What comes to mind when you think of the Nutcracker? The most likely image you’ll have in your mind is that of ballerinas leaping and twirling in tutus and tights to Tchaikovsky’s famous musical arrangements. Even though the Nutcracker was originally a ballet and is always performed as such, sometimes it’s fun to tweak with tradition and see what happens.
That’s where Kathy Burks Theater of Puppetry Arts comes in. They are back again this year at the Dallas Children’s Theater with their puppet rendition of the Nutcracker in which they utilize both shadow puppets as well as black theater rod puppetry. Puppetry is an amazing theatrical art and if you have never seen a live puppet performance then this show is a wonderful way to experience this art form for the first time.
While the puppets do not twirl and plié, the masterful skill of the puppeteers will make them come alive with heart touching emotion and whimsical energy. Getting to watch this classic story unfold in such an unconventional way will be a delight for any audience member, young or old.
