‘Lindsanity’ on SNL this Saturday

Posted by    |    February 29th, 2012 at 4:16 pm

Lindsay Lohan will be hosting this week’s SNL with musical guest Jack White. It will be the fourth time the in-and-out of prison starlet has hosted the show. In the Facebook promos, as seen above, Lohan and SNL vet Kenan Thompson jokingly discuss her tabloid “absence” and Thompson coins the term “Lindsanity”, which will most likely become a trending topic next to the actual ‘Linsanity‘ and Snooki’s shockingly random pregnancy. SNL’s sketch comedy has been lukewarm in recent seasons; their promos even as tepid as a Carrot Top Comedy Central special. As much respect as I have everyone has clearly lost for Lohan over the decade the years, the promos are actually quite funny.

But can we please talk about how botoxed-out she looks? No one’s skin is that smooth, unless they’re six months old.

Oscar Predictions – Did We Get It Right?

Last week, YouPlusDallas paired up with the talented Mr. James Faust, Artistic Director for the Dallas International Film Festival and the Dallas Film Society, to talk Oscar picks. The 84th Annual Academy Awards aired Sunday night, so we’re backtracking to see just how well Mr. Faust picked the winners.

Sacha Baron Cohen’s Dirty Publicity Stunt

Posted by    |    February 27th, 2012 at 8:20 pm

Let’s talk about Sacha Baron Cohen’s inane publicity stunt on the red carpet at this year’s Academy Awards.  He made the interwebs buzz long before the nominees even set foot in the Kodak Theatre – by dumping what appears to be some sort of flour mixture on Ryan Seacrest.

Dressed in full costume to promote his upcoming ‘comedy’ The Dictator, Baron Cohen carried an urn, saying it was the remains of his “dear friend and doubles tennis partner,” Kim Jong Il.

The red carpet is a prime place to pull the ultimate prank, especially when viewers are sitting at home with their smart phones, tablets and laptops ready to tweet, retweet, post and repost the first flawed moment they see.

Baron Cohen completely took advantage of this; but was it necessary? Perhaps for D-list actors; however, did any of you see Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street? Baron Cohen may traditionally rely on the whacked-out shenanigans of Brüno and Da Ali G Show, but he is a true talent, and doesn’t need to send anyone’s twitter feed in to a frenzy by ruining Seacrest’s shoes.

If anything, the above video solidifies what a classy guy Seacrest truly is.

The Magic of the Academy Awards and Photoshop: Angelina Jolie & the Trending Leg

Posted by    |    February 27th, 2012 at 6:48 pm

Angelina Jolie is (to some people) super talented and stunningly beautiful. She also has, despite popping out three kids, a svelte physique that looks good in virtually any red carpet gown, especially the black Versace she donned yesterday at the 84th annual Academy Awards.

Jolie presented a couple of awards at the Kodak Theatre, arriving at the microphone and striking a pose, her right leg making its Oscar debut to millions of viewers before the Academy Award winner even cleared her throat to speak.

This was a pretty bizarre move. Yes, your dress has a slit. Sure, you have gorgeous gams. Why you gotta rub it in our faces, Ange?

The above photo, a true work of art, is how Oscar viewers collectively felt upon seeing Angie’s leg rear its kneecap from its usual hiding place.

Jolie’s right leg is currently trending, and has earned its own twitter handle with over 21,000 followers. Really, America? Really?

What Winning an Oscar Should Look Like

Posted by    |    February 27th, 2012 at 3:31 pm

At the 84th annual Academy Awards, Octavia Spencer won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Help. Last night, plenty of Oscar winners accepted their awards nonchalantly; but let’s be real, if you’re winning an Oscar, you should be on the verge of tears and/or passing out. Unless you’re Meryl Streep. The quality of the above video is less than awesome; regardless, Spencer’s enthusiasm and shock shine through, the way one should appear when accepting such an incredible award.

Concerts that are More Fun than Worrying About the Weather

Posted by    |    February 23rd, 2012 at 5:08 pm

We’ve been overly spoiled the past couple of days in Dallas, our smart phone weather apps resting at a steady 75 degrees. This time last year, we were wearing thick pea coats and warm scarves; so, naturally, worry takes over that these dreamy temperatures won’t last, and we will be subjected to freezing cold temps come morning. Well, quit worrying and go see a concert. Need ideas? Of course you do.

Tonight, Thursday February 23: VNV Nation is at Trees. The Irish/English rock duo, composed of Ronan Harris and Mark Jackson, released their eighth studio album last fall. Tickets are $22 at the door.

Saturday, February 25: The Ton Tons are playing Doublewide Bar. They have a sexy, smoldering rock vibe; like if Macy Gray actually knew what she was doing. Tickets are $5 at the door.

Have fun out there, Big D.

Robert Wilonsky, Editor of Unfair Park and YouPlusDallas Hero, to Leave Dallas Observer

Posted by    |    February 23rd, 2012 at 4:25 pm

We freakin’ love Dallas Observer, no matter how snarky they may be. In fact, their snark is probably our favorite thing about them. Well, our second favorite thing that will soon forcedly become our favorite thing because our number one favorite thing has decided, that after a glorious twenty years of snark, he will be leaving Dallas’ Village Voice publication for something a little more refined. Robert Wilonsky, Editor of Unfair Park, is saying adios to his comfortable, broken-in home at the Observer for a classy gig at Dallas Morning News. His last day will be Friday, March 2.

While we understand that this is a very exciting career move, the YouPlusDallas team is wicked sad to see him go. After all, he was the first to note when our website appeared in the interwebs in June 2010, referring to us as the “YouTube of Dallas”. He’s helped our fledgling little start up company gain a significant (read: massive) amount of page views for our super cool (if we do say so ourselves, and we do) videos. He even spells “YouPlusDallas” correctly. Wilonsky has embedded many a YPD video on his blog, including our recent Valentine’s Day short film, which he so kindly described as having a Woody Allen likeness, and our Downtown Dallas Tunnels video, which he lovingly dubbed as a “Horror Story”. So, maybe he’s hot and cold with our topics of choice, but that seems to be the very essence of snark. Let’s take a look back at some of the love we’ve received from a truly talented, informative and persuasive man over the years.

ArtBabble was named as one of Art Business News magazine’s “10 Must-Follow Tweeters” this month! We were highlighted on page 30 for our “easy access to an extensive array of video content, including artists interviews, gallery tours…” and our series “The Tool at Hand.” from our partner Chipstone. This is encouraging news, as we’ve been trying to ramp up our Twitter presence lately to feature particular artists, our partners, and their series’.
