It’s been a remarkable year of local music for us here at YouPlusDallas; we’ve had the pleasure of hanging out with a variety of talented Dallas/Fort Worth songsters. Here are our Top 5 Local Songs of 2011.
5. Seryn (This Is Where We Are) – “We Will All Be Changed”
Seryn’s vocal harmonies never cease to will listeners into a comatose serenity. A favorite of Paste Magazine and fronted by Dallas Observer Music Awards Best Male Vocalist winner Trenton Wheeler, Seryn’s “We Will All Be Changed” should make you cry tears of emotional ecstasy, and we promise to not judge you.
4. Calhoun (Heavy Sugar) – “Knife Fight”
Calhoun had an exciting end to 2011, when album Heavy Sugar was in the final running to be nominated for a Grammy for “Best Rock Album”. While radio-favorites Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Kings of Leon, among others, ended up getting the nod, we still think this song deserves its share of the limelight.
3. The O’s (Between the Two) – “In Numbers We Survive”
Like Calhoun, the O’s were in the final running to be nominated for a Grammy for “Best Folk Album”. More than that, the music video for “In Numbers We Survive” is pretty damn brilliant, and superbly shot (says the video production company).
2. Astronautalis (This Is Our Science) – “Contrails”
We know, we know, Andy Bothwell, AKA Astronautalis, is a resident of freezing cold Minnesota; but we’re giving him a free pass on this one. The honorary Dallasite has performed at both DFW Homegrown fests, so that counts. Song “Contrails” featuring Tegan from Tegan & Sara is an MTV-Iggy favorite.
1. Burning Hotels (Burning Hotels) – “Beard”
Since their recent CD-release at Club Dada, Fort Worth outfit Burning Hotels has struck a match upon the Dallas music scene, and we can’t seem to put out the flame. It might as well be an Olympic torch.
