The producer of Wedding Crashers (2005) brings you Hit and Run, a light, simple, enjoyable summer comedy starring Dax Shepard, Kristen Bell, Tom Arnold, Bradley Cooper, Kristin Chenoweth, and Michael Rosenbaum. Hit and Run is rated R for pervasive language including sexual references, graphic nudity, some violence and drug content. This unique film is written and directed by Dax Shepard and is an exceptional mix of action and humor.
Charlie Bronson (Shepard) lives in a small town under witness protection following his testimony in court against his former friends when a bank robbery goes wrong. When Charlie’s girlfriend, Annie (Bell), is offered a job in Los Angeles, Charlie risks his safety to follow her, leaving the witness protection program. When Annie’s ex-boyfriend, Gil (Rosenbaum), becomes suspicious of Charlie, he searches online for information on Charlie’s past and contacts Charlie’s former friend, Alex Dimitri (Cooper), who has recently been released from jail and is looking for retribution. As the former getaway driver for the bank robbery, Charlie finds himself in pursuit by the feds, who are closing in, along with Alex and his former accomplices. A chase ensues leaving Charlie with no choice but to tell Annie the truth about his past and do his best to make things right. With considerably well-distributed humor, Hit and Run is a full throttle, action-packed comedy.
As two of the main characters (Shepard and Bell) of Hit and Run are romantically involved in real life, their on screen chemistry is playful and undeniable. Hit and Run takes a very simple story and creates an in-your-face wild ride filled with humor. This summer comedy has been very under marketed and most audiences will most likely pass up a chance to see Hit and Runor go into the movie with low expectations. However, audiences will be undoubtedly surprised at how much they will enjoy this film. Tom Arnold plays a hilarious federal marshal watching over Charlie Bronson, and Bradley Cooper plays a sarcastic, nonchalant, hippie-looking ex-bank robber.
Hit and Run is a great mix of genres, creating a passionate, fun, easily digested comedy filled with car chases. This film may not be a hit at the box office, and audiences will not lose sleep over missing this film; but I highly encourage all readers to check out Hit and Run at some point. I recommend this film to anyone who enjoys simple movies with a lot of action and laughs. I rate this film a 3.3 out of 5 stars for its uniqueness, comedy, and fresh ideas.
Hit and Run releases in theaters on Wednesday, August 22nd, 2012.
