Today we say farewell to one of Dallas’ favorite icons, Big Tex. The 60-year-old Texan went up in flames Friday morning at Fair Park due to what the fair’s vice president of marketing believes to be the result of an electrical short.
Tex’s hands are the only casualties of the fire that engulfed the 70-foot figure within 5 minutes. Big Tex has been the star of the State Fair of Texas since his first appearance in 1952.
The fairgrounds remain open but it will be a strange and solemn day indeed without a warm greeting from the tallest man in Dallas.
