“The Watch” Movie Review: Keep An Eye Out For The Neighborhood Watch

Forget the plot and the messiness of the storyline and enjoy The Watch!  This is one hilariously entertaining movie.  This film has an original story with an extremely amusing ensemble cast.  The Watch features actors Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, and newcomer, Richard Ayoade, in a film that was renamed in light of the tragic shooting in February this year involving a neighborhood security guard.  The Watch is a true comedy/sci-fi hybrid film.

The Watch takes place in Glenview, Ohio and revolves around the formation of a neighborhood watch group to keep an eye on the town after a local Cosco security guard is murdered.  Evan Trautwig (Stiller), the manager of Cosco, makes an announcement at a high school football game, offering anyone a chance to join his watch.  Much of the town considers this a joke, but two middle-aged men (Vaughn and Ayoade), and a high school dropout (Hill), join up with Trautwig in the hopes of keeping the town safe and having a good time.  As further mysteries plague this Ohio town, the neighborhood watch gets closer to catching their murderer and believes they have found traces of alien life.  The Watch is filled with vulgar but entertaining humor, which keeps you laughing the entire time.

The Watch is a feel-good refreshing film from Ben Stiller and this cast.  There are several slow paced and ridiculous scenes, but the story is one of a kind and is highly amusing.  The wit and uniqueness of each of the four main characters interconnects as they feed off of each other’s humor.  The characters’ chemistry gives off a feeling of familiarity and comfort.  The charisma of these characters makes you overlook the plot holes, lack of logic, and odd decisions made throughout the film.  I truly enjoyed this movie because it kept me smiling and laughing throughout.  This is not a must see movie, but it is a very entertaining summer comedy.  The Watch embodies the absurd actions and experiences we all dream about.

I would give The Watch a 2.7 out of 5 stars and recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys comedies or is looking for an exciting summertime flick.  The movie is 94 minutes long and was given an R rating for strong sexual content including references, pervasive language and violent images.

Great solid review. I agree that it is not a must see movie but a great one for a good laugh during the hot summer days. Thanks for the heads up on the language content. I will stay away but I’m sure my sons will enjoy it!

  2. William Peters says:

Not only did you hit the target but so did The Watch. I too found this movie hilarious LOL…..I laughed by butt off. These guys were idiots like the 3 Stooges. But it worked for me!!! Movie of the summer.

  3. Ann Parker says:

I saw the movie last night. Read your review before going. Funny but very crude!
Thanks for the warning. I might have taken my 17 year old. My husband definitely enjoyed it more but sexual stuff & language does not bother him. Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn, as always, totally entertained me!

  4. Jim Melton says:

Okay this movie did not work for me.It was all over the place. I took my 16 year old son and his best friend. Wished I had read the review first. I know Stiller can do some rude humor but this was too raunchy. Maybe would have enjoyed it more if I had not taken them. This was a sci fi flick with 4 schnooks! I was greatly disappointed.

  5. Sally Moss says:

Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! This is one craxy sex sci-fi comedy. The jokes aren’t even funny. It mocks people from the midwest. I would not see this movie. I rate it a 1.0 and that’s only for the star cast of actors in this movie. I expected much more. GUess I don’t have a “raunchy” sense of humor.

  6. Hayden Pittman says:

This movie did have a great amount of raunchy and inappropriate humor. To me the most entertaining thing about the film was the actors who were in it. These familiar faces were so easy to laugh at, that most of the rude humor flew right over my head. Definitely not a film for kids, and probably best for males who can stand the strong sexual humor. Movies like this seem to be individual or group projects for entertainment and not as much large blockbusters intended to make a lot of money. This is a film a lot of people won’t see in theaters but will watch on TV/DVD and laugh about later. Thanks for reading!
