Super Bowl half-time show, the Granada welcomes you with open arms.

In reference to their Mayan Apocalypse NightTONIGHT: Enjoy:

Our Last
Press Release

What:          Mayan Apocalypse Night with This Will Destroy YouDate:           Friday, December 21, 2012

Time:           7:00pm

Location:     Granada Theater, 3524 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, 75206

Since we are facing the Mayan Apocalypse today, this is the last press release you will receive from the Granada Theater.  Ever! We’re preparing for the last night on earth by spending it with This Will Destroy You. Their music is hauntingly dark and blindingly luminous, which will make for a perfect soundtrack for the end of the world. True Widow and Dallas’ own The Angelus will be helping us cross over to the other side. Get your tickets at grandatheater.com.

We’ve known this day is coming and now we can tell you that we really are a movie theater and not a live music venue, Santa Clause is not real but the Goaticorn is and on the nights we look closed, we’re actually hosting midget wrestling. Whew! Now that we’ve come clean, our staff is doing the same. No better time than the present to let go of our deepest, darkest confessions. So here goes.

Mike, Owner – “I really am Owen Wilson; I don’t really like acting…I just want to rock to live bands and do yoga.”
Gavin, Promotions - ”Last night, I ate the Goaticorn with some fava beans and a nice chianti.”
Chris, Promotions – “I fake my hearing loss to ignore people!!!”
Garrett, Promotions – “Sometimes I poop on the sidewalk and blame it on the dog.”
Ryan, Booking – “I’ve been secretly prepping for the last 5 years and have stocked my doomsday bunker with nothing but beef jerky, beer, and every season of Ancient Aliens on Blu-ray.”
Julie, Publicist - ”I’m secretly married to Andy Garcia.”

If the Mayan’s are wrong, then plan on spending New Year’s Eve with local favorites: Jonathan Tyler and the Northern LightsSomebody’s Darlingand The Quaker City Night Hawks on December 31st.  Oh, and don’t hold our confessions against us the next you see us. Buy your tickets now at granadatheater.com. Pre or post apocalypse, we will have you covered.

A.Dd+ Mixed Tape Release Party at the Granada 1.26.13

Posted by    |    December 11th, 2012 at 10:42 am

How could I forget A.Dd+. That was quite possibly the most difficult name I have ever had to spell in a story. And because I covered the Dallas Observer Music Awards and these guys are so awesome, I had to write that name more times than I would have liked. I’m just going to have to deal with it though, because as I said before, these guys really are awesome. Listen to “Can’t Come Down.” Recognize the song they’ve mixed in there? It’s Britney Spear’s “Toxic.”  I love them.

The first single Suitcases is a taste of what to expect on the release. Opening for the likes of Erykah Badu and Wu-Tang Clan, the duo is backed by the Dallas Observer’s 2011 & 2012 Best DJ; DJ Sober. Meeting in a North Dallas apartment complex where they both lived in 2000, then finally making it official in 2007 and A.Dd+ was born.

A.Dd+ has been received much well-deserved attention from national media and have been compared to Outkast and UGK. In 2011, Pitchfork.com named their first release, “When Pigs Fly” as their favorite underrated rap releases of the year. Spin named them one of the 5 Best New Artists for May 12 and their set was included in Fun Fun Fun Fest 2012′s Best 20 Sets.

Get Your Legwarmers and Jellies Ready: Granada Presents Totally 80s with Le Cure

Posted by    |    November 29th, 2012 at 2:14 pm

What:          Totally 80′s with Le Cure

When:         December 27, 2012

Where:       Granada Theater, 3524 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, 75206

I could try to come up with some witty opening paragraph filled with beloved 80s references and like, totally rad 80s slang, but as I am a child of the 90s (barely missing the decade by 7 days) I would have no clue what I was talking about. So I’ll let this press release, written by someone presumably 7 days older than me, speak for itself.
